AIBU?

bus using our driveway to turn around every day.

Scene - basically, we live on a main road, with a private dead end service road for us to get to our houses and parking spaces. There are 8 houses along our little row. We have a drive outside our house, then the service lane, then another parking space, then a small strip of grass (ours) then the main road.

I have noticed that a small bus (18 seater maybe??) has started collecting a dc from our row of houses, and is using our parking space and grass to turn around each morning and afternoon. The alternative would be to reverse back down the lane and turn around at the entrance.

For some reason this really annoys me that the bus driver does this twice a day. We now have tyre marks on the grass, and I think it will add to the break up of the road surface.
DH is not bothered, saying he has to turn around somewhere, but it annoys me. AIBU?

I'd put something large and visible on the corner of grass that is being churned. It sounds like the driver just needs to turn more tightly or put and extra bit of reversing into his turn, rather than almost turning and then driving the last bit over your grass.

Fill some ice cream tubs/sandcastle buckets with concrete. Paint white. Leave dotted around the edge of the grass.

Then film it for our viewing pleasure :D

Get your big girl pants on and pleasantly ask him to use the drive of the kid he picks up. Point out the damaged grass. He might not have been shaking his head as a no, he might just have been shaking his head to indicate he didn't understand what you wanted, especially if your dd was outside.

If he ignores you then let hell break loose as you complain to the company.

Park your bins there for a week or so until he gets into a new habit

I used to be a bus driver and I would encourage you to use white rocks. It sounds like he is just being careless and thoughtless.

Also, buses aren't supposed to reverse with passengers on, except in an emergency or if there is no other option ie turning round when there is no other way out

It won't take long before your grass is damaged. From the drivers behaviour it doesn't sound like he's going to give a damn.

A few thoughts. Speak to the adults in the house the child is collected from; speak to the bus company if vehicle has a logo (take note of registration). Take some photos/videos for id purposes.

If that all fails then you need a physical barrier of some kind to prevent this. Rocks, bollards or even trees/shrubs.

You can buy verge posts/markers like this www.cromwell.co.uk/shop/site-safety/access-barriers/hev040-106-500-wychwood-flexible-verge-post/p/JSP9926964D?utm_campaign=pla+-+&utm_source=google&utm_medium=shopping-pla&utm_keyword=JSP9926964D&istCompanyId=6aa6787b-063e-4414-802d-129f235df603&istItemId=aqrxrmiqr&istBid=tztx or this www.jacksons-fencing.co.uk/product/sc_200882bm/verge-protection-marker-post-planed-finish-0.6m-95-x-95mm-jakcured-inc-2-red-reflectors.aspx?agid=157&tpc=AB&fmc=DA&fnc=AX&timber=1&gclid=CL-qzuuu-s4CFceVGwod8VQCUA

I'd suggest speaking to the driver first but it sounds like that wouldn't achieve anything but more bother.

Contact the bus company. Or if you don't know that but know the school, then contact their office. We complained about the school bus driver constantly parking on the yellow zigzags and blocking the road. This only started after the drivers changed and the new one couldn't reverse into the allocated space. They now park in the school car park to pick up and drop off, so safer and easier for everyone.

I was going to say- done you know the neighbour he picks up from? I'd have a word with them first.

The go away hand thing would be enough for me to put some big white boulders there. Don't bother talking to him he'll probably get defensive.

Of course it's not okay for him to be using your driveway/trashing your bit of grass twice a day. Can you block it off?

Is it possible to turn around at the child's house?
Those who have said the child can wait on the main road are being unreasonable. There will be a reason why the service is door to door. Personally I would ask him to avoid your grass and see if he does that first.

I get the irritation with driving on the grass, it will ruin it, especially in wet weather. Try speaking to the driver, or put anti parking rocks around the edge of the grass. Otherwise, I don't get the English rage about people turning in your gateway or drive. I'm not from here, and it always surprises me when you see the 'no turning' signs on peoples driveways - does it really spoil your day if somebody needs to turn around and uses your gate?
With regard to the child going out onto the road to catch the bus, it is likely a SN collection (normal school buses are big and do not come to the house for each child) and they have the right to be collected from their door. But do ask for them not to go on the grass.

Him waving at me to go away would draw the line
I'd be straight on the phone to the bus company
It's not the neighbours problem or the schools

I wouldn't speak to the neighbour or the bus company. I would speak to the council who the contract is with. It is up to them to sort this out.

Can't you leave a car parked in the space so he can't use it to turn round?

Talk to his company: it's entirely unfair of him to do this, but chances are a picked up child has SN, and interrupting their journey to school may have long term repercussions for them- I remember when a neighbour who didn't think taxis should use our road banged on our SN taxi, one of the other children would never get in it again. it's possible that's why the driver waved at you to go away, though chances are he's just very rude.

YANBU at all but handle with compassion. the LEA should hold details of the firm if needed.

What RedSauce says - I would be willing to let them turn as a sort of live and let live/good deed type thing but him just waiving 'go away' at you would have me seeing red.

Call the bus co. Can't understand why they can't turn around in the drive of the child being picked up.

You do realise that if some hits one of the stones, you are responsible for any damage to their car/bus.

Absolute rubbish! No way on earth is this true otherwise it would be complete chaos. However if you insist on giving out false advice I would like to see your reference for this.

If it's a nice day tomorrow go out with a chair, a book and some coffee and sit right where he's turning round. Or else buy a few cheap plants and put them in along the border, but be out there gardening when he comes.

Actually, thinking about it, could you not plant a wee hedge or something?

Report
honkinghaddock · 06/09/2016 10:16

Does the bus have a taxi firm number on it? If it does I would ring and talk to them first. It is possible that if you ring the LA and kick off, they may tell the child to wait at the end of the road (because it is the easiest option for the LA) and this could create major difficulties for the child and their family.

"Why would OP be liable, bakeoff? Isn't the grass the same as her garden?"

Well my council, must be lying to us then! We get a note about once every two years, reminding us of that we are liable. We live in a village and the lanes are very narrow. Quite a few selfish people put rocks on their tiny bit of grass verge, thus making it very difficult for large vans, etc to get down the lane.

Phone the company, he's taking the piss. Cheeky git.

It seems the family have a drive, so he should use their's.
occasionally wouldn't bother me, but twice every school day for the indefinite future, I don't think so.
Phone the bus company & tell them that your drive is private property, & he will not be able to turn there anymore (car, rocks, bins, ) so they will need to talk to driver & arrange an alternative.

The trouble is with a private road the residents are responsible for paying for the surfacing. If a bus is going over it it will need replacing far sooner than just cars.

I suspect for this you will need your residents association together to decide if the person with the bus should pay more towards the road.
