To not want any carpets at all in my house

I have four dcs, two labs, four cats and a rabbit.

The carpet on the stairs and even in the bedroom is trashed.

I would like wood/wood substitute throughout instead. With lovely rugs that I could get cleaned properly or throw out without too much financial heartbreak.

H says a house without carpets would be utterly soulless and echo-y. I think it would be cleeeeeeeeaaaaaaan!

It's an old farmhouse with a new extension on it so it's got tonnes of character already.

I have no carpet in my house at all. Just a few Turkish rugs. I love it and will never have carpet again.

I'm with you. As nice as carpet is on your feet in winter it's impossible to keep clean. I wanted wooden floors in the whole house but DH said no we 50% carpet. It's a bloody pain! Nothing gives me more satisfaction that wiping up a spiller drink off the floor in two seconds!

I had a house with no carpets and it was bliss! So easy to clean. Current house has carpets throughout except bathroom/kitchen and it's a PITA! (I have cats and a golden retriever!) I have now restricted the dog to the kitchen to contain his hair.

Compromise?
Carpet in the bedroom, and keep the animals downstairs?

We have got rid of nearly all the carpet in our house. The layout means that there is a lot of foot traffic between outside through the conservaory, living room, kitchen and hall. The one room that is properly seperate is the dining room and thats better off with hard flooring anyway. We also only have an upstairs toilet so people are always getting in the house and running upstairs.

In our house life is easier without carpet, except the noise that nerf guns make!

I have no carpets, and when I see the colour of the water after mopping, I am glad!

Have never for a moment regretted. We didn't have curtains for a while either as we have Georgian wooden shutters but I've relented.

I'd compromise and have carpets just upstairs. It depends on how warm or cold the house is generally - I think hard floors in a house that's already cold is very unwelcoming and uncosy. But you can fix that with rugs in any case. I think bedrooms are nicer and cosier with carpet.

I have wood and stone floors throughout the downstairs of my house and it is lovely and not echoey at all. I too have a lab who produces a puppy sized amount of fur on the floor daily! A carpet would be a nightmare. I do have carpet upstairs but DDog does go up.

We had to take our carpets up when ds was a baby as he had really severe GERD.

I have kept hard floors since.
Big soft rugs which you can clean / replace more easily.

Far more hygienic.
SIL is allergic to dogs.
Before her visit, with carpets down, I had them professionally cleaned.
She sneezed and sneezed.
Then I put hard floors down.
Mopped before she arrived.
No sneezing.

(mind, I don't like her and have a dog again not so perhaps I should get some carpet fitted, as a good excuse not to have her at my house?)

As long as it's a house you're in and not an upstairs flat, it sounds good.

I do wonder if sometimes people underestimate the level of noise transfer they'll receive downstairs from kids/dogs etc in upstairs rooms though.

Sounds fine to me. Rugs would stop it being too echoey.

Definitely look into non-slip options for the stairs though.

YADNBU!!! We only have carpets upstairs and on the stairs, I wet-vacced the week-old landing carpet yesterday and the water was grim! We have 2 DDs and a cat and it's so much easier to clean up spills downstairs.

Another to say YANBU. We have carpet in the sitting room, stairs and all of upstairs (apart from bathrooms). The first bit of the sitting room carpet leads through from kitchen/dining room and you can see the difference in it, it's like a front door mat. It does my head in but DH loves carpets.

On the plus side it is cosy and nicer for the dogs to lie on so it does have plus points.

DH's 'solution' to the door problem is to not let the dogs in the sitting room

I don't have any carpets at all, just a combination of wood and tiled flooring. It's great, much easier to keep clean. I've put a few rugs down to soften the look a bit.

With three DC, an assortment of dogs and cats and a DH who's inclined to allergies, having no carpets works well for us.

We don't find it too noisy as the house is well insulated.

We have carpets on the stairs and in one of the 3 bedrooms. It's very noisy!

I personally have to have carpets or loads of rugs in the bedroom. There's nothing worse than getting up on a cold winter morning and having to put your feet on a cold floor! I'm not fussed about them being in the living room, though, especially with that many pets. If your H insists on carpets, tell him only if he's prepared to put in the hard work of making sure they're kept clean. It might change his mind ;)

YADNBU! I hate carpet, and got rid of it in our last house, except for stairs. Then we moved to a new house... fully carpeted! And got a dog. Awful.
I shampooed the carpets (they were newish) when I moved in. Pure unadulterated filth. Did it several times. Then again a month later, and regularly since. Always filthy. How can that be healthy?
Am just about to replace upstairs with bamboo now; downstairs done already. Looks great and much cleaner.

What is the alternative to carpets on stairs? I hate hoovering stairs. (80s house so unlikely to be lovely wood under the carpet.)

Well maybe on the stairs have some hard wearing kind of grassy kite or something?

I live in a house that had lovely polished floorboards throughout. It's Aussie, and single storey - mostly original floorboards (although not all).

Started off thinking we wouldn't have carpets but a couple of years in, we got carpets in the bedrooms - just too cold and DAMP to not do it, mildew creeping up the wardrobe sort of scenario. So now we have carpeted bedrooms, and a large rug in the living room. SO MUCH BETTER!

But we don't have indoor pets (apart from the 3yo, I suppose! ) so that might make a difference.

But I miss carpets. It's my favourite thing about hotels - carpet between my toes. Rugs don't cut it.

I hate carpets. We have children, a dog, thousands of cats and loads of the DCs friends popping in and out through the week. Carpets were the bane of my life til three summers ago when I got solid wooden floors throughout (and lovely porcelain tiles in the kitchen and bathrooms).

I cannot imagine ever wanting carpets again, they're awful for children with asthma, harbour all sorts of mangy dirt and grime. They should be outlawed.

I hate carpets! They always look so dirty so quickly.
We have wooden floors and a few rugs, and tiles in kitchen/bathroom. The tiles sometimes feel cold in winter but not the wooden floorboards.
