To enjoy being in hospital?

startingtolooklikemother · 03/09/2016 20:58

I fell slipped and fell over on the worlds smallest hill on Friday and managed to dislocate my foot as well as breaking my ankle in 3 places
Thing is I'm actually enjoying being in hospital even though I thought it was going to be awful. The food isn't bad, I can't walk so someone brings me loads of cups of tea, changed my bed, plumps my pillows and generally feels sorry for me. yesterday I spent all day in bed eating Jaffa cakes watching day time to and slightly off my face on morphine
I know it's not exactly where I would choose for a mini break but compared to home life its a doddle
Of course I miss my DS and DH but god it's lovely having everyone run round after me.

I'd rather have the morphine and get to stay home! (Not really, I'm crap at drugs.)
Seriously, I reckon some of you need a holiday if hospital is a good deal - maybe we need to fundraise for a Mumsnet Rest Home For Harassed Parents With Too Many Toddlers. (Perhaps something along the lines of a pre-war convalescent home?)

Ooooooooh the nurse with the drug trolley is coming round, (momentarily puts down Jaffa cake to rub hands with excitement)

This thread has made me laugh. And has also made me a tiny bit envious.

I've only ever stayed on children's ward with my dd, which is always hideous and was in for a week after both children were born, but they were both unwell so it was pretty stressful. I like the thought of watching day time telly with tea and being looked after though Smile

youarenotkiddingme · 03/09/2016 21:36

Bloody he'll you did a number on that ankle Shock

Its nice to read positive stories about hospital when the staff are under so much pressure.

When I was admitted for surgery a few years ago I was truely looked after. The lady in bed next to me fell asleep (permanently Shock) and the staff treated her with such dignity. When I came round from surgery they made me tea and toast - at 2am!

When I had ds (abroad) by emcs I loved it. Room with 3 beds, balcony, nice ensuite and DS and 2 other beautiful newborns with 2 very nice mothers to spend time with.

I once had a woman who had just had dc4 beg me my to discharge her on day two. It was Christmas Eve and she said if she went home she would be expected to cook for everyone including the Inlaws who were coming and take over everything again. If I didn't discharge her she would get another day or two with just her dc4 who she felt would get lost in the fuss, her MIL would love to swop in and save dinner for her poor son and quite rightly probably felt santy would make up for her other kids missing her :)

I felt she just wants ready for discharge funny enough :)

TKRedLemonade · 03/09/2016 21:37

Wasn't

Bitofacow · 03/09/2016 21:38

Morphine ( sounds like Homer Simpson) mmmmmmm

Give me the drugs, give me the drugs.
Sod the hospital.
Thinks - have we got any Nightnurse in.......

Paulat2112 · 03/09/2016 21:42

I broke my ankle badly a few years ago. My leg looked similar to the gymnast that broke his a few weeks ago at Rio 😷 I think it's the drugs that help, I was on stuff so strong that an anaesthetist had to sign it out and it was in a locked box attached to my bed! It was so strong I had to have oxygen! Ahh the good old days! Got a big massive scar now and lots of metal in my leg. Not to mention arthritis now in my ankle :( but I can walk and run so I'm pretty grateful. The stay was rough but a break from my three kids and someone brought me food several times a day lol

Flanderspigeonmurderer · 03/09/2016 21:42

I'm jealous! My three night stay was hell on earth, but it was a post natal ward.

mrschatty · 03/09/2016 21:43

Yanbu!!! 2 weeks after I had my dd I was readmitted to hospital with sepsis (long story) was kept in for 1 week dd joined me after 2 days. We spend 5 days just cuddling and feeding and just the two of us didn't need to worry about housework cooking etc. Obviously wasn't fantastic situation but I was in the best place, surgery was a success and I had my baby with me.

mrschatty · 03/09/2016 21:43

^I had a private room

Vintagegirl1 · 03/09/2016 21:44

I have spent a lot of time in hospitals due to various health issues-cancer,pregnancy complications. I didn't like being on wards as am the world's lightest sleeper but as soon as I had my own room I loved it and didn't want to leave. Various nursing staff told me I was the best patient they had ever had as I never complained, think everyone else was desperate to get home.

unlucky83 · 03/09/2016 21:45

Another saying I love being in hospital too ...but I don't think there is a market for a similar hotel stay -because you would get the guilt and visitors/family would be less sympathetic and understanding.
(Last time I was in I had got behind with the washing (my job) and had decided the next day I was going to tackle it - there was 8 loads full easily -probably more like 10 Blush. I had got it all together and piled it up on my bedroom floor so I couldn't ignore it to sort the next morning and got taken in overnight... when I came out DP had done it all and put most of it away - had boil washed everything and tumble dried on high heat so ruined a couple of pairs of DCs leggings -but a small price to pay - I also came out on oral morphine - so felt no guilt about it -or in fact feel anything at all but a feeling of well being. I realised I was starting to get too comfortable sitting on the sofa watching daytime tv in my pjs ...so I weaned myself off it...)
Better now but when DCs were small and I had a lot on I used to also fantasise about prison....Grin

GColdtimer · 03/09/2016 21:46

OP I did exactly the same thing when I missed the last stair on Boxing Day 8 years ago. Dislocated and broken in 3 places. I was holding dd1 who was 2 at the time. My mum had to change her carpet as she couldn't walk down her stairs without reliving it! It was horrendous! After I had an initial feeling sorry for myself cry I felt the same. Dd never slept and I was exhausted. I was in for a week. Are they operating on it? Are you having to keep it elevated to reduce swelling? I was also on a ward with eccentric old ladies.

Anyway, enjoy the rest and the morphine but Flowers and lots of sympathy from me.

PovertyPain · 03/09/2016 21:46

You sound lovely TK, unlike the fucker who discharged my very ill husband on Xmas eve at 5.30pm, when he still couldn't walk unaided or eat more than a couple of mouthfuls of food. I was due to go on night duty and he begged to be allowed to stay in as he felt so ill. It would be too long to read if I went into detail. He had undiagnosed terminal prostate cancer.

SimplyNigella · 03/09/2016 21:48

I would pay a fortune for a hotel hospital. I often fantasise about contracting a non-serious, non-painful illness that requires a minimum of a week full bed rest in a private room with a compulsory biscuits to keep my strength up.

PovertyPain · 03/09/2016 21:49

On a different track' my youngest (21yr old) has SN and was really disappointed they didn't keep her in after a fit, because the staff were so nice to her. She said she wants to stay next time. Grin

Still trying to work out if it's because they were lovely or I'm a crap mum. ConfusedGrin

Bigfatnope · 03/09/2016 21:49

Yanbu to enjoy the chance to chill and recover, after all part of the healing process is recovering! Sad state of afairs though that we are so busy that we enjoy the (forced) break that hospital brings!

OnlyEatsToast · 03/09/2016 21:52

YANBU. At all. In the slightest. Am quite jealous Blush. I used to fantasise about being arrested so I could get a nights sleep during the newborn haze of DS. Enjoy your break!! Would be a real shame if you had to stay in slightly longer than expected Wink

BertieBotts · 03/09/2016 21:52

I always thought I quite liked it but last time I was in I had a horrible time where I had no idea what was happening and they kept doing things to me without explaining so it ended up really really stressful and I got really panicky. :(

WankingMonkey · 03/09/2016 21:55

I felt much like this for the first half of my 2 week stay in October. The morphine and powerful drugs did help a lot mind. I felt a bit guilty tbh at how much I enjoyed it sometimes. Being able to pee and shower in peace was fucking bliss. I had my own room and a very comfy bed...2nd week I missed the kids too much for any of the drugs/privacy/rest to matter though

BestIsWest · 03/09/2016 21:55

Sharp intake of breath at your xray Op. I once spent a fortnight in hospital after breaking both legs. It was bliss in a way. I was on morphine, I had my kindle, a daily paper and some lovely fellow patients to talk to when I felt like. I wouldn't want to do it again necessarily but it was so peaceful.

Hospitalexpert · 03/09/2016 21:56

Changed name as will reveal a bit-
Never fantasised about being in hospital but I might from now on.
Plug for the NHS being a lot cleaner on my recent stays. when I broke a hip and the room was filthy but that was 20 years ago.

Have had brain surgery and actually it was restful after the weeks planning and fear before (restful for me, my parents were awake so horrid for them). - staff were brilliant but no morphine Sad Strongest thing I got was paracetamol as they needed to monitor how concious I was.

I've been in too much with serious stuff to really want to be in, but the thought of being fed in bed on real food without the cooking and cleaning appeals a bit (live on my own abd disability makes cooking harder and often can't motivate myself be bothered to cook.)

luckylala · 03/09/2016 21:56

Enjoy it while you can, you'll be home soon and wrangling with crutches and home life and pain.

Don't envy you.
Keep up the painkillers, accept help, and hope you're on both feet soon Flowers
