To have felt a bit scared for this newborn

Was in busy supermarket this afternoon.
Lots of kids/trolleys/shelf stackers etc.
There was a couple walking about, mum with trolley & dad with the teeniest of newborns I have seen in a while, all cute and floppy. But just being held in his arms.
I saw them a few times in the space of half an hr, and everytime all I could think was don't drop him/her!

AIBU for thinking it was a bit daft of them?

Fractured skull and GOSH.

He's fine now, but it upset me to read afterwards the sheer number of babies who have been injured from slings and funny enough not by their Dad's in supermarkets. Hmm

StripeyDogs · 22/08/2016 21:03

don't I'm sorry. I'm just getting carried away with the meaness that is aibu..... It's infectious
So fucking what if I feel nervous seeing a newborn being carried whilst juggling other things. No need for the attacks. Yabu will suffice.

Babies are tougher than they look. DS fell off the bed at about 6 weeks old onto a hard floor Blush. No injuries at all. He cried for a few minutes. That was it. He's 7 now and seems ok!

StripeyDogs · 22/08/2016 21:04

It also depends in what sling is being used. There is a huge difference to the safety of a tomy & and ergo.

Newborns do look so very little and vulnerable, they trigger our powerful protective instinct, sometimes with a jolt. So I get where you are coming from OP.
That said, parents do not drop their babies. You just don't see it happen. They hold them in their arms a lot, but dropping babies is not a thing.

Dontyoulovecalpol · 22/08/2016 21:06

Yes well a sling is a sling and most people aren't that interested in them, certainly not enough to do some kind of which? Comparison (or the hippy dippy equivalent)

Chipping I'm so sorry to hear that. What a bloody nightmare Flowers

CautionWankingMonkeys · 22/08/2016 21:07

Personally for extra safety I think you should just keep the baby in your uterus for an extra 18 years.

Chippednailvarnishing · 22/08/2016 21:07

Op don't make excuses for what you said to Dont. You made a huge sweeping statement that what happened to her was her fault.
You can't even own what you said.

You're just a GF. Admit it.

Dd hated her pram, hated the sling, hated everything other than being carried. She's 9 now, she survived to tell the tale. I really wouldn't worry.

StripeyDogs · 22/08/2016 21:09

What the fuck is a gf?

But this, THIS is no ordinary MN supermarket thread. This is the most MN supermarket thread EVER.

This is an m and s thread Wink

littlejeopardy · 22/08/2016 21:09

chippednail You made me curious so I googled 'baby sling injuries ' and really wished I hadn't. Some very sad stories out there. It had stupidly never occurred to me that there were risks in slings....mainly cos I could never figure out how to fasten mine anyway!

Glad you're LO was OK don't.

StripeyDogs · 22/08/2016 21:10

I'm not too sure where the dissing slings has come from?.... I mentioned that that's what I used but it's not the only solution Confused

I still get amazed at some of the things that worry people on here

A dad carrying his baby?? Has anyone suggested calling 101 Hmm

Chippednailvarnishing · 22/08/2016 21:11

To be clear I have no issue with slings, its just there are so many manufactures in different countries and there is no real safety testing done.

I also bought a sling with lots of good reviews...

AliceInUnderpants · 22/08/2016 21:12

Maybe he had to carry the baby himself as their robot was busy parking the car?

PeggyMitchell123 · 22/08/2016 21:15

The funniest comment they should have put baby in bag for life Grin

Op my dh used to carry our son in his arms, it was more natural for him and if the man you saw was anything like my dh, am sure he was very care of baby in terms of other people/possible spills.

Glad you didn't say anything to them, we would have been Hmm if someone had said something to us about the dangers of carrying baby in arms.

MissElizaBennettsBookmark · 22/08/2016 21:17

GF = Goady Fucker

For the record, I tripped and fell while crossing a road with my baby in a sling.

Laquila · 22/08/2016 21:18

This is an odd thread. I have been frequenting supermarkets for years and have never once had anyone ram a trolley into me or drop anything on me, nor have I ever seen that happen, so, based on my own experience and common sense, YABU.

Yeahbutnobutyeah1 · 22/08/2016 21:21

I too was told off for carrying DD2 round the maternity ward instead of wheeling her about in the little plastic cot thingy-I was Hmm

PhotosGinAndALongLieIn · 22/08/2016 21:23

It's just as well you didn't see me when DS was a baby. Not only did I carry him round the supermarket but I breastfed him whilst pushing the trolley round.

This.

Chippednailvarnishing · 22/08/2016 21:25

It must be all the breast milk flying around the aisles that the OP is so concerned about slipping on.

Stripeydogs · 22/08/2016 21:26

I tripped and fell with 6wk old ds in the pram knocking pram over sideways
My dh had a dog walkers dog knock dds pram forward and she broke her cheekbone.
But surely slingms and prams are still safer than carrying in arms in a supermarket.
For what it's worth, seeing a baby in arms in other situations such as cafes, in the street or school gates I wouldn't even notice.
Bit when you see someone juggling milk, butter & a baby in a busy supermarket with lots of other people crowded about, it made me nervous

Mishegoss · 22/08/2016 21:27

I can't believe people like this actually exist. You got your knickers in a twist over someone carrying their baby. I can't get my head around it. What the fuck..
