AIBU to think there is any way I won't pass norovirus on to the rest of the house?

I have just had the worst bout of norovirus I think I've ever had. Thankfully it was short lived and I'm feeling a lot better. It started on Tuesday night and lasted till about 10:30 yesterday morning. I've been in bed since, utterly shattered but not being sick at all.

Anyway, DD was in bed when I was sick the first time and our bathroom is on a different floor to her. DH slept in the spare room on Tuesday night and last night. So far they're both fine which seems a miracle. I'm washing my hands like a demon and trying not to touch DD too much, though she's only 21 months so it's quite hard as she needs nappy changes (I did one this morning) and can't get her own drinks or anything. I stayed completely away from her and DH all day yesterday while I was actually being sick etc. He had to take emergency leave to watch DD as I was not in fit shape for anything.

So, AIBU to think there is a chance they won't catch it? DD has had tummy bugs before, but this one was such a buggar I really wouldn't want my worst enemy to catch it.

Google Grape Juice. Apparently it is amazing at stopping norovirus developing in the stomach. Maybe worth your DD and DH having some to prevent?

SteviebunsBottrittrundle · 01/09/2016 19:33

Oh thanks mrssecker. Have googled - some people seem to say it's amazing and others not so. I'd say it's worth a go though - it's not like drinking something horrible or dangerous. I just tried to phone DH to pass on the tip as he's at the supermarket now buying bleach, but couldn't get through.

Bleach those germs in the loo Grin

ThePinkOcelot · 01/09/2016 20:18

A few Christmas' ago when there was a norovirus outbreak, DH and dd2 were ill, whereas me and dd1 didn't catch it. I kept waiting to come down with it, but I didn't. So hopefully it should be fine.

OlennasWimple · 01/09/2016 20:23

Agree - wash hands lots with hot water and soap, bleach hard surfaces, wash sheets, use your own towel. I've kept it to myself successfully once before (lucky me!)

HermioneWeasley · 01/09/2016 20:23

Another one here who had it and didn't pass it on. Also obsessively washed hands, the loo, the sink, door handles etc.

I lay on the bathroom floor praying for death to claim me.

Wayfarersonbaby · 01/09/2016 20:29

Some people are immune to it or less susceptible - interestingly research shows that this may be related to blood group!

We had noro at Christmas when DD was 2 - she vommed once on 23 December, then seemed right as rain, eating normally etc. 48 hours later practically to the minute, both DH and I woke up and raced to the bathroom.... poor DD opened her stocking to the sound of us alternately saying "ooh, what did Santa bring?" and then rushing to the loo to retch. Grin Dh and I were sick as dogs for days. Typical!

mirime · 01/09/2016 20:44

You're not being unreasonable, there are obviously precautions you can take but there is probably some luck involved. DH had it a few years ago and I nursed him - he has other health problems that make stomach bugs more dangerous so I can't just leave him to it - and by some miracle I didn't catch it from him or the family members who passed it to him in the first place. No idea how I avoided it.

Waffles80 · 01/09/2016 20:59

At the start of the summer our twins, 2, had it one after the other (with a gap of about three days between). My partner and I didn't get it, but my mum did. She had done a lot of our laundry as we were all on holiday together, but she was fastidious about washing hands etc.

Strange that some of us escaped it - toddlers were all over us all before, during and after it.

Was horrendous. Lasted three days at least and they were all floored by it.

Fingers crossed for your family, it's ghastly, and hope you're on the mend.

booklooker · 01/09/2016 21:12

Have you been diagnosed with Norovirus?

Or is it just what you think you have?

Waffles80 · 01/09/2016 21:32

We weren't diagnosed, as such. It was just what I'd assumed we had. General God-awful stomach bug.

PowerPantsRule · 01/09/2016 21:46

I have a genetic illness and had my genes analysed by 23andme. Just about the only bloody 'good' gene I had was that i am immune to norovirus - 20% of people are.

However I did get a dreadful bout of d and v last year and it went round the whole house like wildfire. It was indistinguishable from noro but the GP told me it was probably rotavirus. So I am sadly not out of the woods.

OhSoggyBiscuit · 01/09/2016 21:50

I caught a nasty 12 hour bug a few years back and only I got it, nobody else. It doesn't always spread.

Portobelly · 01/09/2016 21:59

I've managed to contain it both when I got it and when husband got it, but it felt a bit brutal.

No no no helping the sick person.
Puke in toilet.
Use hand sanitiser.
Use toilet cleaner bleach wipe to wipe seat.
Put lid down
Flush toilet.
Use toilet cleaner bleach wipe to wipe flush
Wash hands properly

And repeat.
Put lid down before every flush.

You're on your own
I'll leave you refreshments and supplies, but I'm not helping you.

booklooker · 01/09/2016 21:59

Unless you have been diagnosed with Norovirus by a qualified person, I don't think it wise to self-diagnose and then tell others that you know what you have had.

BillyDaveysDaughter · 01/09/2016 21:59

I had a variety of it one Christmas (unilateral only) - DH, teenage Sson and his gf in the house, one bathroom. DH slept downstairs, I stayed between bedroom and bathroom and put neat bleach on and around everything I touched including the string to the bathroom light switch. DH did have to force his way into the bathroom when I fainted, but I asked him to just run some water in the bath for me and leave me to sort myself out! And yelled at him to wash his hands in the kitchen and not touch anything in between...

Everyone was okay and I was better exactly 24 hrs after it started. Bastard thing.

bluddleuddleumdum · 01/09/2016 22:00

I had it last year in household with two DSs (plus usual visiting mates of theirs every day). I used one loo and told everyone else to use the other. Washed and bleached as above and no one else caught it. Nasty buggering virus isnt it Sad

booklooker · 01/09/2016 22:01

But Billy, how do you know it was 'Norovirus'?

Waffles80 · 01/09/2016 22:06

Strange response, booklooker.

Nobody purporting to offer medical advice beyond common sense infection control measures. OP not asking for diagnosis or medical advice.

Lorelei76 · 01/09/2016 22:08

well if you think it's noro, the other thing I did - other than bleach everything - was steam clean as well, but I have a steam cleaner thingy.

I live alone though, so basically ordered everyone to stay away until I had been fine for 48 hours. Tbh I'm amazed anyone wanted to come by but I think it's true that some people just won't catch it.

kurlique · 01/09/2016 22:09

I have had norovirus and not passed to the rest of the family... DH pretty much barricaded me into our room and we went through tons of antibac and bleach but it worked!

booklooker · 01/09/2016 22:14

Nobody purporting to offer medical advice beyond common sense infection control measures.

But many people declaring that they had Noro without any diagnosis.

I do not think that is wise.

Basicbrown · 01/09/2016 22:16

But Billy, how do you know it was 'Norovirus'?

Well it's a reasonable assumption as it is the cause of most stomach bugs. I can't see how being 'looked at' by a medical professional would really make the diagnosis more secure tbh.

And don't forget that many of the other bugs (salmonella for example) require similar strategies in an attempt to prevent infection.

Basicbrown · 01/09/2016 22:17

I do not think that is wise.

I had a really severe D & V bug the other Christmas. No one in my immediate family got it and we only have one bathroom. I was also unable to give it a good scrub until I felt better a few days later. My MIL, who was clearly dubious that I'd been ill on Christmas (had to cancel xmas at ours and have it at their's instead) did get it!
So fingers crossed, OP, it is possible and I really hope no one else gets it and you're better soon.
