So this term is bandied about a fair bit.

But what defines "hipster" ?

angelikacpickles · 11/09/2016 22:35

Male hipsters are very easy to spot and describe - the women are a bit trickier.

seasidesally · 11/09/2016 22:37

i only think of males as hipsters not women,no idea why

olderthanyouthink · 11/09/2016 22:37

You know whats really weird? When you see an older man doing it too but no one's sure if he's following the trend of just like that and therefore a trend setter so everyone stares trying to sus him out.

Dinosaursdontgrowontrees · 11/09/2016 22:38

Was going to post the dickhead song.. cosmic beat me to it. Sums it up well I feel!

DavidWainwrightsFeet · 11/09/2016 22:38

I went to Old Street for a conference. I was all geared up for hipster spotting and within thirty seconds of leaving the tube one person had tried to sell me street food from a country which I'd never imagined had a cusine at all (possibly Ecuador?), and someone else had attempted to get me to control a BB8 droid using an experimental Twitter interface. One of them may have been wearing pool sliders.

olderthanyouthink · 11/09/2016 22:39

seasidesally because they are simpler, minimalist, easier to look after and most importantly against the grain.

SaggyNaggy · 11/09/2016 22:40

It's someone e younger than you who thinks they no more than you do about things invented before they were born.

So 20year olds thinking they know more about vinyls, 80s tv, internet, Bowie etc.
They also seem to think wearing glasses with plain glass in is cool and trendy. Weirdos. Grin

KittensWithWeapons · 11/09/2016 22:41

The men generally have full beards, heads shaved on the sides with hair long on top. Often in a man-bun. They like to drink out of mason jars, preferably through a stripey paper straw Grin.

seasidesally · 11/09/2016 22:41

ah thanks,how daft Grin

i could never be a hipster,to much effort required

helenatroy · 11/09/2016 22:47

I'd be s shite hipster, I like Marks and Spencer's, the archers, my hair is all one colour and my bike has a basket on the front.

onemorecupofcoffeefortheroad · 11/09/2016 22:47

My son identifies as a hipster, he is tall and skinny, has a beard, drinks coffee from Indie coffee shops, carries a backpack, wears skinny black jeans that hang off his snake like hips, he travels everywhere by bus and penny board (small skate board). He doesn't drink alcohol or smoke or take drugs and is the sweetest, kindest boy, caring, thoughtful and hard working. He gives hipsters a good name.

Dailymailisacrapnewspaper · 11/09/2016 22:48

my bike has a basket on the front.

that certainly doesn't rule you out infact it puts you well on the way

helenatroy · 11/09/2016 22:50

Daily. Am wounded.

RJnomore1 · 11/09/2016 22:51

I did that buzz feed quiz and it says I'm a hipster Blush

I'm a Middle Aged slightly overweight mother of two with a job in middle management who lives in semi rural Scotland.

I like mason jars abd obscure bands though.

PikachuBoo · 11/09/2016 22:54

They are just nobs, basically.

Behave in all sorts of arrogant ways but because they have ludicrous hair. In their view it's not arrogance, they are being cool, and other people are being straight. It's like the 60s never happened. They seem to think they are the first people that ever cared, and that their silly hair/facial hair make them superior. I have to say I diagnose a strong undertow of sexism. I'm fifty and have been mansplained more by hipsters in last five years than anyone else in previous quarter century.

HarryDresdensLeatherDuster · 11/09/2016 22:57

Well according to that quiz I have fully embraced the hipster lifestyle...Grin Hmm Shock Confused

Too old and so excruciatingly uncool it's scary!

MooPointCowsOpinion · 11/09/2016 22:57

Fecking top knots on men, and calling it a man bun. It's an arsehole detector, mate.

Not eating off a plate. Slate, tiny trolley, huge fucking shovel. No plate.

Drinking out of jam jars, in 2015 and now saying that's so last year.

Thinking anyone cares about your gap year.

Cultural appropriation.

birdladyfromhomealone · 12/09/2016 00:41

They remind me of The Amish men in The Village

1sttimedaddy83 · 12/09/2016 02:54

Hipsters = twats

Togaparties · 12/09/2016 03:07

Never encountered one that wasn't a complete prick
