I'm 43 and figure I am probably too old for any more children but deep down in my heart I'd love another...aibu to ask how old you think is too old?

OP posts:
SnotGoblin · 18/09/2016 20:39

I'm 43 and in the process of trying to have my third. Hadn't thought of myself as too old at all until now Grin.

frizzfactor · 18/09/2016 20:40

Had my first at 29, and in April had my second at 37. It's a lot lot harder this time round, thank goodness she sleeps through the night and has done since she was 8 weeks. I struggle with all the demands being made on me, but I'm glad I have her of course. I'm also a single parent, which can make somethings tougher, but at least I don't have to share the remote or shave my legs if I don't want to Wink!

hobbisl38 · 18/09/2016 20:41

I had my son at 45 and my daughter at 43. We're all healthy and happy. I do worry about living to a ripe old age and not conking out too early, but otherwise we've no problems. Didn't meet my husband till I was 41 so babies earlier wasn't really an option. There are no 'rules'.

My sister in law gave birth on her 43rd birthday to a healthy boy

Littlecaf · 18/09/2016 20:43

40 here. Although ideally 38 really. Had DS at 34. Now 36. (Just). Need to convince DP to have another......

PopFizz · 18/09/2016 20:46

Had both of mine at 25. I didn't want children in my thirties personally. Now I'm mid thirties and they're both towards the end of Primary and I'm glad I'm done with the baby stuff.

How old is too old generally? Depends on people's personal lives. I think if you can have them naturally at that age then surely that's ok? Men however, I admit I go a bit mmmmmmm when I read of 60somethings having babies. But that's because my grandparents were younger than that when I was born I guess?

SarcasmMode · 18/09/2016 20:47

For me personally? 35, I'd say but am only 26 now so maybe in 10 years I'll disagree.

For others? Any age really but I may wonder how safe it is/how it might impact mother and child over 45.

Ratley · 18/09/2016 20:49

My cut off was 30. I wanted 3 children I had my first at 23, 2nd at 26 tried and tried for a third but got to 29 not pregnant so had to give up.
Pregnancy was hard enough in my twenties, I don't think I could have coped with it older.

Cheby · 18/09/2016 20:50

Had DD just after I turned 32, now 11 weeks pregnant with DC2 aged 35. Will be 36 when I have the baby. I am definitely done after this.

We will have a 4 year gap because of house moves and job changes, I wanted 2 years max. I'm happy with the gap but wouldn't have wanted to wait any longer. It took 4 months to conceive (which I know is nothing to worry about) but I was so worried about my age and the potential gap getting bigger.

If, God forbid, something went wrong with this pregnancy, I don't know whether I would want to TTC again.

I have amazing friends in their late thirties who have yet to meet the right person and haven't had kids. I would support them all the way if they decided to have a baby in their forties.

kilmuir · 18/09/2016 20:51

45

MrsSc00bs · 18/09/2016 20:51

40 was always my cut off point, had my first at 35. But no.2 just isn't happening for us and I am now 42, if it doeskin happen before I'm 43 I will have to give up :(

Tartypants21 · 18/09/2016 20:52

Im 43 (nearly 44) and currently 18 weeks pregnant with my 7th child.. my eldest being 23. I never intended to have any more after I hit 35 but dont regret a thing

ShastaBeast · 18/09/2016 20:53

29 was my second and last but not intentionally, I would've started later and preferably had two between 30 and 35. I've ended up crippled by the two pregnancies so definitely don't want more, particularly older than 40 as our bodies start getting weaker as we age so I could end up even worse off. I agree with other posters that more than anything I want my life back, having another baby would be a disaster. I'll have two kids in secondary school at 40, the idea of having a newborn is horrifying. I really hope I don't get broody as I want to catch up on all the holidays and fun outings we missed out on from my mid 20s onwards.

headinhands · 18/09/2016 20:56

Had my youngest at 35 and the pregnancy was by far the most exhausting. Have felt 'too old' to have another since.

BoffinMum · 18/09/2016 20:56

I had my last one at 41 - dead easy apart from the fact I got SPD but that was probably the quantity of offspring rather than my age. Took about 5 minutes to conceive and last child the healthiest.

TTC1985 · 18/09/2016 20:56

I recently turned 31 and PG with my first, I hope to have another and will try again in about 3-4 years. I don't think I'd try any later than 36, not sure why tbh! I just feel I'd struggle.

BoffinMum · 18/09/2016 20:58

The way I see it is if you are fertile, you're not too old as far as your body is concerned.

NFPPWCalhan · 18/09/2016 21:00

Wanted children before 30. Life didn't go as planned and ended up with #1 at 32. Then tried for #2 from 34, but again fate didn't give a shit about our plans but did bless us with #2 at 37. Now 41. Done, dusted, no more thank you.

NFPPWCalhan · 18/09/2016 21:01

Have you had your bloods checked? Iron, Thyroid, Vit D?

crje · 18/09/2016 21:04

For me 35

Im 41 and feel knackered at the thoughts of a baby.

herecomesthsun · 18/09/2016 21:04

I had my last at 47. I would love to have been able to have had my kids earlier, but, as it worked out, I wouldn't be without DD, my youngest (who is amazingly healthy, apparently way ahead at school and rather cute if I say so myself).

In fact, I don't really think I have a cut off age.

user1471182622 · 18/09/2016 21:07

Adopted Daughter last year when I was 43. Love her more than words could say! Open to do it again if sibling was to come along! Not saying its not really had work though!

Idontneedanotherhero · 18/09/2016 21:09

I had first at 37 and have just had second at 40. Luckily one of each! That's me, I'm done!

PussCatTheGoldfish · 18/09/2016 21:10

30 was my cut off. I had ours at 26 and 27.

Two reasons, Dh is 18 years older (DH's cut off for a last child was 50), and my family have a history of early menopause.
