Since using Facebook, I've noticed a lot of people pronounce things wrongly,
Discusing instead of disgusting
Pacific instead of specific
Brought instead of bought
Tenderhooks instead of tenterhooks
and this ones my favourite....
chester draws instead of chest of drawers

It make me wonder if I'm unknowingly guilty of some without knowing ?
list the ones you've noticed, don't forget to own up to any your guilty of, I will.

I've seen 'soar' to mean 'sore'. That's spelt incorrectly though, not mispronounced.

Brankolium · 25/08/2016 15:53

Equality pronounced equALity rather than equOLity.

It's trivial but sounds so jarring and totally distracts me from what the other person is saying!

ChocolateFuzz · 25/08/2016 15:54

Andylion
Apparently the musical term derives from Italian and the other forte derives from french

MattBerrysHair · 25/08/2016 15:56

Hunter clique is pronounced cleek.

PleaseGetOffTheTableDarling · 25/08/2016 15:58

ControVERsy instead of conTROVersy.

And yy to 'his'.

splendide · 25/08/2016 16:01

So how do you say forte and forte?

I think I say them the same - luckily I don't think I've said either very often.

NotMe321 · 25/08/2016 16:03

Um, what's the difference between forte and forte? I would say FOR-teh in any context.

Fluffsnuts · 25/08/2016 16:03

Aloud instead of either a loud or allowed.

But my real pet hate is gawjus (written) instead of gorgeous.

NotMe321 · 25/08/2016 16:03

And I was always taught that CONtroversy was correct.

splendide · 25/08/2016 16:05

Me too NotMe, but I've just looked it up and it should be "fort" for "it's my forte".

Although some people argue that Fortay is the correct English pronunciation now.

NotMe321 · 25/08/2016 16:07

His instead of He's!!!

I've come across that more often the other way round - e.g. "He went to get he's lunch and took he's car". Though I suspect that quite often autocorrect puts the apostrophe in. And yes, I have to sit on my hands not to point it out round here.

Boogers · 25/08/2016 16:08

Actually, thinking about it, there are two mispronunciations that bug me.

Schedule, pronounced s-ked-ule
Nuclear, pronounced nuc-u-lar

Both American pronunciations spoken by English people. Grrr.

splendide · 25/08/2016 16:10

I think nuc-u-lar is wrong in the US as well - didn't Bush used to get ridiculed about it?

Cashewnutts · 25/08/2016 16:10

Orlando and delicate Weirdly enough, I would use either jam-packed or rammed to describe somewhere that is very busy. Never heard of ram-packed though, maybe a mix up of the two?

One that gets me a lot is the mix up between desert and dessert.

ChocolateFuzz · 25/08/2016 16:16

Forte (to be good at something) is pronounced fort
Forte (the musical term) is pronounced forté

Alohamora · 25/08/2016 16:17

Mabey for maybe is becoming more common.

Draws instead of drawers is most annoying!

westhighlandterrier · 25/08/2016 16:21

I used to work with a lovely French lady who said 'donkey ears' instead of 'donkey's years'. We now regularly say it on purpose ☺

Doobigetta · 25/08/2016 16:24

I thought "expresso" was the French translation of "espresso", which is Italian. And as it is an Italian drink we've adopted, we use the Italian word. So "expresso" is incorrect in English and Italian, but fine in French.

Wispygypsy · 25/08/2016 16:24

Nougat... I always pronounced 'nugget' until my husband heard me one day and corrected me! 'Noo-gah', sorry! Blush

Boogers · 25/08/2016 16:25

Splendide amongst the many, many things Bush was ridiculed for! H says it, but we both have a speech impediment so I josh him on that and he joshes me on mine, but it bugs me when I hear politicians say it.

Andylion · 25/08/2016 16:39

ControVERsy instead of conTROVersy.

I know this isn't a defence on MN, but the former is the North American pronunucation.

Andylion · 25/08/2016 16:41

And I was always taught that CONtroversy was correct.
No wait. NotMe is correct. I was focussing on the UK pronunciation in the other post.

Sassypants82 · 25/08/2016 16:42

I saw on here 'I had a wrestler's night' instead of restless!

Gatehouse77 · 25/08/2016 16:52

Medcine instead of medicine.

Proply instead of properly.

Would/could/should of instead of have.

everdene · 25/08/2016 17:00

Penguin I'm glad someone got it! Grin

Rosesarered yes, that was the joke. Y'know, mispronunciations and all Hmm
