Since using Facebook, I've noticed a lot of people pronounce things wrongly,
Discusing instead of disgusting
Pacific instead of specific
Brought instead of bought
Tenderhooks instead of tenterhooks
and this ones my favourite....
chester draws instead of chest of drawers

It make me wonder if I'm unknowingly guilty of some without knowing ?
list the ones you've noticed, don't forget to own up to any your guilty of, I will.

Damn you autocorrect! Saying mispronOUNciation obviously!

hanflan · 25/08/2016 15:03

I would actually love to know the answer to this one. I've always said (and it is spelt) mischievous (3 syllables) but lots of people say it "mischeeveeeous" (4 syllables). Which is right?! It drives me mad!

acasualobserver · 25/08/2016 15:08

Mischievous has three syllables.

hanflan · 25/08/2016 15:09

Also, people that say "wondering around" instead of "wandering around"!

ghostspirit · 25/08/2016 15:10

some of them are just spelling mistakes.. anyway i spell everything wrong even google dont know some of my spellings :/

but one i do see that bugs me is . is i cant be asked to do it. instead of i cant be arsed.

JudyCoolibar · 25/08/2016 15:10

persay for per se

JudyCoolibar · 25/08/2016 15:12

School role instead of school roll. I know it's not a mispronunciation, but what the hell.

And I hate hate hate nucular for nuclear. How hard can it be to run "new" and "clear" together?

user1466200877 · 25/08/2016 15:12

mischeevious instead of mischivous

DelicatePreciousThing1 · 25/08/2016 15:12

Espresso is correct. Ask an Italian.

paap1975 · 25/08/2016 15:13

"Ménage" instead of "manège" as used by riders. Both French words but both with very different meanings. Also, there is no "n" in the middle of restaurateur (also French). In both cases this is made worse by the fact that the people using them wrongly are usually trying to demonstrate their superiority

RhodaBorrocks · 25/08/2016 15:14

Opps instead of Oops
Ekk instead of Eek

And the latest that really grinds my gears:

His instead of He's!!!

"Awww but his only little!" "His poorly." "His adorable!" etc.

It makes me want to scream "The correct contraction of He Is is He's!!!" Or do a Ross Gellar and shout "H-e-apostraphe-s means 'He is', H-I-S means 'His'!"

DelicatePreciousThing1 · 25/08/2016 15:14

Mischievous.

booklooker · 25/08/2016 15:14

This sort of thread crops up with amazing regularity. Not that I mind, being a bit of a pedant myself.

But it is always the same stuff, I wish people could come up with some original stuff to be irritated/outraged by.

...Not that I can think of anything original right now.

ChocolateFuzz · 25/08/2016 15:15

People who pronounce forte (to be good at something) and forte ( the musical term) the same

DelicatePreciousThing1 · 25/08/2016 15:17

In the word mischievous, the first syllable is emphasised.

acasualobserver · 25/08/2016 15:18

Espresso is correct. Ask an Italian.

Defiantly, when they mean definitely.

StackladysMorphicResonator · 25/08/2016 15:21

Where on earth did that dictionary come from acasual? 'Expresso' is certainly not, nor has it ever been, correct.

cantbehappening · 25/08/2016 15:21

Vimpto instead of vimto.

wherethewildrosesgrow · 25/08/2016 15:21

booklooker I'm not a bit irritated, just wondering if I ever unknowingly make any mistakes, the expresso espresso ones got me thinking a bit, not sure how I said that one before

hanflan you are right. Where do people even get that fourth syllable from?

Penguin13 agree!

One foul swoop is a really common one, I agree.

I used to have a teacher who managed to shoehorn the phrase "peruvial vision" every class, even though he meant "peripheral"`

DelicatePreciousThing1 · 25/08/2016 15:23

Was it a wiki dictionary?

Hidingtonothing · 25/08/2016 15:27

Upmost instead of utmost drives me insane!
