To enjoy being in hospital?

startingtolooklikemother · 03/09/2016 20:58

I fell slipped and fell over on the worlds smallest hill on Friday and managed to dislocate my foot as well as breaking my ankle in 3 places
Thing is I'm actually enjoying being in hospital even though I thought it was going to be awful. The food isn't bad, I can't walk so someone brings me loads of cups of tea, changed my bed, plumps my pillows and generally feels sorry for me. yesterday I spent all day in bed eating Jaffa cakes watching day time to and slightly off my face on morphine
I know it's not exactly where I would choose for a mini break but compared to home life its a doddle
Of course I miss my DS and DH but god it's lovely having everyone run round after me.

Good Lord! You lot are nuts. I have only been in hospital twice, for two c-secs, and both times I couldn't wait to get out. Despite having two lovely little squishy babies to hold, they are definitely the worst days of my life, especially for the the first, where I was in labour for three days first, then had to stay for another five. Both times I begged to be discharged early and probably came out a bit too soon. I do understand the longing to sleep and relax and be taken care of, though. Just didn't find any of that in hospital :-(

FlorisApple · 04/09/2016 06:53

Btw, in Australia, many people who have private health insurance do get put up in a five star hotel after the birth - it cost the insurance company less that the cost of the hospital room.

BikeRunSki · 04/09/2016 06:57

I also love being in hospital. Unfortunately, extended stays have always involved hyperemisis or complicated childbirth, but I love the steady routine and being looked after. I had a 16 day stint with hyperemisis and was completely institutionalise by the time I came home.

RawPrawn · 04/09/2016 07:06

Another one who quite fancies a short prison sentence. Imagine the reading you could get done.

daimbar · 04/09/2016 07:58

Glad you are having a good experience OP.

My local hospital is in a bad way. When I was admitted recently the ward was freezing cold, understaffed and hectic. Not the fault of the staff but it was no place for sick people. Couldn't wait to get home.

Princecharlesfirstwife · 04/09/2016 08:34

I had a whole 5 weeks in hospital pre birth of dc3. I still look back on that time with fondness 10 years later. Created quite the little routine for myself. Breakfast, Frasier, Everybody Loves Raymond, cup of tea and biscuit brought to me by the lovely trolley lady, This Morning, lunch, news, snooze, cup of tea and biscuit brought by the lovely trolley lady, family visit, deal or no deal, tea, news, soaps, sleep.
Rinse and repeat X 35. All in my own room because they felt sorry for me. And because it was mostly monitoring only the odd blood test and scan to disrupt my routine. What wasn't to like?

munkisocks · 04/09/2016 08:36

I hate being in hospital. They held me hostage in one after having dd for 6 days. Wouldn't let me go as blood pressure was still too high and I was considering escaping. Then again I was on a blood drain and catheter and loads of drips so I wouldn't get far. They then tried to take me in again 3 months later when my placenta decided to finally come out. I told them I was fine and they discharged me at 5 am. Never again! I got no sleep because they came around every half hour to check blood pressure. They ended up putting me in a ward on my own so I'd get sleep.

Kingsizecrochetblanket · 04/09/2016 09:56

OP I have almost the exact same break as you!! I'm about a month in though, I can't figure out how to put an x-ray, but I've got a whacking great plate and 10 screws now. I was the victim of a bottle of procescco, a small step, gravel and crap shoes.
They only let me stay for 4 nights. I only got morphine for 2 of those.
I loved it. They were so nice to me, I felt so relaxed. That's gotta be good for healing right?
The only thing was I wasn't offered anything to help keep me regular... the morphine and cocodamol caused the worst constipation I've ever experienced! Blush

WaitrosePigeon · 04/09/2016 09:59

I also love being in hospital Blush

waits for someone to come along to moan

getyourselfchecked · 04/09/2016 10:00

Sweet jesus. I'm a doctor, YA definitely BU!

HowToLiveThisDown · 04/09/2016 10:02

Can I just say 'the lady next to me was having a very smelly poo whilst I was watching homes under the hammer' is possibly my favourite MN line ever. 😂😂😂

Cocolepew · 04/09/2016 10:12

Ouch! That looks awful Shock
I like being on a ward because I'm nosy and like to watch all the goings on.
But I like a private room for sleeping and the toilet Grin

AliceScarlett · 04/09/2016 10:25

I spent 3 weeks in a psych ward it was a lovely rest! Yanbu.

welshgirlwannabe · 04/09/2016 10:36

Yanbu. I still remember my 5 day stay from quinsy with fondness. Once the tramadol kicked in I could lie in bed, pain free and mildly off my head, watching endless episodes of grand designs and snoozing intermittently. The people I love came for just long enough to bring me expensive smoothies and new novels.

It was a good time. All that sleep!

startingtolooklikemother · 04/09/2016 10:48

Consultant has been round and I'm mildly disappointed that ankle is reducing in swelling and I might be having the operation on Monday. Am going to have a marathon effort in enjoying my last couple of days of my NHS spa

Oh bad luck Starting Grin

nellypledge16 · 04/09/2016 10:57

Oh blimey I'm howling at the homes under the hammer bit!

I've been in hospital quite a few times but usually on a neurological ward where elderly ladies frequently pooed the bed. I was in for 4 weeks the first time, with my family 2 hours drive away, it was awful.

I had a private room after my elcs with my son for 3 days and there were only 4 ladies on the whole ward so it was lovely and quiet and we basically had a midwife each to look after us, it was marvellous!

user7755 · 04/09/2016 11:14

You need to start properly milking it now - can you throw in a couple of swoons for dramatic effect?

Perhaps you need a nurse to bridge the gap for when you get home?

TooStressyForMyOwnGood · 04/09/2016 11:17

YANBU. Obviously being in hospital can be horrific but if it is for a relatively minor thing it can be a fantastic break! I had a night in hospital before having DC2. DC1 was still a toddler. It was like a spa break Grin. I can sleep through almost anything so the house didn't bother me and the staff were lovely. Plus I got a lie in til 6am!!

TooStressyForMyOwnGood · 04/09/2016 11:18

Noise not house!

Glitteryfrog · 04/09/2016 15:33

What we actually want is a 5* hotel with optional opiates?
Private rooms, good food, staff who will sympathise.

HazelBite · 04/09/2016 15:45

I had two knee replacements done last year in a local private hospital all paid for by the NHS!
Two stays one in May the second in October. I had my own room and bathroom, own TV, 3 fabulous meals a day, tea/coffee whenever I rang my bell. Pain relief on tap......
Going home was hell.

spidey66 · 04/09/2016 16:03

I was in for a hysterectomy last year, and actually it wasn't too bad. The food was a bit grim though...one time I asked for a jacket potato and tuna and I swear the spud was the size of a new potato. Other than that it was fine....i particularly enjoyed the morphine lol.

I was slightly disappointed to be discharged after two days, tbh. I think they thought I'd be delighted. Mind you I was most disappointed cos on discharge I wouldn't get any more morphine.

I'm not actually a drug addict, requesting major surgery just to get opiate-based analgesia.

Oh I have that all planned too:
I would get REDICULOUSLY ripped when not doing yoga or studying a useless extinct language.
Like proper butch man-ripped!
