To not take DS to A&E

AtSea1979 · 06/09/2016 19:20

His teacher said to get it looked at but I doubt they'd do anything.

DS might have broken his finger, it doesn't look bent, it's swollen and sore though, he can't straighten the end joint. I doubt A&E would do anything other than splint it which I can do. AIBU not to take him and sit there for hours?

Err, take him Hmm
His poor finger, looks sore

ohtheholidays · 06/09/2016 20:10

Why had you already left it 24 hours?I think like most other posters I thought he'd done it today a few hours ago!

followTheyellowbrickRoad · 06/09/2016 20:11

I would take him to. My dd hurt hers catching a ball. I didn't take take her as it was just a little swollen and it wasn't a hard ball. It was a week later when she said it was still sore. She ended up having to wear a mallet splint for 6 weeks.

HappyAxolotl · 06/09/2016 20:12

Are you serious? He can't straighten the finger, no-one can tell by looking whether it is broken or not, but you're still set on doing a homemade bodge job on it?

Wolfiefan · 06/09/2016 20:13

Poor child.
That is all.

Lweji · 06/09/2016 20:16

Ok I'll tuck him up and reassess tomorrow

Seriously?

It's not that late, FGS.

CheeseFlavouredDiscs · 06/09/2016 20:20

No you do not need to take him to A&E

BUT you do need to take him to your local minor injuries unit.

It isn't likely to make any difference whether you take him now or tomorrow morning. However, it does need an X-ray just to be sure exactly what damage has been done, and to ensure that your son receives suitable treatment. I agree that it does look pretty straight forward, but you should always get these things checked out fairly quickly, especially if there is any loss of mobility.

WankingMonkey · 06/09/2016 20:21

I would always take my kid to A+E (or minor injuries..we arent lucky enough to have one of those here though) rather than treat them myself. For me of DH we would probably just split it ourselves as well as we could then maybe make a GP appointment to check it. But with the kids, not worth the risk.

WankingMonkey · 06/09/2016 20:21

Also I think if its broken and starts setting wrong, they may have to rebreak it? That may just be for noses and wrists, but it has happened in the family with both of those.

Goingtobeawesome · 06/09/2016 20:23

DS had his finger bashed with a bowling ball. Rang minor injuries. They were lovely and said bring him in and we'll just double check. They X rayed him and bandaged it up as not broken but sore and swollen. All done in less than an hour.

Take him.

YolandiFuckinVisser · 06/09/2016 20:27

DD dislocated her finger on a supermarket trolley, took her to a&e where they popped it back in place & x-rayed it. The x-rayed revealed a fracture in her knuckle that required surgery to pin it. Without the surgery she would most likely have a badly misshapen finger without full mobility and possibly growth inhibition in that digit.

Take him to a&e or at least minor injury unit!

yeOldeTrout · 06/09/2016 20:45

Twice DS screamed blue murder about bashing his elbow, so we took him to be Xrayed after 36 hours of him wimpering & refusing to even use that arm... Nothing. Zilch, nada, just bruised. I fully understand the reluctance and it probably will be a waste of time... but it may not be. So you have to get it checked if it's not improving already. (And schools are very over-cautious, too, which doesn't help) Sympathies!! Flowers

TheFullMinty · 06/09/2016 20:46

Wow. What the actual fuck. Did you think you were going to get scores of people telling you 'aye it's fine'? Of course you should take him rather than taking photos and putting them on the Internet.

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 06/09/2016 20:55

Take him to the GP at least in the morning!

mineofuselessinformation · 06/09/2016 21:03

Have you considered that he can't or won't straighten the finger because it's seriously injured?
I once allowed my then (very definitely now X) H to persuade me to leave dc1's thumb overnight after they hurt it.... It was swollen like a sausage when they woke. Straight to A&E. It was broken.
Never again..... Angry

WankingMonkey · 06/09/2016 21:08

As a teen, I convinced my dad (by refusing to move) that a cut on my hand was absolutely fine and that they would do nothing for it anyway. Next morning he took me and they said if I had gone on the nighttime they could have stitched it properly and I would barely have had even a scar...as it happens to this day I have a huge angry purple scar on the back of my hand and my dad still feels guilty even though it was my fault.

Now thats just a scar..nothing really. How would you feel if your son has long lasting issues because you didn't take him when he clearly needed it seen to?

I really hope you are right and he is just exaggerating, but those pictures look nasty and I feel he does really need it sorted :/

CrazyNameCrazyGuy · 06/09/2016 21:09

Apologies if I missed a post, but how did he do it OP?

The black fingernail looks like he's trapped his finger in something.

francii · 06/09/2016 21:11

I ruptured the tendon in my middle finger last year and couldn't straighten the tip, if he's done the same thing he needs a proper splint, I had one on for months! please at least take him tomorrow and let them check it!

GabsAlot · 06/09/2016 21:14

he done it yesterday and yet he went back into school still hurting and cant bend it

and youre asking us if yabu

Meadows76 · 06/09/2016 21:19

Holy crap. Are you serious? Take your child to see a doctor.

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 06/09/2016 21:22

This is as bad as the thread the other day where the poster was convinced a cut couldn't be stitched if it was a couple of days old.

Mojito6 · 06/09/2016 21:22

I would have at least taken him to the gp today if it happened yesterday and it looked like that!

WankingMonkey · 06/09/2016 21:24

This is as bad as the thread the other day where the poster was convinced a cut couldn't be stitched if it was a couple of days old.

I missed this, but thats actually been my experience? I had a huge gash on the back of my left hand, refused to go get it sorted thinking it would sort itself. Next day was dragged there as it was still bleeding. Hospital said they couldn't stitch but they could stick some butterfly stitches (I think they were called) on which were basically just thin plasters part holding it together. Was told if I had gone earlier I could have had it stitched properly...

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 06/09/2016 21:27

Wanking- a cut can be stitched and this one definitely needed to be but poster was sure as MN had said it couldn't be stitched she wasn't sure what the hospital would do.

Clearly you shouldn't presume what the hospital will or won't do unless you have a medical degree .

MrTCakes · 06/09/2016 21:29

He hasn't been able to straighten it for 24 hours and you still haven't taken him? The fuck is wrong with you?
