bus using our driveway to turn around every day.

Scene - basically, we live on a main road, with a private dead end service road for us to get to our houses and parking spaces. There are 8 houses along our little row. We have a drive outside our house, then the service lane, then another parking space, then a small strip of grass (ours) then the main road.

I have noticed that a small bus (18 seater maybe??) has started collecting a dc from our row of houses, and is using our parking space and grass to turn around each morning and afternoon. The alternative would be to reverse back down the lane and turn around at the entrance.

For some reason this really annoys me that the bus driver does this twice a day. We now have tyre marks on the grass, and I think it will add to the break up of the road surface.
DH is not bothered, saying he has to turn around somewhere, but it annoys me. AIBU?

YABU
Why not cut another person some slack in life for something so small? Even if a small portion of your grass turns a bit muddy so what? It's not like you're going to be sun bathing out there in the deep mid winter is it?

JacquettaWoodville · 06/09/2016 09:15

Why would OP be liable, bakeoff? Isn't the grass the same as her garden?

YelloDraw · 06/09/2016 09:16

You do realise that if some hits one of the stones, you are responsible for any damage to their car/bus.

Fuck off is she. OP's land, she can put some rocks on it, or a fence, or whatever she wants to act as a boundary and deter people from driving over her grass.

White painted small rocks are the universal item used to denonte 'this grass is not for driving over or parking on'.

FeralBeryl · 06/09/2016 09:17

bakeoff surely not if the grass is on your property? I agree that communal land may leave you liable for damage if you leave rocks etc but if it's actually the OP's.
That would be like someone hitting my gatepost whilst reversing off my path when they shouldn't be on there wouldn't it?

Mojito6 · 06/09/2016 09:19

I personally wouldn't be brave enough to speak to the driver but would probably leave some passive aggressive sign on the grass that says something along the lines of "private land - no turning"

Andrewofgg · 06/09/2016 09:20

SN is irrelevant - if it's private property it's private property.

Speak to the driver once and to the company once then penguin bollards or a chain with a padlock. TNS about this.

ChardonnayKnickertonSmythe · 06/09/2016 09:21

Surely council grass is not for wrecking there. Hmm

ThumbWitchesAbroad · 06/09/2016 09:21

Definitely rude to go over your grass - not an issue to use your driveway or the service road, although I'm having trouble visualising your "scene" - any chance of a diagram?

Re. the grass I also suggest putting something in it or around it - painted white rocks, little posts, bollards (not penguin!) etc.

But I also agree with your DH that the bus needs to turn somewhere, it just shouldn't involve your grass.

klch14 · 06/09/2016 09:21

This kind of thing really gets on my nerves! I'd do something petty like park my car there just so he couldn't turn around.

WeAllHaveWings · 06/09/2016 09:23

YANBU at all!! Phone the bus company and tell them the bus is using and damaging your property and can they stop using your driveway for turns. Not need to complain, just request politely and they should stop before you need to resort to penguin bollards.

It is then the responsibility of the bus company to work out a safe solution. Not your issue.

ColdTeaAgain · 06/09/2016 09:25

I wouldn't be happy either. It was really hard work getting our grass looking half decent, if someone started driving a bloody bus over it I'd be a tad upset!

Penguin bollards.

Bake off cake really? When they're on her own property?

LizzieMacQueen · 06/09/2016 09:33

Can he reverse into your cul de sac, that surely would be safer than reversing out.

YANBU I would be pissed off too.

Madeupforthis · 06/09/2016 09:33

I don't think I would leave my car there to deter him, as that seems deliberately provocative given that you have a drive and parking space but no, you are def NBU! A call to the bus company and then some bollards/a fence if this doesn't improve. No need to get in to an argument.

Ego147 · 06/09/2016 09:36

You could speak to the driver rather than doing all the other stuff. Most people are accommodating if you speak to them and explain the problem.

Then if that fails, speak to the bus company and escalate it.

Blindassasin. My dh would be incandescent if a bus habitually damaged our grass. This isn't ok. It's private property. We paid good money to have turf laid and watered it so it took and now regularly mow it. Different people have different values.

Op not ok. They also shouldn't turn around on your property. On the dropped kerb and up to your property - fine. I would ask them not to do it. If they don't, I think you'd be in your rights to put boards with nails on the edge of the drive or square edging tiles on the grass edge with the points sticking up to shred the tiles and deter them. I'm not suggesting you do this just that I don't think it would be illegal.

whatatod0 · 06/09/2016 09:43

ok - to clarify - he is not actually driving OVER our grass, it is just that he misjudges the end of our parking space and his front wheels go onto the grass as he does his 3 point turn. So to be fair, it is just a small area of the grass getting churned up by his front wheels.
It is more the fact that he uses my house to turn around in, rather than the house he picks up from.
I was actually standing by my window this morning, waiting to wave to my dd as she whizzed past on the bus to school, when the bus came along. The driver looked right at me and as I shook my head, he waved go away at me. I don't want to speak to him.

OP posts:
Mummyoflittledragon · 06/09/2016 09:46

Now I'm really confused. Who's grass?

I would write to the bus company and tell them this. Waving to DD, your head shake and his gesture etc. Ask him to find an alternative turning solution. Can't you out your car in the space?

PovertyPain · 06/09/2016 09:49

The driver looked right at me and as I shook my head, he waved go away at me. I don't want to speak to him

It sounds as if he knows what he's doing and doesn't give a fuck. Cheeky fucker. Def put rocks out there. It will be a mud bath in no time and if there are kerbs, they with be wrecked in no time. That dismissive attitude would really get my back up.

DailyMailEthicalFail · 06/09/2016 09:49

Write to the bus Co and ask them not to do it.

Ah well, if he's been rude I would call the bus company and ask them to tell him to stop turning around on private property
