It's her job to act in the best interest of our country.

We NEED access to the single market and won't get that without free movement of people.

The peace process in N Ireland will be in jeopardy if we erect a border between them and Ireland. It's too high a price to pay.

The referendum was advisory so PM May and the majority of MPs who were pro-remain need to say 'thanks for the advice but we can't deliver what you wanted without wrecking our country so we're staying'

I did! Autocorrect gets me so cross!

Topseyt · 29/08/2016 10:24

My auto-correct is twatty and has upstaged me a few times.

HoneyDragon · 29/08/2016 10:26

Why is this in AIBU? If you want a discussion on this their are plenty already to read, quite interesting ones.

RiverTam · 29/08/2016 10:29

I'm sure there's nothing undemocratic about ignoring the result, it's a consultation. Haven't Ireland had the same referendum, twice now, and ignored the result both times? Someone has.

DailyMailEthicalFail · 29/08/2016 10:34

In Scotland, we had a Referendum.
Remain (in the UK) won.
The SNP is about to launch a 2nd Referendum push.
The Scottish Economy has a £15BILLION black hole (15 billion reasons why it was right not to gamble on a 'Leave' vote.)

I DO live in Scotland and we don't need another hugely divisive and expensive Referendum, thanks!

If the Scottish Govt can ignore a democratic vote, so can TM.

But, just as it suits her to cry democracy, it suits SNP to cry 'freedom'.

cdtaylornats · 29/08/2016 10:35

DoNotBlame - regardless of what happened in the EU vote Sturgeon would be whining on about a new referendum. It wont happen because she would lose.

Topseyt · 29/08/2016 10:35

I think Ireland's referendum was about ratifying (or not) the Lisbon Treaty, not on in/out EU membership. They accepted it narrowly on a second referendum, having rejected it first time around.

ClashCityRocker · 29/08/2016 10:36

Yes, there's plenty of precedent for referendum results being ignored.

Dunno, legally it was only advisory but as everyone said at the time they would follow the result (possibly because they thought it would be remain) not do so, whilst retaining your position, would be very tricky.

I wish to god they'd said beforehand we will have a referendum, see what people say and go from there. I think the fact that it was fairly close at 52% would be a reasonable basis for saying that it's not a big enough mandate to do something so drastic.

butterfliesandzebras · 29/08/2016 10:38

There are several people I know who apparently think brexit has already happened (I.e. complaining vociferously on social media whenever anyone publishes stats on Europe that include the UK, calling June 23 'our independence day' and describing it as 'when we left Europe').

I do privately wonder if some of them would notice if it quietly got put off and put off and never actually happened....

But I can't see May (or any politician) standing up and declaring it won't happen.

missyB1 · 29/08/2016 10:39

personally I just wish Theresa May would sod off and take the rest of her government with her.

On the subject of Brexit I will be surprised if it ever actually happens.

celeste83 · 29/08/2016 10:40

SNP threatening a 2nd referendum is all hot air though. Firstly, oil prices has dropped through the floor so Soctland would have a lot less revenue that previously, and secondly Scotland would find it difficult to enter the EU as nations like Spain would veto them as it would encourage separatists in Catalunya to declare independence from Spain.

Yes. It's taken me ages to work out WHY she bangs on about another IndyRef when there is SUCH a good chance they'd lose (again...).

All I can think is that the IndyFroth keeps folk from concentrating on the £15bn black hole, the state of the Scottish Education system, and the Scottish NHS? (all the devolved stuff that cant be blamed entirely on Westminster?)

EssentialHummus · 29/08/2016 10:42

EU national here, so I'd have voted Remain had I been eligible to vote.

We shouldn't have had a referendum.

Having decided to have a referendum, it should have had the words "CAUTION: ADVISORY ONLY" written above it, and/or some sort of threshold for either turnout or %.

I've no idea how May feels personally, but I imagine she wants to avoid triggering A50 in a way that leads to further weakening of the pound, losing the City's "passporting" rights, large-scale job losses. From reading a lot around this issue, I don't see any suggestion of how this might happen. I imagine they're trying to cook something up at the moment.

Ironically, short term I expect - and early info available suggests - that we'll have more EU migrants, who want to come in before the shutters come down.

So a great result all round eh?

DailyMailEthicalFail · 29/08/2016 10:42

And, is there a parallel with UK / Europe?

ie, if / when we Brexit, we can no longer 'Blame Brussels' for everything???

IAmNotTheMessiah · 29/08/2016 10:42

My hope is that she's put Boris, Davis, Fox et al in charge of coming up with a Brexit strategy. Given that that lot wouldn't be able to come up with a strategy for putting their trousers on in the morning, it's reasonable to assume that whatever mess they produce will be a pile of steaming Tottenham. At this point May can turn around and state that Brexit is unworkable and we have to stay in.

I voted leave, and want to leave!

cardibach · 29/08/2016 10:53

For what reasons, ThroughThickandThin? Given that everything The Leave campaign said has turned out to be less than accurate? What are you hoping for after we leave?

oblada · 29/08/2016 10:53

Agreed. EU national here. The referendum was a farce and there is no democratic mandate. The results were close and people who voted leave voted for such different reasons (some no other than a protest meaningless vote) that the argument "we have the follow the will of the people" simply does not stand for very long...
But like others can't see May actually destroying her political career for the good of the country... Let's see what compromise they can think of...

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 29/08/2016 10:54

That we avoid the huge economic disaster the eu is heading for.

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 29/08/2016 11:02

We'll see.

WrongTrouser · 29/08/2016 11:03

Given that everything The Leave campaign said has turned out to be less than accurate? What are you hoping for after we leave?

Many people who voted leave did not do so because of the Leave campaign. If you look at Lord Ashcroft's poll, many voters (either way) had made their decision before the campaign. In my view many leave voters voted leave inspite of not because of the Leave campaign.

WrongTrouser · 29/08/2016 11:04
