I love sweet and salty

Rrross1ges · 02/09/2016 10:29

A couple of years ago our local Sainsburys were giving out samples of "cheese on toast with a twist" the twist being that they'd used a hot cross bun. It was fucking awful. Even worse than the baffling tomato and mozzarella salad I had last week, which some genius had drizzled with that bright red strawberry sauce for ice cream. Actually I quite liked the strawberry sauce thing.

thecatsclinkers · 02/09/2016 10:32

Hummus pizza is amazing, I had this just last week. A young new chef asked me to try it at an event.

Appreciate some things may sound vile, but am quite surprised at the lack of adventure on this thread!

Ememem84 · 02/09/2016 10:37

I've also made Diet Coke chicken. Yum.

Lweji · 02/09/2016 10:43

The other day I tried making a salad sauce with mayonnaise and some jam (strawberry at the time) and everyone loved it.

The salad also had pineapple, olives, apple, bacon, green and red peppers, plus pasta and chicken.
It was yummy.

Sometimes odd combinations really work.

And people complaining about fruit in savoury dishes: tomatoes, peppers, green beans, aubergine, butternut squash, courgette, lemon, orange, olives, pumpkins. Ahem

aintnothinbutagstring · 02/09/2016 10:45

Bacon on a hot cross bun is an abomination.

roseteapot101 · 02/09/2016 11:02

they sounds blugh but how else do they discover what people like. They need to trial new ideas every so often to see what people like. When people dont buy them they will try something else .I just hope the something else sounds more appetising

AnyTheWiser · 02/09/2016 11:09

Ha! We saw the ads at the cinema last week, turned to each other after the peach on pizza and, I said 'urgh', DH and DD had sparkles in their eyes and said 'that would be delicious'!
Then after the goats cheese in ommelette ad, they both turned to me and said 'can we have ommelettes for supper?'
Takes all sorts, I suppose.

HobnobDunker · 02/09/2016 12:06

I've always added instant coffee to chilli since seeing Jamie Oliver do it on his American series so I assume it would give a similar richness/smokiness to a spaghetti bolognese.

The peach pizza however I struggle with.

Bacon on a hot cross bun is an abomination.

Is that from a theological POV or a taste POV?

I haven't tried that one but I do like bacon with blueberry pancakes with a bit of maple syrup drizzled over. That is one of my favourite breakfasts ever.

MLGs · 02/09/2016 13:20

I've seen some nice ones. one involving feta cheese that didn't really seem like a twist at all tbh

MLGs · 02/09/2016 13:22

Bacon on hot cross buns sounds quite nice

A bit like Christmas cake with cheddar or stilton is nice.

Kleinzeit · 02/09/2016 13:44

Those adverts are not especially disgusting but they do depress me. It’s the suggestion that his life is so very, very boring that the most exciting thing he can think of is to put curry powder in his fish pie.

HappyAxolotl · 02/09/2016 16:51

Anyone remember the scene in Nathan Barley where Dan Ashcroft orders the coffee with salmon and scrambled eggs and all sorts in it knowing that uber-hipster-try-hard Nathan will ask for the same AND drink it - and he does?

That's you lot that is. Grin

LikeDylanInTheMovies · 02/09/2016 18:26

Happy you're right. They're all idiots.

Nathan Barley was totally fucking Mexico.

LuluJakey1 · 02/09/2016 18:36

I don't eat fish or meat but I think the combinations sound great.

We had a pizza in France this summer which was goats cheese, onion, artichokes and caramelised peach with on a base of tomato with a touch of balsamic vinegar- it was delicious.

DH had a another one with ham, onion, cheese tomato sauce and caramelised mango.

Horseradish in macaroni cheese sounds yummy. It is an underused thing.

Bollocks.
