Last night I was forced to invited out with some people from work and it transpires one of my distant colleagues knows one of my good mum friends. When I was explaining how I knew this friend she said;
"Oh you're the one with hundreds of plug ins that give x the almighty headaches....hahahaha" Hmm

She spoke like it was some in joke but this is all new to me! I'm livid. I know it's not crime of the century to have plug ins but I'm angered at the fact she's obviously talking about me to others. Should I let on I know or secretly seethe or get rid of plug ins?? more plug ins and turn them up when she comes Angry

This friend had asked me to stop wearing perfume many moons ago as it affected her which I did but she never mentioned my plug ins and she's here all the friggin time .

There are a lot of plug in haters here. Wink

A plug in thingy for aromatherapy oils. You can then choose or event mix your oils to get the room smelling nice. Plus you don't get the fake vanilla tang stuck in your nostrils all day, or a headache from the cheap perfume.

curlywillow · 30/08/2016 16:41

They can make some people feel really sick. DH can't be in a room with them. I now have a couple of really good scented candles which actually fragrance the room even without being lit. I put them on for an hour in the evening. Reed diffusers for the bathrooms.

I'd assume that you've probably gone way over the top with the plug in use if your mum has complained to a friend about how bad it is who has then passed it on to another friend.

lavenderlooselips · 30/08/2016 16:41

Please don't tell me that I shouldn't be using air freshener sprays either .......

So what do people use for nice smells.

I clean, try not to fart and accept owning a dog sometimes means a smell. Have an emergency bottle of Febreeze when opening a window doesn't freshen things up.

ParadiseCity · 30/08/2016 16:43

If I had a friend whose plug ins were a problem I would tell HER not bitch about it behind her back.

lavenderlooselips · 30/08/2016 16:43

Just to clarify its not my mum complaining , it a friend of mine who is a mum. My own mother has taught me this obviously filthy addiction to plug ins. Wink

SolomanDaisy · 30/08/2016 16:44

I have a friend who uses them and they give me a headache too. I have mentioned this to people, but not bitching. More like, someone has mentioned plug ins and I've said, 'oh. X uses them and they really give me a headache'. So don't be offended!

JenLindleyShitMom · 30/08/2016 16:46

I'm angered at the fact she's obviously talking about me to others

Other people will be talking about you all the time and you haven't a clue, you will never know most of what others say about you. Much of it wont be complimentary.

I suggest you either decide not to care or prepare to spend your life very angry.

Out of curiosity, don't you ever talk about others?

Puddington · 30/08/2016 16:48

I'd never heard of them giving people headaches before this thread! I have one but I never use it really, I prefer Yankee Candle melts (the addiction...) and some reed diffusers from Next.

YANBU though since it was a rude and random thing to say tbh!

RiverTam · 30/08/2016 16:48

I have to say, I struggle with artificial chemically smells like plug ins and air fresheners, frankly farts and dog would be better (can't you open a window?). So if you had loads I may well mention it in conversation as it's something that would mean I'd find it hard to be in your house for any length of time. Sorry.

RiverTam · 30/08/2016 16:49

Scented candles are awful!!!

LunaLoveg00d · 30/08/2016 16:49

Plug in air freshners do not give "nice smells", they give chemical smells which make me wheeze and give me a headache. Horrid things.

I like reed diffusers, or scented candles.

specialsubject · 30/08/2016 16:49

emperors new clothes: plug-ins do reek, same as scented candles, and are usually the sign of a smelly house so the combination is truly appalling. But if you want to live in a reeking house, that's your privilege.

the person should have thought before commenting though!

ParanoidGynodroid · 30/08/2016 16:50

I can't stand chemical fake smells either (and do you know how horrific they are for the environment? You've seen that dead fish symbol on the packaging?)
However, your air freshening choices are not the issue here. You're upset because your good friend has been having a swipe at you behind your back. But is it really that bad? She may just have said, because scented candles or reed diffusers or something were being discussed, "Oh my lovely friend Lavender uses those plug in things. They give me such a headache".
What I mean is, she was critical of plug-ins rather than you personally. I see no need to ditch her as was suggested by others.

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 30/08/2016 16:51

Plugins and air fresheners are horrendous sorry. As a PP said they just that you have a naturally smelly house.

I'd recommend.you get rid of the dog and the DP.

amusedbush · 30/08/2016 16:51

I can't stand plug ins, or aerosol air freshener for that matter. They both make me feel queasy and give me a headache. They don't smell nice at all either, they're so chemically and sickly.

DoItTooJulia · 30/08/2016 16:51

Ugh, I'm with the plug-in haterz.

YY to an aromatherapy diffuser. Buy pure essential oils and use those. Bergamot is nice and zesty and uplifting. The flowery ones can be a bit zoflora-esque.

WalrusGumboot · 30/08/2016 16:52

Gawd please not FEBREEZE! Hideous stuff. Hate the ones that spray out on a timer as well. Especially if you're standing right near it and practically drink the stuff. Ugh!

You need an aromatherapy diffuser OP. Much more civilised.

IceBeing · 30/08/2016 16:53

you could always follow your user name and apply some lavender to your upper lip...like a little nice smelling moustache....

IceBeing · 30/08/2016 16:54

you could use either double sided sticky tape...or pritt stick I guess...

StarlingMurmuration · 30/08/2016 16:55

I hate plug-ins, they give me a headache. But both your mum friend and the other woman were rude.

SpinningTotem · 30/08/2016 16:55

I think it's hurtful that you had to find out that way, but I'll be honest that I can't stand air fresheners either. They don't give me a headache but I find the smell too synthetic and sort of smothery (real word?).

I think oil burners are quite nice for fresh smells (can mix whatever oils you want), but difficult to have around if you have little ones or pets that jump up.

howabout · 30/08/2016 16:57

Get rid of the plug ins and ask your friend why she didn't mention they were giving her headaches. They give me migraines to the point of making me throw up.

SquinkiesRule · 30/08/2016 16:57

God I hate those plug ins too, they give me a migraine.
We clean, open windows and have the emergency febreeze on hand like one of the other posters. Reed diffusers can be nice I used to have a vanilla one. I have some essential oils too and a few drops can be lovely.
