curry powder in fish pie?
dessicated coconut in veg chilli?
tomato and basil pasta with soy sauce?

pass me the sick bucket

I thought it was just me that shuddered at most of the 'little twists' that Sainsburys have come up with.

Curry in fish pie - ok idea
But the peaches on pizza is seriously rank. I can do pork and apple sauce, but that's the limit on the meat and fruit combo.

Oh, and Dead - I'm from a BIG city :)

Grin at small town food naivety.

I made the pasta with tomato/soy sauce and it was hands down the best tomato sauce I have eaten. Genius addition IMO.

The rest of the ideas can jog on.

Whathaveilost · 02/09/2016 07:41

I Eason holiday once and ordered a veggie pizza. It came with peaches, bananans, and caramelised apples. A bit weird but better than nothing.
After all it's only dough and something sweet, like a jam buttie.

HappyAxolotl · 02/09/2016 07:44

The three in the OP sound like they could be nice. But the peachy pizza and coffee in spag bol sound foul!

I suppose peach & ham pizza isn't such a big jump from pineapple & ham. I just don't like peach though.

It almost sounds like someone there has been playing with IBMs Artificial Intelligence run recipe generator Chef Watson

Rainbow
That made me LOL.
I know what she means.

Curry fish pie ok because I like kedgeree.
I haven't seen the hoummus one yet but vegans have hoummus on pizza instead of cheese and I have tried it and it is delicious. Not sure about the peach though I went urgh the first time I saw that but I suppose never say never until you have tried it!x

needastrongone · 02/09/2016 07:51

Don't come round to my house then, I would do any of those combinations as standard, and probably more.

Most of the 'twists' are entirely standard stuff.

LunaLoveg00d · 02/09/2016 07:54

I quite fancy the Rice Krispie coated chicken goujons.

I do cornflake coated goujons - delicious. You just whizz up the cornflakes in a blender and the goujons go crispy. Must try rice crispies too.

Why are there so many threads started by people using words like "disgusting" over food choices and recipes that other people must like? It's just so juvenile and fussy. Like a toddler protesting loudly that they DON'T LIKE IT when they haven't even tried it.

No wonder there are so many fussy adult eaters around.

YADNBU coffee in bolognese? WTAF! Boak

I've had a lot of similar 'twists' in high end restaurants. Mumsnet's conservatism with food baffles me.

Wolpertinger · 02/09/2016 08:08

None of those twists are really 'out there'.

I didn't like the twists because none of them were twists, they were all pretty standard stuff to anyone who cooks a lot.

CauliflowerBalti · 02/09/2016 08:10

What an odd thread. Peach and ham is a classic combo. See also curry and fish. I can imagine coffee and spag bol work well together - it adds depth, yes? I always thought the campaign was a bit redundant, trying to encourage people out of a comfort zone they're not even in - now I see that many, many of you actually are.

needastrongone · 02/09/2016 08:12

Balsamic vinegar goes in an inordinate amount of my dishes, as does umami paste, miso paste, harissa paste. It adds depth darling Smile

Oblomov16 · 02/09/2016 08:14

Blimey! How narrow minded you all are. Horseradish, soy, coffee, chocolate, ham cooked in Coke is a CLASSIC!!

Glitterspy · 02/09/2016 08:16

I agree with Hillfarmer whatever the food choices the tone is pukesome. Condescending and enraging really. I'm off to Lidl

miwelaisjacydo · 02/09/2016 08:18

I put soy sauce in tomato pasta sauce... I did it by accident once instead of w sauce and it's lovely.

Notsoaccidentproneanymore · 02/09/2016 08:23

I just shout 'fuck off Jarvis' at the tv when the ads come on. Is he really so hard up that he's had to sink to doing Sainbro' ads?

Housewife2010 · 02/09/2016 08:24

There is a Jamie recipe of pork with peaches. We tried it and it's very nice. Incidentally, the weirdest amuse bouche I was served in France was a poached egg with a peach. I didn't like it.

5Foot5 · 02/09/2016 08:29

I didn't like the twists because none of them were twists, they were all pretty standard stuff to anyone who cooks a lot.

Well yes they are fairly normal combos. But given the horror with which some of these ideas have been greeted on here it would appear the campaign is justified. Obviously these "twists" are a bit out there to a lot of cooks. I guess a proportion of those will go "Euk" and make fake vomit noises like a child presented with something unfamiliar. But if enough people are open minded enough to give them a try then Sainsbury's have done their bit for expanding the culinary repertoire of some of the population

Ememem84 · 02/09/2016 08:29

I've had ham peach pizza. Delish. The peach is sweeter with cooked and the acidity of tomato cuts through the sweetness.

bearleftmonkeyright · 02/09/2016 08:32

I've done ham cooked in coke and its bloody awesome but it was a Nigella recipe. I tried the macaroni cheese with horseradish as a sample in store and I wasn't keen on that.

needastrongone · 02/09/2016 08:37

Nigella's ham in coke rocks. Her books are excellent btw. Mac and cheese with mustard swirled through works, also with chopped bacon. Jack Monroe adds cauliflower too, so it's kind of cauliflower, bacon mac and cheese Smile

Sainsbury's do little pots of pastes which work lovely in dishes, just a teaspoon adds flavour, umami, harissa, ras al hounout, chermoula. Otherwise, it's not my favourite supermarket.

LunaLoveg00d · 02/09/2016 08:39

ham cooked in Coke is a CLASSIC

Yes it's gorgeous - my kids love it too. And we've found it works just as well with cheap cola brands. The key is taking it out of the liquid 30 mins before it's ready and finishing it off in the oven, makes it all caramelised and lovely.

Agree with posters who have said that the "yuk", "rank" and "disgusting" comments show just how little some people actually know about food and cooking. And how unwilling grown adults are to try something a wee bit out of their comfort zone. Now I know why fish and chip shops and british breakfast places do so well in resorts overseas - it's all the people who throw their hands up in horror at the idea of paella, spanakopita or sauerkraut.

Haven't ever tried the coffee granules in spag bol, but definitely will.
