To think the USA has to choose between two awful candidates

I am just amazed at how U.S. politics has ended up. We have a woman who steals nomination, lies, does speeches to Goldman Sachs then doesn't release them to the public and let's an ambassador die from her incompetence.

On the other side we have an ego maniac who treats people like dirt, attacks every minority under the sun and can't be trusted with the button.

If I was an American I would be ashamed of my country and how much of a joke it is. The amount of money in politics over there is a joke. I am glad we have PM May.

But in all honesty I think Trump is going to win. I have the gut feeling and I've predicted every election/referendum since John major. I predicted EU ref result as well. It scares me I hope I'm wrong, but then I don't like Hillary.

Which is what SCOTUS is for ?

Yes. But currently the country is operating in a completely different way than the framers of the constitution envisaged.

It was conceived as, above all else, a country where its citizens were protected from tyrannical dictators (like Donald Trump, kind of) - but the federal powers are so expansive that no one could argue Americans have genuine rights to privacy and in some cases freedom or freedom-related rights e.g. the right to know what you're being held for, the right to an attorney, the right to a trial, etc.

So the SC has not protected its citizens rights that vigorously (IMO) - maybe it's possible it won't defend separations of powers either.

There is always a risk this situation happening (two weak candidates imo) when the political spectrum is made of only two parties. I think the election will be a lot closer than a lot of people think it will be and I would not be surprised in the slightest if Trump triumphs.

LurkingHusband · 25/08/2016 12:03

Yes. But currently the country is operating in a completely different way than the framers of the constitution envisaged.

Ain't that the truth ? The founding fathers never envisaged professional politicians (a scourge of all democracies).

The older I get, the more I marvel at the wisdom of whoever (attribution is unclear) said:

A democracy is always temporary in nature; it simply cannot exist as a permanent form of government. A democracy will continue to exist up until the time that voters discover that they can vote themselves generous gifts from the public treasury. From that moment on, the majority always votes for the candidates who promise the most benefits from the public treasury, with the result that every democracy will finally collapse due to loose fiscal policy, which is always followed by a dictatorship.

AppleSetsSail · 25/08/2016 15:57

Nice, Lurking. Wink I think we're right around the 'collapse' point.

SenecaFalls · 25/08/2016 16:00

Trump is campaigning as a Strongman, which is entirely antithetical to the US system of government.

If MN threads had thumbnails this would be a great choice:

Oh right, her use of her private email server for classified State Department emails - she's still dissembling. This is further evidence of her shockingly poor judgement and arrogance.

She did exactly what the previous two Republicam Secs of State had done in response to the ineptness of the governmental IT dept.

No one seems to be baying for their blood or calling them them dissembling or arrogant, strangely.

And the emails were not classified when she sent/received them. They were classified after the fact by Republicans. Strangely (again).

BeALert · 26/08/2016 01:13

It was Americans that choose those two candidates in the first place, so they only have themselves to blame.

Fewer than 2% of Americans selected Donald Trump.

It was kind of them to hand the election to the Denocrats.

dybil · 26/08/2016 01:48

Thefitfatty - I disagree about Bernie being a career politician. Yes he has been in politics a very long time, but his core beliefs and policy positions have remained unchanged in decades.

Hilary is like the bulk of politicans in that she just seems to go with what will play best politically at the time, so as to garner votes and progress her career (see the recent trade u-turn).

Yes, male politicians have been doing this since forever, but this election has shown that Americans are sick of it, hence the rejection of 'normal' republican candidates for trump (even though I think it's all an act with him) and why Bernie did so well.

ReallyTired · 26/08/2016 02:48

Hopefully Farage's endorsement of Trump will be the kiss of death.

Way to hammer another nail in the coffin.

I pray for the death of Hillary Clinton This caught my eye as I scrolled up through your post. No, I will not read the rest of it, no matter how much effort you put into it.

Arkhamasylum · 26/08/2016 04:12

I pray for the death of Hillary Clinton

Yep. I'll read what you have to say when you can observe the social norms when it comes to political discussions.

Interesting god you've got there.

A British MP was murdered outside her office a few months ago. Words matter.

I'd want you to use your vote to inform the electoral process. That's what democracy is. If your preferred option is killing the candidates, then you are stupid and dangerous and I don't want to talk to you.

I'm not going to get rid of her. As it happens I don't live an ocean away and I'm going to vote for her.

mimishimmi · 26/08/2016 05:58

Either way, they're all beholden to the same interests which have knocked so many of us off in war... after war... after war.. after war. Look up Smedley Butler. The fascism didn't work for them last time, twill be total collapse this time.

You're too intense Shadow. It's only 6am in the morning here.

Arkhamasylum · 26/08/2016 06:17

If she wins this election, it will be because the majority of the people who vote in your country want her to be president. Those people disagree with you. They are allowed to do that. That's what democracy is.

It's your right to suck up whatever politically motivated conspiracy theories you like. What I object to is your assertion that 'the ballot doesn't work', that praying for the death of people who seek political office is somehow harmless. You complain about Putin and advocate the methods of Stalin.

Oh, and 'possibly killing'? If you have evidence that someone has been murdered, you should notify the police. Otherwise, shut up and stop regurgitating politically motivated conspiracy theories.

You sound so angry, as if the world is going about its business to annoy you. It's not. Get some perspective.

If you can't see the difference between Clinton and Trump, it's because you're not looking. If you think Assange is a poor, maligned saint, you're not looking. And if the god you believe in takes requests on murdering people you don't like, your moral high ground is a pathetic, dangerous joke.

What's wrong with the world? People like you.
