Last night I was forced to invited out with some people from work and it transpires one of my distant colleagues knows one of my good mum friends. When I was explaining how I knew this friend she said;
"Oh you're the one with hundreds of plug ins that give x the almighty headaches....hahahaha" Hmm

She spoke like it was some in joke but this is all new to me! I'm livid. I know it's not crime of the century to have plug ins but I'm angered at the fact she's obviously talking about me to others. Should I let on I know or secretly seethe or get rid of plug ins?? more plug ins and turn them up when she comes Angry

I recommend any oil rose based. I hate sandalwood, too strong, also hate any patchouli or incense type ones. I just put 3-4 drops in and it puffs out this steam but it is only just discernible and not strong.

teablanket · 30/08/2016 17:22

Ooh, I love a good plug-in. Particularly late in the year, when they bring out the artificial festive-funk scents. "Spiced apple" never truly smells like spiced apple, but I'm a fan anyway.

mouldycheesefan · 30/08/2016 17:23

I abhor the stink of dog so well done for trying to reduce that but yes plug ins are awful.
Reed diffusers are much nicer.
Shampoo the dog
Open the windows
Fresh flowers

lavenderlooselips · 30/08/2016 17:23

Oh god tea blanket, I love the spiced apple. I don't think I'll cope without a whiff of that.

Plug ins are awful. No wonder your friend gets headaches

lavenderlooselips · 30/08/2016 17:25

mouldy, I like to think I do all that adequately. I've just become so used to having a smell on top of all that too. I love perfume too. Maybe I need to reeducate myself.....I do after all get a bit headachey myself but just assumed it was because of my screaming brats kids.

Plug ins give me baaaaaaad headaches. Get rid! Light a nice candle and open the windows.

lavenderlooselips · 30/08/2016 17:29

Okay. I'll do it. I'll throw them out. Confused

sophiestew · 30/08/2016 17:29

Wait - back up a bit....your friend asked you not to wear perfume? What a fucking liberty!!

How many plug ins have you got on the go? I have one in a big 4 bed house and I only use it if I really need to, for maybe a couple of hours.

I prefer candles but am not very good at remembering to blow them out Blush It was very shit stirry of the mutual "friend" to tell you what she said.

mouldycheesefan · 30/08/2016 17:29

If you like a perfume in the air try some good quality reed diffusers or a fragranced candle but a quality one not Yankee . Less is more.
White company ones are nice and John Lewis and national trust both do some reasonably priced ones.

SvalbardianPenguin · 30/08/2016 17:30

They are a big fire risk as well as polluting the air.

ILostItInTheEarlyNineties · 30/08/2016 17:30

Nothing wrong with a bit of Zoflora, OP Smile.
I actually think with a housefull of kids and dogs, candles are a bad idea.

twofingerstoGideon · 30/08/2016 17:31

Cost a flipping fortune but hide wet dog and dh's farts.

My neighbour has a smelly dog and farty husband. Her house smells of dog, farts and chemical air freshener. Horrid.

lavenderlooselips · 30/08/2016 17:32

What about room spray. Can I still use room spray people. Help me here.

Shockers · 30/08/2016 17:36

I'd take the whiff of a cleanish pooch (that's not yours mother- he needs a bath!) over a plug in anyday.

BerylStreep · 30/08/2016 17:36

I can't stand them either - they give me a blinding headache and make me want to throw up. Same with cars with air fresheners, especially when mixed with stale cigarette smoke - I really have to concentrate on not vomiting.

The fact that your friend asked if you mind not wearing perfume around her suggests that either she is extremely sensitive (perfume makes me sneeze) or you are completely over the top with your smellies, or a combination of both. You could well have become desensitised to their smell and become 'nose-blind'.

Would you consider trying without them for a while to see if you can live without them? They really are awful for your health.

In terms of your friend, I would mention to her that this mutual acquaintance had said about it, and let her know you had't realised what an effect they were having on her. You could arrange to meet elsewhere if you really don't want to give up the plug-ins.

How did you feel when she asked you not to wear perfume? Did she explain it nicely? Did you feel got at? It would be a shame to lose a good friendship over this.

Grilledaubergines · 30/08/2016 17:37

Mmmmmm stick with the Zola OP. Lovely stuff.

ItShouldHaveBeenJess · 30/08/2016 17:39

I was hoping that 'plug-ins' referred to vibrators.

But no.

Opens a window.

mouldycheesefan · 30/08/2016 17:39

Say to mutual friend, " gosh what is X like with her house comments! First my plug ins and now what she has said about your house! Then walk away. Leave her to wonder.

mouldycheesefan · 30/08/2016 17:41

No room spray! Your house must be a headache inducing nightmare with all these competing artificial smells.

RiverTam · 30/08/2016 17:41

Windows!!! Open your windows, OP!!! Do it!
