to think this Facebook comment is just fucking rude? Or is it seriously an attempt at a compliment?

I feel like it was supposed to be a compliment, but wasn't thought about properly.

Don't worry, my post wasn't me fishing for compliments, I literally just shared a memory and the caption was me moaning about my looks when I was unwell (I was a teen btw!) and went on to say how I wished I looked like that now. Anyway, makes no sense without seeing it.

She comments this...

Oh, I crossed out any names, pictures, etc.

Yeah, it's either very openly backhanded or you have a friend like one I've got who manages to muddle common phrases just enough in her head that it completely changes the essence to those of us reading Smile

You clearly were fishing - why would you post a shit pic of yourself otherwise. You were hoping for 'you're gorgeous hun' comments to bolster your self esteem. Lesson learnt. Work on your self esteem and don't wallow in the past

At the time I probably was, with the original post, yes. I was 17. I don't think you read the OP properly.

She isn't one of my closest friends, but I work with her and would class her as a friend.

I reckon she meant to say "You're not just pretty; you're gorgeous inside and out" but got herself muddled.

I read that and though it was a harsh comment, or an attempt at humour.

But, now I've looked at it again I think its a combination of an attempt at a compliment and a typo. I think she means 'No, you are not pretty! You are gorgeous (emphasis on the gorgeous, meaning you are more than pretty) However, she crucially left off the 'and outside' bit...

Did anyone else check for typos more than usual given the subject topic? Grin

I think it's clear she was telling you-"not pretty, but gorgeous". That's what the style of writing, the exclamation marks, and the general illiteracy says to me. I really don't think she means to be insulting, but i also this this whole exchange is silly.
