Where is London?

This is not intended to be a "London bashing thread" so please take question (from northerner) in spirit intended - one of curiosity.

I have been watching the news and an awful update on situation in Penge where a young boy and woman killed. I've never heard of this suburb and couldn't place it on a map - but on looking it seems to be a bit further from what I'd class as "London".

So my AIBU to ask where London starts and finishes?

Have the boundaries expanded? Are there some areas that would be SouthEast a few years ago but are now London?

Whyever not? If you wrote 'flat for sale I the London borough of Whatever' it would be a perfectly honest description.

PigletJohn · 04/09/2016 18:30

You mean like people don't know where "East Bayswater" is?

(Paddington)

Gowgirl · 04/09/2016 18:37

How many people still live in st reathem?

Trills · 04/09/2016 18:43

You wouldn't list your property as London anyway. You'd list your property as SE27 or KT6, since that's a million times more informative than "London" and let people make up their own minds as to whether they thought or wanted it to be in London.

(yes I know those two are not near each other)

EnthusiasmDisturbed · 04/09/2016 18:49

That's to up a price ....

When are properties addresses written as London Borough of ....

I have never seen this

Bromley/Sutton then London then postcode are not recognised addresses

Or on property deeds

CecilyP · 04/09/2016 19:09

Have you never seen this? It was definitely used by estate agents in south London when Lambeth Council was run by the 'loony left'. They would put 'house for sale in London Borough of Wandsworth' or 'London Borough of Croydon'.

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 04/09/2016 19:15

St Reatham Grin

EnthusiasmDisturbed · 04/09/2016 19:16

Sutton tends to be listed as Surrey

And again Sutton, London, Post code isn't recognised

Same with Bromley

And not on property deeds that may change

And I do put London in my address as it is the city I live in (when filling in forms city is often required) my area isn't a town or city

EnthusiasmDisturbed · 04/09/2016 19:29

London Borough of Wandsworth was listed because they paid no poll tax

We lived just around the corner and had to pay and their share it was Maggies golden borough Hmm

Dogcatred · 04/09/2016 19:33

People put correctly London borough of XYZ surely? Why would you not be in London if you are in a London borough?

In practice most of us would distinguish between innr and outer London but both are London whereas Hertfordshire not in a London borough is not London.

CecilyP · 04/09/2016 19:35

I'm going back to rates days but, yes, both Croydon and Wandsworth were cheaper than Lambeth.

lynzeylou · 05/09/2016 07:53

I've always believed it was anything within the M25. Watford, to me, counts as London as its on the tube. I'm from north Scotland though so my idea of London was quite broad and hasn't really changed even though I've been living only 50 miles from central London for the past 15 years. It still seems weird to me when a friend who lives in Greenwich talks about going 'into London' as if she's way out in the sticks.

PumpkinPie9 · 05/09/2016 09:29

I live within the M25 but we pay council tax to and have bins collected by the Surrey borough of Tandridge, plus we don't have a 0208 code and didn't get to vote for the London Mayor, so not London.

Dogcatred · 05/09/2016 12:38

Yes and I am in an outer London borough and my telephone code is 020 8 so in London although obviously not inner London.

Pseudonym99 · 06/09/2016 08:41

Your code isn't 020 8. It is 020.

Dogcatred · 06/09/2016 09:28

That'sd true. I have never written it with no space before the 8. However I am also right that 020 8xxxxx is outer London and 020 7xxxxx is inner London so certainly depending on how you define the word "code" and 7 and 8 do tell people whether you are inner or outer London so that will be a code on some people's definition of code.

Pseudonym99 · 06/09/2016 12:26

020 7 isn't inner London. Outer London codes can also be 020 7, or even 020 0 or 020 3. Same with inner London can also be 020 8. It is just when they changed the dialling code for London 0171 codes migrated to 020 7 and 0181 to 020 8, which is why MOST inner London codes are now 020 7. But the dialling code for London is 020.

How do you pronounce Penge ?
@ocras Why on earth have you resurrected a thread from 2016 to ask a question that has been answered many, many times the first time round?
