To not take DS to A&E

AtSea1979 · 06/09/2016 19:20

His teacher said to get it looked at but I doubt they'd do anything.

DS might have broken his finger, it doesn't look bent, it's swollen and sore though, he can't straighten the end joint. I doubt A&E would do anything other than splint it which I can do. AIBU not to take him and sit there for hours?

My dd injured her toe once and it looked like it could be broken due to the way the nail bled/pain/bruising etc. We took her to the miu who were great and cleaned and bandaged it for her. They asked why we hadn't gone to a&e and I said I didn't think it warranted it and they said I was right, that they try to avoid x raying children as much as possible and they wouldn't do anything the miu couldn't do anyway. We were advised to have it checked by our gp a few days later to check healing just in case.

ohtheholidays · 06/09/2016 19:47

I'd be taking him OP,what can look like a simple break can be much worse, trapped nerves, the break doesn't heal properly and it leads to more serious problems and operations in the future.

It's just really not worth the risk in the future, take it from someone that was run over at 9 years old, didn't get the proper care from the hospital or my Mother and ended up with arthiritis and a severed nerve that runs all the way down my spine from when I was 9 years old.

yeOldeTrout · 06/09/2016 19:48

They will xray it.
However, it can wait until tomorrow,I wouldn't want to drag a kid to A&E this time of night.
7am or 8:30am, before the 10am rush (yes there is one) would be good time.

CrazyNameCrazyGuy · 06/09/2016 19:48

Most minor injuries units would deal with this. If they think it needs hospital attention then they refer you on to the local A&E.

This is the bruising underneath. Nail is black. Will post that pic when anyone squeamish has left

Poor son. You are seriously trying to splint a finger which he cannot straighten and he has no pain relief. How bloody cruel.

mumeeee · 06/09/2016 19:50

Take him to A &E if he can't straighten it he definitely needs it looked at

Discobabe · 06/09/2016 19:50

Our local miu is further than a&e but we were the only people there. It was great! And as above, so fast.

AtSea1979 · 06/09/2016 19:50

Just reluctant to get DD out of bed, and DS is tired and just wants his bed.

Take him, my DP regularly ignores broken fingers from playing rugby and has lost the use of two thanks to them healing awkwardly.

WiddlinDiddlin · 06/09/2016 19:51

Basic first aid - splint it, anti inflammatories, minor injuries if its not progressing as it should tomorrow (ie, inflammation should go down, nerve function all good - if its getting bigger, hurtier or hes lacking sensation then go get it seen).

It is not an emergency, thus it is not something for A&E.

MushuDragon · 06/09/2016 19:51

Get someone to watch DD and take him

AtSea1979 · 06/09/2016 19:53

I haven't tried to straighten it, I asked DS to. Unfortunately DS has a habit of over dramatising pain, resulting in a few A&E trips that were unwarranted just to be on 'safe side' hence why I'm hesitant now.

Take him! Ds did similar, I didn't think much of it at first but took him. He had broken the tip of his finger and had to have it in a splint for 2 weeks. Apparently they can get mallet finger (I think that's what it's called) where the finger can stay permanently crooked.

Take him. Yes they may just splint it, but I've seen a few fingers with loss of function from not being treated properly at the time they were broken. It may also require straightening (under sedation or GA) and a proper splint applied rather than just finger strapping.

Ginslinger · 06/09/2016 19:54

it's not an emergency - splint, calpol and reassess in the morning

insan1tyscartching · 06/09/2016 19:55

When ds was eleven he came home and said he'd hurt his thumb when he nearly fell off of his bike. It wasn't swollen or bruised so I gave him painkillers and he went to bed. The next morning dh took him to A&E because it was still hurting, it was xrayed and he was put in a cast as it was broken.
The doctor informed Social Services because firstly we hadn't taken him to A&E the night previously and secondly ds had lied to us about how he'd hurt his thumb (he'd been wrestling with his mates) so they believed it was a suspicious injury
There was no action because they rung his school and GP but it was uncomfortable in A&E being told it was going to be referred.
If you have been advised by school you need to take your son to A&E because it might raise concerns otherwise.

AtSea1979 · 06/09/2016 19:56

It's been 24 hours since he did it. No one from school called to say there were concerned they just told DS to get it looked at. He's fine if I don't mess with it, I mean he hasn't had calpol today or anything.
It is more swollen tonight though but yesterday eve I kept it cool.

I'd take him in the morning.

lifesuckssometimes · 06/09/2016 19:56

I think the bleeding under the nail
Is probably causing the pain. Quick hot needle releases the blood and pressure. Hope he is okay.

AtSea1979 · 06/09/2016 19:57

Ok I'll tuck him up and reassess tomorrow

MIUs close at 8pm.

Itis6oclocksomewhere · 06/09/2016 20:02

My DD1 broke her two smallest fingers on her right hand a few years ago.
I wasn't sure if A&E would do anything, but I'm glad we went. She had broken near where the growth plates are and needed to be monitored for a few months. Touch and go whether they needed to operate and in the end they decided not to, but they said it was still important for fingers to get looked at especially with children.
DD wasn't in much pain, apart from initial impact! She had a bit big bruising and fingers were swollen.

user1471098628 · 06/09/2016 20:04

The fuck is wrong with you.

"AIBU to not seek medical treatment for a child?"
YABU!
"I'll take him tomorrow."

I know it's a fuck on, parenting your children, getting one out of bed, etc. But come on, that looks painful. Poor child. No wonder he over dramatises, probably wants to make sure someone will actually do something.
