AIBU to think there is any way I won't pass norovirus on to the rest of the house?

I have just had the worst bout of norovirus I think I've ever had. Thankfully it was short lived and I'm feeling a lot better. It started on Tuesday night and lasted till about 10:30 yesterday morning. I've been in bed since, utterly shattered but not being sick at all.

Anyway, DD was in bed when I was sick the first time and our bathroom is on a different floor to her. DH slept in the spare room on Tuesday night and last night. So far they're both fine which seems a miracle. I'm washing my hands like a demon and trying not to touch DD too much, though she's only 21 months so it's quite hard as she needs nappy changes (I did one this morning) and can't get her own drinks or anything. I stayed completely away from her and DH all day yesterday while I was actually being sick etc. He had to take emergency leave to watch DD as I was not in fit shape for anything.

So, AIBU to think there is a chance they won't catch it? DD has had tummy bugs before, but this one was such a buggar I really wouldn't want my worst enemy to catch it.

I'll keep my fingers crossed for you, but IME these kind of bugs spread like wildfire regardless of precautions.
And you're usually contagious before you have symptoms, I believe?

But that's probably just me being a pessimist - hopefully both will be fine!

Me and my daughter had it, but husband avoided it bastard. I was washing my hands and sterilising surfaces like a mad woman when I got it in the hope my baby wouldn't catch it, but chances are, unless you are totally hands off and isolated from your LO, she will get it too. I do hope not though. I try to see the positives and think that it was good for my daughter's immune system the washing machine nearly packed in though

I caught norovirus when my daughter was 5 months old and managed not to pass it to her or my husband (used a separate bedroom and toilet, lots of handwashing, washing everything lots!) I was even breastfeeding at the time. She went in with my husband in spare room and took a couple of bottles, then once I was over the worst I went back to feeding her.

Yes to cleaning light switches and door handles!

It is only passed on through vomit or diarrhoea.

It is only killed by bleach.

So - wash hand thoroughly and constantly to wash away any particles.
Clean toilet, sink, taps, flush and door handle with bleach spray every time you use the loo.
Keep hair tied back.
If you're sick, change your clothes in case of too-small-to-see splash back. Same with socks.
Keep your toothbrush separate and throw it away when you've stopped being sick.

I had it and managed not to pass it on to anyone in the house. Antibac Taps/door handles etc, basically anything you touch. And burn tea-tree oil. Worked for me.

I had it when on holiday with my family and not one of them caught it. I spent 6 out of 7 days in Antigua so sick that crawling to the fridge for a drink when they all fucked off out and left me was a 30 min mission!!

Each room did have its own ensuite so that may have helped - if you have a separate bathroom maybe use that for a bit to keep any bodily fluids away from them?

I think if you are really strict about washing everything you might get lucky.

DH had a bad cold last month, then I caught the bad cold, then my DM caught the bad cold...DS who is like my little limpet managed not to get it as I pretty much washed my hands every time I sneezed, and constantly wiped his hands with wet cotton wool (a bit OTT in normal circumstances but he was only 3.5 months old then)

I had it a few years ago and nobody caught it AND I was breastfeeding.

DS had it a few months ago and no one else did. I sterilised everything in the bathroom, wiped all the door handles and light switches as welll, and he had to use hand gel and separate towels and things. I thinik it was just luck though.

Susceptibility to norovirus is partly genetic. I am susceptible and get it about once a year. I do try to be careful but I can only conclude DH is not susceptible as he's not caught it off me once.

That's interesting theclacks as I caught this off my brother and his wife didn't catch it, or hasn't caught it yet I should say. Yes, using separate bathrooms. Hope that helps.

I get viral tummy bugs once every couple of years. Dp has never caught them off me.

This year ds brought one home from who knows where and passed it on. Dp just got fever and nausea. I got full works. Ds had some weird variant with only occasional vomiting and diarrhoea. But off solids only wanting breast milk. As we were all ill at the sane time I presume we all had the same thing. But expressed differently.

So you may be lucky. They may get it but not as bad. Or not get it at all.

Whenever DH has had it I have (touch wood) escaped despite sharing a bed so it can be done.

DD and I managed to avoid it when my DP got it- she was only 2 weeks old so I went mad with dettol and keeping her away from DP.

I wondered about that too nanu as I've had dreadful colds in the past with really painful sore throat and been so worried that DD would catch it. Then when she inevitably did she only had a mild sniffle!

Yes, using soap and water a lot and washing for at least 15 seconds. I have bleached two bathrooms and the light switches, stair rails and door handles. The house smells reassuringly swimming pooly. The bad news is I am out of bleach! I do have some of that super strength bleach for killing mould and mildew which I might use next when I tackle the kitchen, though after my flurry of activity I am shattered. I'm going back to bed for a bit.

Sounds like you are doing everything you can. You need to buy some more domestos though and just keep at bleaching bathrooms and washing bedding and clothes on a hot wash. Hope you get well soon.

Yes have just washed my bedsheets on 90 degree cycle. DH and DD are still ok though DD looked tired and a bit pale this evening. Keeping fingers crossed.

And DH has just gone out for more bleach!

Bleach bleach bleach, boil wash everything and only eat hot food.

They don't automatically spread that is a myth. We've had several bugs that only one person has had. I think having more than one bathroom helps

this one was such a buggar I really wouldn't want my worst enemy to catch it.

But remember even if they do it won't necessarily affect them as badly.
