To not want any carpets at all in my house

I have four dcs, two labs, four cats and a rabbit.

The carpet on the stairs and even in the bedroom is trashed.

I would like wood/wood substitute throughout instead. With lovely rugs that I could get cleaned properly or throw out without too much financial heartbreak.

H says a house without carpets would be utterly soulless and echo-y. I think it would be cleeeeeeeeaaaaaaan!

It's an old farmhouse with a new extension on it so it's got tonnes of character already.

Laminate is the pits. I'd rather have medieval style rushes on the floor.

PikachuBoo · 14/09/2016 13:01

Don't put in laminate!

Carpet hater here, we've only got it on the stairs and landing and a music room downstairs (blocks out heavy thrash...!). It was in the main living room but we got the keys on the Friday and Saturday had two guys laying walnut floor and its lush, perfect temperature, never too cold, love it! The stair and landing are beige but cats and teenagers have wrecked it in months so that's coming out soon. The upstairs bedrooms are all laminated before we bought but I can live with that Confused

We only have carpet on our stairs, landing and in my bedroom and that's recent. Tiles and laminate everywhere else. Much easier to keep clean and longer lasting too

I don't have carpets. Hate them. We have original parquet floors and a few very expensive white wool rugs that get sent to the cleaners once a year.

I would never live in a house with carpets again I think, once you have lived long enough without the idea starts to become really weird. Whoever thought it was a good idea to cover floors with non washable textiles.

I mop twice a week (10 minutes whole house) and the water is always dirty, carpets are just grim.

My DH is German, he thinks carpets are disgusting.
We don't have any and when I see the dirt that comes off my floors on a daily basis I agree as it would all be sitting in the carpet!
No matter how often you Hoover they are never going to be as clean as hard floors that you canproperly disinfect and even bleach in some cases

I am a carpet lover.Have lived the last 16 years with tiles, flagstoneses and rugs.T he dust was phenomenal. Now I have wood on the kitchen, hall, dining room and bathrooms.Hoovering the carpet is easy and because the dust is trapped there I am not dusting daily. Also bliss to be able to go barefooted without my feet freezing or being permanently shod.Hard floors were OK from a small child point of view although falls were a bit tougher but my dd is 13 now so mud, paint and craft stuff is contained.Love my carpets!

Must have a good beating vacuum cleaner though.
