Last night I was forced to invited out with some people from work and it transpires one of my distant colleagues knows one of my good mum friends. When I was explaining how I knew this friend she said;
"Oh you're the one with hundreds of plug ins that give x the almighty headaches....hahahaha" Hmm

She spoke like it was some in joke but this is all new to me! I'm livid. I know it's not crime of the century to have plug ins but I'm angered at the fact she's obviously talking about me to others. Should I let on I know or secretly seethe or get rid of plug ins?? more plug ins and turn them up when she comes Angry

I like plug ins.

Who made the comment to your distant colleague? Your mum or your mums friend. Has this mums friend been to your house?

I do agree they have a very dull life if this is all they can talk about. Now pathetic of them.

helpimitchy · 30/08/2016 17:44

These chemical air polluters fresheners contain carcinogens and neurotoxins and can cause multiple health issues in people who are sensitive to them.

They work by anaesthetising the smell receptors which basically means that you can't even smell them after a few hours.

They use them in my workplace - industrial strength ones - which has cause me to have sinus damage, headaches, nausea and dizziness. My nose was bleeding in the shower yesterday due to the sinus irritation that I'm currently having. I'm in constant pain and discomfort.

These air polluters are no joke to many people. They're dangerous and will probably be banned in a few years. Open windows and clean with soap and water to get rid of smells.

StarOnTheTree · 30/08/2016 17:44

I hate any type of artificial air freshener and I get migrainy just walking past lush. I could never go onside one Shock

I'm actually feeling a bit nauseous just thinking about car air fresheners!

Your friend wasn't talking negatively about you OP. It probably just came up in conversation and she was staying a fact. Your plug ins probably affect other friends who visit your house too!

Sara107 · 30/08/2016 17:50

very tactless of this woman to mention it like that - you don't really admit to discussing other people behind their backs. But those air fresheners give off hideous chemicals and I find they make me a bit unwell. Dh had one in his car when I met him and it gave me terrible car sickness. Ditch the plu-ins and use something else instead - lavender oil on the radiator or something.

Donthateprocreate · 30/08/2016 17:53

I love my plug ins haah!

Chickoletta · 30/08/2016 17:57

I hate plug ins too but this woman sounds like a complete bitch.

I like White Company reed diffusers and sprays to hide the doggy smell and also burn their candles in the evenings. Quite pricey but get them as pressies as everyone knows I love them.

I would personally call out your 'friend' on this one but I am a fairly confrontational cow!

Koan · 30/08/2016 18:03

Another one who gets headaches from them and I'm not prone to headaches generally.

YANBU to feel offended by the comment imo tho. Reminds me of being at the large party of a couple we'd known right since we got together. Her SIL, by way of conversation, asked if I was still doing 'all my courses?'This could only have come from one source and it bothered me but on reflection I shouldn't have been too surprised given how this friend spoke about other women when we were together. It gave me the jolt I needed tbh and we stopped seeing them.

MerchantofVenice · 30/08/2016 18:05

Lots of sneering on this thread, as usual...

I'm sure OP's house is perfectly clean; she just has a fondness for particular fragrances!

Those of you recommending reed diffusers as somehow inherently superior... err have you read the warnings on those things? ? They are poison!

It's not the weird to want to disguise dog smell... Dogs do smell, you know. Those of you who think they don't have obviously grown immune to your own smelly homes. (See - it's annoying when people make assumptions about your levels of hygiene/smelliness.)

HeCantBeSerious · 30/08/2016 18:06

Recently stayed in a relative's studio flat.

She had plug ins in practically every socket, smelly candles, scent diffusers, reed diffusers, electric wax melter things. I counted 33 different things all pumping out noxious fucking fumes in an area less than 20ft x 20ft. Fuck knows what that shit is doing to her DNA!

Gmbk · 30/08/2016 18:07

Room spray and air freshener?

Your house would be an interesting concoction of smells.

WalrusGumboot · 30/08/2016 18:08

I'm just looking online at all the lovely options for aromatherapy diffusers OP. I'm jealous that you get to choose one! I bought a cheapie for hypnobirthing but I'd love some of the ones I've just seen.

Bergamot is a gorgeous scent, as is lavender. Go to your local pharmacy and have a good sniff of all the choices. Lovely!

kaelea · 30/08/2016 18:09

Last I heard plug in's are toxic to pets, whether there is any truth to that I have no idea, but I binned mine (plug ins not pets) to be on the safe side.

retainertrainer · 30/08/2016 18:12

Just wanted to add that TK Maxx do lovely aromatherapy reed diffusers at really good prices,I've got a cucumber and mint one on the go at the moment-it smells lovely and contains only essential oils.

HeCantBeSerious · 30/08/2016 18:18

It's been shown that most of these smelly room things are toxic to humans as well, hasn't it?

Cucumber doesn't contain oil, does it?

Queenbean · 30/08/2016 18:23

It's not the weird to want to disguise dog smell... Dogs do smell, you know

Well the difference is I want to clear the dog smell out by opening windows and keeping my dog clean, rather than spraying chemicals to cover up the smell.

I'd rather be able to smell the dog than know I was breathing in both the dog smell and the migraine inducing stink that had been sprayed around.

MewlingQuim · 30/08/2016 18:24

Ugh, I feel sick just thinking about plug ins.

Those reed diffusers are no better. The office staff put one in the corridor at work and it reeks. I often hide it in the stairwell.

I had to put a note up at work asking people who wear perfume not to borrow my lab coat because the smell gave me such a headache.

I light incense each evening.

Plug ins are gross.

dowhatnow · 30/08/2016 18:38

Rituals reed diffuser - spring gardens is my favourite.

Gorgeous smell that actually lasts. Pricey though at £24ish

MerchantofVenice · 30/08/2016 18:40

Fair enough, Queenbean. Not saying you shouldn't have your preferences!

I would point out that clean dogs also smell. It's the smell of dog, not dirt.

Mynestisfullofempty · 30/08/2016 18:42

Can you imagine what your plugins are like for your dog whose sense of smell (depending on breed) is 1 thousand to 10 million times better than humans? Source here It must be appalling for the dog.
