Fox wandered into my living room last night

Yelled at it so it retreated (rather slowly). Shut door between house and conservatory ... And 2 mins later saw had wandered back into conservatory, as casual as you like!

AIBU to call for best ways to deter foxes? Do not want him wandering on in!

Live in Richmond, London btw so this is a semi urban fox ....

If it's not shy, it may have toxoplasmosis

Don't drink out of the same glass as the fox. Might be worth putting your underpants on a boil wash if it's been trying them on too.

ChardonnayKnickertonSmythe · 30/08/2016 21:20

I'd lend you a dog or two, but they refuse to have their nap disrupted.

TripTrapTripTrapOverTheBridge · 30/08/2016 21:21

Why didn't you say 'wow' and take a photo?Grin

bibbitybobbityyhat · 30/08/2016 21:22

EttaJ - don't call someone an idiot because urban foxes are becoming a problem! Infact, don't call someone an idiot at all!

They are scavenging flea and mange ridden vermin in London. We haven't invaded "their" territory at all, they have invaded ours!

Longdistance · 30/08/2016 21:23

Shoot the fox. I hear fur's so 2016 Grin

EttaJ · 30/08/2016 21:23

I apologize bouquet I misread your name on it . But don't be ridiculous, I am certainly not hysterical about anything. I am however bemused by such a bunch of fucking whiners . It's a fox not a tiger. Get a grip. They're beautiful creatures. All this hatred is so unnecessary.

AGreatBigWorld · 30/08/2016 21:26

My sister lives with my aunt in Sarf London. The foxes are very tame and have actually crapped on my aunts car in the past!
My sister took some barbed wire back from here to put round the top of the wall to keep them out. To cover herself my aunt rang the council to check and was told she couldn't put it up in case case burglar hurt himself climbing over the wall!! Hmm Shock

ChardonnayKnickertonSmythe · 30/08/2016 21:32

Barbed wire is barbarian TBF.

It can cut cats and squirrels and other animals.

NantucketNightbird · 30/08/2016 21:33

I feed a fox and I've got photos of him eating right next to my cats! My mother also feeds a fox every night he comes for his dinner, she's getting close to touching him. We Live in Pembrokeshire (I'm a complete fox loving vegan and protest against the hunt).

NinjaLeprechaun · 30/08/2016 21:35

It could be worse - my sister had a skunk wander into her living room once. (She lives in California.) Dog tried to help relocate said skunk, and they had to throw away some very expensive rugs and possibly the dog as a result.

RockinHippy · 30/08/2016 21:37

I'm another with Joffrey

I befriended a Fox where I used to live & he was really lovely, he was a regular visitor for years, brought his vixen & Cubs along a few times too. I was very sad when he died - he came to me when he was dying tooSad

He never came into my house though - my old Maine Cat would have none of that, she happily shared a bowl of food outside with him though, but she soon changed her attitude if he dare get too close to the door Grin

bibbitybobbityyhat · 30/08/2016 21:38

They are beautiful creatures but then so are grizzly bears. Just because a creature is beautiful doesn't mean it should be welcomed into densely populated areas.

roasted · 30/08/2016 21:39

London foxes are quite tame, if you had one in your house, I don't imagine it would be hard to chase out. But why wasn't the door shut? Foxes aside, I would have it shut and locked to stop burglars from getting in...

AndDontCallMeShirley · 30/08/2016 21:42

Shove it in the chest freezer in the garage with a view to stuff it.

Don't let Jackie see it, put it in the back of Vals car if you have to and for gods sake watch out for Wilson Grin

EttaJ · 30/08/2016 21:45

bibity I wondered how long until someone posted a link to that BS story.

imip · 30/08/2016 21:45

On a hot day last week in sweltering East London, around 7pm, dh and I had front door open on our small semi letting the breeze and just pulling weeds out of our tiny front garden (long -8m? - but thin) turned around and a fox is standing at the entrance of out front door. Seemed pretty brazen and moved aside big wouldn't move away. Jesus, I'd hate to have imagined the calamity of one of my 4 dcs had seen it!

I'm used to foxes around these parts but that was close!!! Door was open because it was stupidly hot!!!

ABloodyDifficultWoman · 30/08/2016 21:50

Beware those feeling the urge to touch a fox. They STINK! And it's an oily stink so you'll have trouble getting it off your skin!

Human hair is a good deterrant or so I'm told - ask local hairdresser for sweepings and bag it up in old tights - hang all over the garden.

They'll probably take it to play football and then shit on them!

AlpacaPicnic · 30/08/2016 21:52

After this little intruder kept stealing food we replaced our back door with a stable door so we could have fresh air without provinding an all-you-can-eat buffet for the local wildlife!

FanDabbyFloozy · 30/08/2016 21:54

I'm perplexed at the comments to keep the door shut. It was well into the 20s C today in London - my car said 25 at one point.

I had all my windows and doors open to get a breeze.

Urban foxes in London are pests - they attack cats, small animals (rabbits), pull apart bins, screech all night. These are a world apart from their cute, shy country cousins, I can assure you.

ChardonnayKnickertonSmythe · 30/08/2016 21:58

Urban foxes are a nuisance but that doesn't warrant the use of barbed wire.

ABloodyDifficultWoman · 30/08/2016 22:00

Alpaca - what a little darling!

YouTheCat · 30/08/2016 22:02

We have a foxy visitor in the back garden. I don't feed it. I love that it visits and don't care that it craps as it keeps next-door-but-one's mutt out of our garden.

I'd never sit with my doors open, no matter how hot it was. Fine, a little fox wanders in. Not so fine, a large human wanders in. There were opportunistic burglars round here not so long ago - trying people's doors and just going in and nicking what they could very quickly.

SalemSaberhagen · 30/08/2016 22:03

Bagging up other people's unwanted hair and depositing it across your garden in old tights is the best thing I've ever read on Mumsnet.
