Last night I was forced to invited out with some people from work and it transpires one of my distant colleagues knows one of my good mum friends. When I was explaining how I knew this friend she said;
"Oh you're the one with hundreds of plug ins that give x the almighty headaches....hahahaha" Hmm

She spoke like it was some in joke but this is all new to me! I'm livid. I know it's not crime of the century to have plug ins but I'm angered at the fact she's obviously talking about me to others. Should I let on I know or secretly seethe or get rid of plug ins?? more plug ins and turn them up when she comes Angry

Semi, would you really speak to somebody like that?

That is amazingly rude and bitchy surely.

No one knows how the comments were made. Quite likely a comment in passing mentioning how the plug-ins give her headaches e.g. at Lavender's house, rather than slagging Lavender off press, just using it as an example.

I can't imagine ever talking to anyone like that for any reason, and if someone spoke to me like that I'd avoid ever seeing them again, ever. It's so rude and hurtful.

gingerboy1912 · 31/08/2016 07:52

Your good friend who talked about her dislike of plug ins may not of been bitching about you but may of just mentioned that she didn't like them but it was the newly aquatinted person who made it sound bad.

But plug ins are vile migraine inducing things and your poor dog probably can't smell anything else but them.

Mycraneisfixed · 31/08/2016 07:53

Plug ins are nasty and unnecessary and so is the friend.

Oliversmumsarmy · 31/08/2016 07:53

Don't air freshener so cause depression.

When I walk into a room I want to smell cleanliness. I use a vaporetto and steam clean everyday. i have a multitude of cats and am always aware of smells. Sofa gets a Hoover with the pet hair remover and steam cleaned daily.

TheFairyCaravan · 31/08/2016 08:01

I can't stand plug-ins. All scented candles, regardless of where they come from or how expensive they are give me a migraine, as do most reed diffusers. None of them are necessary in a clean house.

Sailingtoanisland · 31/08/2016 08:13

Plugins give a horrible migraine, I am unable to be in a room or house where they are used.

"This friend had asked me to stop wearing perfume many moons ago as it affected her which I did but she never mentioned my plug ins and she's here all the friggin time ."

This could be me.

I don't get why peole use air fresheners but each to their own. I prefer opening the windows a lot. If I have cooking smell lingering, I wash the floors with nice smelling stuff that usually keeps bad smells at bay.

They put all sorts of horrible chemicals in air fresheners which I am unable to breathe in without feeling ill.

Ilovenannyplum · 31/08/2016 08:26

I like plug ins Grin

MLGs · 31/08/2016 08:44

I don't like plug ins. But friend was rude to talk about you behind your back, and work colleague was staggeringly stupid to tell you about it!

MLGs · 31/08/2016 08:46

I like a reed diffuser although i don't have them most of the time.

Swishtails · 31/08/2016 08:52

Why anyone would have these in their home is beyond me.

I'm also a lover of Zoflora and naice reed diffusers. Much better than cheap shit plug ins.

ZippyNeedsFeeding · 31/08/2016 09:12

I'm very lazy, so in the Winter I just put a few drops of lemon oil on the mantelpiece in the living room and the heat from the fire spreads a lovely fresh smell through most of the house. We have a tile fireplace though, I wouldn't do it with wood or marble. For the bathroom, I keep a little ceramic pot (left over from Christmas stilton) and half fill it with hot water then add lemon (or other) oil and it even gets rid of the smells from having five males and only one toilet in the house!

I can't use any kind of sprays because they make me wheeze. I'm not sure about plug ins, because I don't know anyone who uses them. It isn't nice to feel that people have been talking about you behind your back though, and I think I would be a bit offended. If you know your friend is coming it might be a nice gesture to unplug the plug ins before she arrives though.

kali110 · 31/08/2016 09:37

Op it's your house, do what you want.
Friends do things in their houses that I hate, but strangely i've never bitched about it Confused
I don't mind the plug in, think some of them are nice! ( they've never brought on a migraine or set offmy asthma, so everyone is different!)

SemiNormal · 31/08/2016 11:15

Semi you'd be an ex friend if you spoke to me like that - and if someone slagged off my home to someone else they'd be an ex friend too. If the plug ins are such a huge deal to her, which they obviously are to be moaning about it to someone else, then why not tell OP instead of other people. Seems completely absurd to me.

traciehunter · 31/08/2016 17:43

Plug ins are known carcinogenic, better to try and find a diffuser with natural oils if you can ;)

MrsMimmy · 31/08/2016 20:20

Scentsy wax melts for me! And an air purifier (we have a bird, it helps with the dust!)

Tapandgo · 31/08/2016 21:26

Ditch the plug ins and the friend

Thisisnotreallymyname · 31/08/2016 21:30

A little dab of lavender oil on a make up pad, hidden in room, gives gorgeous spa smell.

HeCantBeSerious · 31/08/2016 21:36

Bleugh. Can't bear lavender in any form. Smells like old lady bath salts.

PuntCuffin · 31/08/2016 21:49

Another one here who gets banging headaches and nausea from plug ins. And perfumes.

When DH and I first met he used to try to mask the smell of bachelor pad before I visited with them and I used to run round turning them off and told him to just clean more often and open windows. Problem solved. But then he took to buying me duty free perfumes, except I could never wear them.

Seems like there are quite a lot of people who are affected like this.

DelicatePreciousThing1 · 31/08/2016 21:54

What a name: a plug-in. The only thing that should go in a socket is a normal plug. Have never used one nor reed diffusers which are horrible too. I hate the smell of artificial.

KingJoffreyLikesJaffaCakes · 31/08/2016 22:00

Perfume is grim.

Always smells of industrial cleaners to me. Like when a toilet has been professionally cleaned.

Makes me cough badly.

MumsTheWordYouKnow · 31/08/2016 22:04

Sounds like a thoughtless comment, but as usual escalated out of proportion. I'm sure they didn't mean anything by it. Plugins can be horrible. I have a couple, but very selective about fragrance and only put them on for a short time occasionally.

chipsandgin · 31/08/2016 22:06

Bleurrrgh to plug ins - horrible chemicals and give me a massive headache and or breathing problems (neither of which I suffer with normally). I just don't get it - they make houses smell like a mini-cab office.

However, really not great of 'friend' to have broadcast this - but she might just have mentioned it to someone she presumed to be totally unconnected during conversation. Maybe bring it up in what will be a very awkward conversation - but she will feel mortified and probably be more careful in future!

SophieofShepherdsBush · 31/08/2016 22:06

I find it unbelievable that while many people may regard organic food as a good thing, or avoid breathing in pollution from vehicles, or protect their kids from dangerous chemicals or passive smoking but they are quite happy to spray nasty carcinogenic chemicals around their homes for their kids to breathe in.
Ditch the plug ins for your own health!

FontSnob · 31/08/2016 22:13

Good choice to get rid of the smelly bastard headache inducing things.
