Since using Facebook, I've noticed a lot of people pronounce things wrongly,
Discusing instead of disgusting
Pacific instead of specific
Brought instead of bought
Tenderhooks instead of tenterhooks
and this ones my favourite....
chester draws instead of chest of drawers

It make me wonder if I'm unknowingly guilty of some without knowing ?
list the ones you've noticed, don't forget to own up to any your guilty of, I will.

I hate it when instead of even getting apostrophe placement wrong, people don't even attempt it at all - "Going out for Juliet birthday". I see this a lot, I'm not sure whether it's a regional thing to drop the 's or whether certain people are just lazy AF?

DelicatePreciousThing1 · 28/08/2016 11:15

@DrinkReprehensibly
Sadly, your boss is right. The first syllable is stressed in the English version.

The gibbon one is my favourite, so far!

Ham69 · 28/08/2016 11:20

Suddenly remember one my DD used to do. "Hubble bubble toil and trouble" was always "Hubble bubble toilet trouble". I didn't like to correct her, had me in stitches 😂

ScarletOverkill · 28/08/2016 11:20

Not read the full thread so don't know if this has been mentioned. Am watching Sunday Brunch and they are pronouncing Caribbean wrong Angry
The word has 1 r and 2 b's so it should be carib-be-an NOT carry-be-an Grin

I remember one time at work people had a debate over how you pronounce mocha. Some people say mow-ca. I still don't know which way is the correct pronouniation. I still say mocha.

DelicatePreciousThing1 · 28/08/2016 11:29

Cellardoor23
I disagree. Far too many people pass off genuine errors as typographical ones.
I sometimes type an i instead of an o because I use my phone for most things - because the keys are side by side. Leaving a letter off might also happen if you're typing too fast but leaving two letters off the word "queue" is unlikely.

DelicatePreciousThing1 · 28/08/2016 11:30

As if mock/a.

DelicatePreciousThing1 · 28/08/2016 11:32

...and the keys are side and side.

Cellardoor23 · 28/08/2016 11:33

Well for me it was an accident. It wasn't intentional I promise!

Cellardoor23 · 28/08/2016 11:36

With the mocha pronouniation he was South African so I don't know if it's a regional thing.

Lightbulbon · 28/08/2016 11:38

I didn't know 'one fell swoop' until this thread!

TaterTots · 28/08/2016 11:50

My dad always pronounces 'adult' as 'ah-dult' rather than 'add-ult'. It drives me insane.

DelicatePreciousThing1 · 28/08/2016 11:54

In English, the stress in one the first part of "adult" so your dad is right!

TaterTots · 28/08/2016 11:55

Bollocks.

DelicatePreciousThing1 · 28/08/2016 11:55

Your way is the American way so technically you are wrong. Wonder if you drive him insane?

I'm a Doctor. You have to study for many years to have the job I have. You have to be academically intelligent and yet almost ever single one of my colleges says 'Pacific' instead of 'specific'. I am one of the rare few who know how to say it properly. I don't think it's even a mispronounciation. A lot of people just think the word is 'pacific'.

TaterTots · 28/08/2016 12:01

Precious - 'ah-dult' is the American way.

DelicatePreciousThing1 · 28/08/2016 12:06

ADULT...

DelicatePreciousThing1 · 28/08/2016 12:10

ADULT...
Yeah. Both are used and acceptable but one is a British English pronunciation and the other the American English version.

DelicatePreciousThing1 · 28/08/2016 12:12

ADult - UK
AdULT - American

Clearer?

Madbengalmum · 28/08/2016 12:18

I get irritated when people talk about The Magna Carta, It is Magna Carta and just that! No THE involved. Soooo, many programmes and people get this wrong.

MackerelOfFact · 28/08/2016 12:19

It irks me when people randomly pluralise or make possessive shop or brand names.

Brands that do actually have an S at the end:
Sainsbury's
Woolworths
Nando's
Hellman's
Morrisons
McVitie's
Kellogg's

Shops and brands that DON'T have an S at the end:
Tesco
Asda
Aldi
Marks & Spencer
Nestlé
Cadbury
Mr Kipling

It's perfectly evident from simply reading the logos whether these brands end in an S or not, yet you still seem to get half the population talking about 'going to Tesco's' or 'I got it from Marks & Spencer's'. Grr. Rant over.
