To detest FAMILY day out, FAMILY meal, FAMILY fun!

Why do some people use the word "Family" to describe everyday activities?

I come across it on MN, Facebook and often irl.

I mean, the kind of families who do everything together anyway.

"Oh, we had a great family holiday". You never go on holiday separately and haven't for fifteen years.

"I made a really tasty pasta bake. #familymealtimes." As opposed to any other type of meal you ever have.

"We enjoy family day outs at the local arboretum."

Etc, etc.

Don't get me started on "Quality time".

I'm going to have some quality family time now, mumsnetting.

Too bad for some of you.

Mycraneisfixed · 29/08/2016 03:22

I cringe when I see people (usually women) posting messages to their partners on FB. Why ffs? Just tell him IRL how wonderful you think he is. No-one else gives a toss.

Family days are a rarity in my home. Usually DP is working so it's just me and DD.

When he's off and we actually get to go out somewhere, I love the fact we can have a FAMILY day out.

Even better when my parents/ his mum can come along!

Haha. A lot if you #haters, OP included, sounds like a miserable ass. Ripping into someone else because they are happy and feel blessed.

Some people do it. You don't have to like it. Get a grip and move on!

MrsGuyOfGisbo · 29/08/2016 04:22

Love love love this thread!

twirlywoo69 · 29/08/2016 07:31

mycraneisfixed, the only couple I know who have conversations on fb genuinely despise each other and never sit in the same room #lovemyhubby

CradleCrapNap · 29/08/2016 08:16

Sorry if it's been said because I have my RTFT but people who post lovey dovey 'family' shit about people who aren't even on Facebook. Whether it's their baby/dog etc. Just SAY IT TO THEIR FACE and stop trying to get a reaction from the rest of us.
Also someone I know who just had her second baby just posted a 'picture of us as a complete family'! I'm sure your first born will love to know you weren't complete until her sister was born.

I hate it too although I also use it sometimes. Blush

I'm a prolific FB user and share photos frequently - but phrases like familam/holibobs etc and motivational/twee hashtags make my teeth itch. Just reviewed my holiday photos and should amend them after this thread- pic of DDs in pool with a comment "loving the pool here". Should have hashtagged waterbabies/mylittlemermaids. Pic of some wolves in an animal park with the post "gorgeous creatures, well worth visiting this place" - missed the opportunity to hashtag familydayout/twilight/teamjacob/dancingwithwolves.

futurelotterywinner · 29/08/2016 09:38

For all those getting their knickers in a knot about this post somehow begrudging them a family day out....it's not!
It's not even moaning about people sharing family pics on social media.
The OP was sinply sharing how cringeworthy she finds people needing to somehow qualify this family time by telling everyone in Facebook that they are having family time!
#juststopit #getmeasickbowl
Ps if you want to use hashtags to tell everyone about your family time then carry on, this is simply other people's viewpoint on it!

( how come I missed myself out?)

EddieStobbart · 29/08/2016 11:01

I'm not on Facebook - I'm abit shit at being "in the moment" anyway (Mumsnet is a great place to hide from "the moment" I find) so I don't think it would be healthy for me.

The increased popularity of selfies has been reported to be driving a boom in cosmetic sales with people wanting to be "photo ready" at all times. No good for me #wentforaruntwohoursagoandnotwashedyet #pitsarehumming

Galdos · 29/08/2016 11:57

Getting back to the original post ... I thought calling something 'Family Something' (holiday, day out, meal) meant it was really for the kids' benefit and I have to grin and bear it. OK when they're really young and the main task every day is to wear them out before I am worn out, but otherwise eugh! If I'm on holiday I'd like to do something I'd enjoy, not (for example) spend all bloody day in bloody queues for bloody rides.

MumiTravels · 29/08/2016 12:02

I think the point has been missed by a few.

I don't object to seeing photos of family days out. If you had a day out as a whole family then yes you had a family day out or if your kids have busy extra curricular activities then yes Thursday night may be family night.

The objection is just to the #familydayout or #suasageandchips #familytea

I love seeing photos of babies at the beach eating sand but not a baba at the beach #mylittleprinceeatingsand.

2rebecca · 29/08/2016 12:04

Agree it's nonsense. When I was recently helping my teenage son clear out his flat I didn't describe it as a "family day". Also my husband and dad are as much my family as my kids.
Haven't come across the #making memories thing but am disappointed # has migrated from twitter to facebook. I think # is useful when linking to events (I use it for my sporting hobbies) but is silly for every day things and phrases.

Nutgirl · 29/08/2016 13:11

The most cringey thing I ever saw on Facebook was a picture of a vase of flowers on the mantle piece with the caption #perfectmarriage #lovemyhubby

VOM!!
