Spelling mistakes on social media

allyre · 08/09/2016 18:07

Am I wrong to be completely outraged by the spelling mistakes on social media? Why are there so many people who can't tell the difference between "two", "too" or "to" or "there" and "their". Another cause of massive aggravation to me is when someone says they are "on route" somewhere - oh my good God!!! And don't even get me started on the use of apostrophes!!!

Ewe Our Bean Unreasonable!

Katedotness1963 · 08/09/2016 18:37

I blame some of it on autocorrect. It's a pain in the arse, I'm sick of having my, correctly spelled, words changed.

JacquesHammer · 08/09/2016 18:38

I must admit I did make mention of Caractacus Potts.

He didn't get it

iklboo · 08/09/2016 18:39

Ex SIL thought it was perfectly acceptable to abbreviate couldn't to cunt. As in 'she cunt go to school cos she were ill'.

puglife15 · 08/09/2016 18:39

I keep meaning to ask...

Is the spelling of respite as "rest bite" on here an in joke?

I keep seeing it.

MrsTerryPratchett · 08/09/2016 18:40

'I cunt care less' has a certain ring to it.

puglife15 · 08/09/2016 18:40

Maybe they think they're having a bite of rest?! Like a morsel of rest?

Blondieblondie · 08/09/2016 18:42

The increasing use of alot. I cannot stand that. My phone wouldn'teven let me type it in quotation marks, so how and why are people doing it?!

SarkySara · 08/09/2016 18:42

Yanbu it's shocking how many people can't spell simple words or use the correct word e.g your & there. Really winds me up! It's especially funny if they post a really indignant rant about something and it's not spelt correctly.

QueenLaBeefah · 08/09/2016 18:43

I'm always amazed how many people can't tell the difference between lose/loose.

LRDtheFeministDragon · 08/09/2016 18:45

But it's not a new thing. People have been complaining about the shockingly poor written English of the present age for centuries. And blaming it on whatever current fad in education was the thing at the time.

Fanjolena · 08/09/2016 18:45

I'm not usually bothered by things like this but "fly with the angles" makes me facepalm every time I see it.Confused

jellycat1 · 08/09/2016 18:46

Yanbu.

CrazyCatLaydee123 · 08/09/2016 18:52

In a Facebook local selling group I once saw "Chesta draws" for sale.

I've also gone as far as a ranty post at a family member for saying:

"I love this women so much"

Hopefully haven't just outed myself.

Fanjolena · 08/09/2016 18:53

I have mild LDs which affect my grammar and spelling but I always try to correct if I notice I've made a mistake.

HereIAm20 · 08/09/2016 18:55

"Are" family "defiantly" doesn't like it either!

And don't get me started on should of, would of etc!

Darkswan · 08/09/2016 19:00

Keep seeing things "for sell" on facebook and it annoys me more than it should.

Autocorrect has stitched me up more than once though, so I tend to ignore little mistakes. And when I see alot i just think of this and it makes me smile

GiddyOnZackHunt · 08/09/2016 19:04

'doesn't effect use...' on fb selling pages.

bookwormnerd · 08/09/2016 19:06

I have to say I have never understood why people get so hung up on others peoples spelling and punctuation. I'm dyslexic so am not a good speller. I do try keep my punctuation correct and spell check but that's practice due to I am a teacher though currently sahm. Language is fluid and will evolve so our spelling will probably change over time anyway. I do tend to see social media as something people are using to chat and to update family and friends, not writing an essay or book so cannot understand getting hung up over it. I certainly dont mean it if I misspell things. I think it just comes over as judgemental. I know I never got taught punctuation properly at school and I self taught so I wouldent judge others. Some of the people I went to university with who were incredibly smart were awful spellers so certainly wasn't a reflection on their intelligence. Maybe I am just more sensitive to it after being called thick at primary school as could not spell.

TheNaze73 · 08/09/2016 19:08

It grinds my gears. 'They're' utter cults Wink

bookwormnerd · 08/09/2016 19:11

That should say punctuation and grammar.

ABloodyDifficultWoman · 08/09/2016 19:13

I've noticed a strange one lately that is becoming more prevalent - the use of 'been' where 'being' should be. Do people seriously not know the difference - or do they just not care?

Ego147 · 08/09/2016 19:13

I'm just waiting for the OP to come back and make some SPAG errors.
It's the law when complaining about SPAG errors that such things happen.

Skittlesss · 08/09/2016 19:13

When people say they brought it and they actually mean they bought it.

I too thought REST BITE was a mumsnet thing.

On route annoys me too. I always thought those who spell it correctly were in the job, but have seen some of my colleagues write it too... Hmm

CrohnicallyAspie · 08/09/2016 19:16

Not FB- but spelling/grammar related. I was out for a walk at the seaside, and my SIL needed to stop and rest briefly. She chose a lovely carved wooden bench overlooking the beach to sit on. As she sat there I read the inscription- something along the lines of "you're sole"

The amount of money the bench must have cost, and they didn't even get it proof read!
