Spelling mistakes on social media

allyre · 08/09/2016 18:07

Am I wrong to be completely outraged by the spelling mistakes on social media? Why are there so many people who can't tell the difference between "two", "too" or "to" or "there" and "their". Another cause of massive aggravation to me is when someone says they are "on route" somewhere - oh my good God!!! And don't even get me started on the use of apostrophes!!!

Gah! When people call their children little "angles" it drives me nuts! I want to write "stop being obtuse" or "what acute-y" 😂

Pineappletastic · 08/09/2016 19:16

I agree that autocorrect is evil.

I had to hide my DM on FB after she posted some vomit inducing thing about 'We love & miss are darling daughter' - shudder.

My pet hate at the moment is people failing to capitalise their child's name in posts.

shouldwestayorshouldwego · 08/09/2016 19:20

Aren't you all lucky to be able to spell. Watching dd struggle to spell even very simple words and spend ages learning a spelling only to forget it the next day. Until you have sat for years trying to listen to her read and working through spelling lists and seen the effort she puts in then don't judge her. Oh and she always 'seems intelligent'.

AnotherUsernameBitesTheDust · 08/09/2016 19:27

Rest bite drives me bonkers! What the hell do they think it means? It makes no sense. It's not just on MN (to be honest, I've never actually seen it on here) but I saw it on another forum I was on way back when I first got the internet (2003!) and I see it on SN pages on Facebook.

I always laugh at people who love their little angles. Grin At least that one makes me laugh.

Unlike should of, they're, their, there, your, you're, no, know. I could go on. And on. And on.

oldlaundbooth · 08/09/2016 19:37

Don't get me started or I'll loose it.

HeCantBeSerious · 08/09/2016 19:40

Someone I know signed off a post with "chow" yesterday. Shock

oldlaundbooth · 08/09/2016 19:40

And that bullshit 'Love your spouse' challenge on FaceFucker is driving me mad too.

I've just ordered a copy of the 'Darling Buds of May' in actual book form to read on the train instead of all this social media #imanidiot bollocks that's infiltrated our world.

oldlaundbooth · 08/09/2016 19:40

Chow - ha! Grin

SecretNutellaFix · 08/09/2016 19:40

I'm happy to admit that when I am typing quickly, as part of a fast moving conversation, my fingers hit the keys in the wrong order sometimes.

Nearly every instance of the becomes teh and because becomes becasue.

LRDtheFeministDragon · 08/09/2016 19:44

should, that's rotten. Hope your DD knows that spelling is no measure at all of how intelligent you are.

RachelRagged · 08/09/2016 19:47

Angle. Angle is a measurement not Angel
That makes me think ffs
Rip little Angle is usually the context

Giratina · 08/09/2016 19:48

A friend of mine posted a picture on facebook of one of those word cloud picture things she had made. It had some really massive, glaring spelling mistakes in it. She had already given it to the recipient so I couldn't say anything without looking like a total bitch but it gave me the rage seeing it on my timeline, I feel sorry for the person who got it and has to have it in their house.

bookwormnerd · 08/09/2016 19:50

Your daughter will get there shouldwestayorshouldwego. I struggled and can see my daughter struggling now. Its heart breaking watching my dd try so hard and it not sticking when she is an intelligent girl. People ignore her artistic talent due to she finds reading and spelling hard. They ignore her imagination and wonderful story telling all because placing letters correctly and learning a grammar rule is more important. I managed to get a degree and post graduate despite having struggled. Its just a shame people feel the need to look down on others. Even without learning difficulties being able to spell and use grammar makes you no more intelligent. A lot of people will type as they speak as it is informal. No wonder children who struggle don't want to try when they will get judged.

CrohnicallyAspie · 08/09/2016 19:55

Giratina I got given one of those with spelling mistakes. Was it a red apple shape by any chance?

CrohnicallyAspie · 08/09/2016 19:56

Giratina I got given one of those with spelling mistakes in- was it a red apple by any chance? Or are there 2 of us suffering with misspelled word clouds that we can't bear to look at but can't bear to get rid of either?

LRDtheFeministDragon · 08/09/2016 19:57

book - I think things are changing, though. I keep hoping so. It's certainly less acceptable where I teach now, to make a big deal of spelling and grammar, than it was even ten years ago.

Albadross · 08/09/2016 20:04

People on here keep saying 'by what you have wrote' and I notice the words 'to the' have dropped from 'I'm going to the shop'.

When you seen her did she...?

Oh dear. They're all flooding back to me 'know' Hmm

bookwormnerd · 08/09/2016 20:08

Oh it is changing in some places I think. I remember in my teacher training the tutor being absolutely gobsmacked as a majority of us had not been taught grammar. My daughter is currently struggling as I suspect and others also agree she may be dyslexic like myself. For her the phonetic way of teaching does not work. She can learn spellings visually by shape of word and has amazing memory but struggles with blending and spelling words she does not know. I was the same way. A lot of people I have as friends on facebook are same age as me and were also not taught grammar so to be honest I refuse to judge as it is a product or our education. I think children also struggle now as taught phonetically, learn that words looks right to them and then struggle to correct later on. My daughter had a teacher who has not been overly supportive, I'm hoping this year it is better.

HeCantBeSerious · 08/09/2016 20:10

It's an epidemic.

Spelling mistakes on social media
BoredOnMatLeave · 08/09/2016 20:14

Deleted someone today due to her constantly posting about her 'gorwgus little angles'

Karlakitten1 · 08/09/2016 20:16

Chow is bye in Spanish! Informally, anyway! Grin

HeCantBeSerious · 08/09/2016 20:19

Chow is bye in Spanish! Informally, anyway!

Italian. Hmm. And it's spelled "ciao".

Owllady · 08/09/2016 20:20

I don't ever use 'on route' but what is wrong with it?
Does going along the route? Or do you mean it should be descriptive of a root?
I've just realised in my own head it's en route
Lol
But I'll leave this up anyhow
I'm from the black country though and our dialect has often been mocked by the rest of the country. Turns out its the closest to Saxon dialect

allyre · 08/09/2016 20:32

I forgot to mention my particular favourite though - an item for sale on a local facebook page, think it was a lamp with the heading "Shabby Sheikh". I'm not adverse to a shabby sheikh but I don't think I would buy him on facebook.

overwhelmed34 · 08/09/2016 20:33

Yanbu. It changes how I view people. I don't like myself for it but there you go...
amysmummy I'm now hoping someone posts about their 'angle' so I can make your acute joke! Brilliant!
