Miserable sods on train

Coming home today. Woman opposite proposed 'adults only' carriages because some kids were making a bit of noise. She 'didn't expect that in First Class'.

She also complained about the choice of butties, the coffee - not hot enough and not replenished often enough - and the seats. Seriously love...bog off!

No headphones is quite cunty, first class or not.

AgentProvocateur · 22/08/2016 08:17

No headphones = inconsiderate rude bastards, regardless of what class of carriage they were in.

Scribblegirl · 22/08/2016 08:56

No headphones is awful. You can get headphone splitters so that two can have a set each (DP and I have a splitter for watching films on long train journeys).

I was travelling on trains a lot this weekend and I'm usually super chilled about kids, but for some reason they were a lot more annoying than usual? Special thanks to the mum who did nothing to stop her toddler sticking his arms back through chairs and waving them in my face while I was trying to read .

Worst of all though was the mum with a pre-teen and a five year old. The pre-teen's language was appalling. I'm a big fan of effing and blinding myself but he couldn't have been more than 13 and it was every second word, usually directed at his (I assume) little brother. The mum did nothing to stop it. I was Shock.

Sorry, meant to say that I don't necessarily see anything wrong with the kids on your train, but if it was anything like what I was enjoying then I think I probably can understand the joyless bitch perspective!

olives106 · 22/08/2016 09:06

God, that sounds awful. Anything with no headphones is deeply inconsiderate.

I really really hate noise on trains, I think it's something to do with there being no escape from it. I know children make some noise so I try not to mind, but I have tackled people before now who're letting their children play noisy electronic games and asked them to turn the sound off. Probably makes me the 'miserable sod'.

Otherwise I always travel with earplugs and earphones. The best thing I find for shutting out noise is wave sounds played on my phone, it's low pitched so drowns out most external noise and I can close my eyes and imagine myself on a beach somewhere....

EmpressKnowsWhereHerTowelIs · 22/08/2016 09:19

I like the idea of wave sounds.

FrancisCrawford, you've reminded me to re-read those books. I wasn't quite so keen on the Niccolo set but really got into Lymond.

brasty · 22/08/2016 11:55

Low level tinny sounds from Ipads and similar, are much more distracting than slightly louder talking noises.

Dancingupthewall · 22/08/2016 11:59

Some people are working on the weekends.

And parents who give children iPads to watch, without earphones, and with the sound on, need to learn some manners.

If I pay for a First Class ticket or an upgrade on the weekends, it's because I want peace & quiet. That's what I pay for.

Dancingupthewall · 22/08/2016 12:03

No headphones - I presume because one iPad, two kids. Peppa sodding pig

Very very rude. The woman complaining was not a "miserable sod" - she had a point.

I wonder, when I read the defence of "children make noise" on threads like this - I wonder what sorts of adults these children will turn into. I wonder this especially when I read other threads about clearly inconsiderate, selfish rude adults. I often wonder if there's a cross-over ...

KeyserSophie · 22/08/2016 12:10

No headphones= hanging offence when I'm in charge. Two kids? Buy a splitter. They're about a quid.

IceRoadDucker · 22/08/2016 12:48

No headphones - I presume because one iPad, two kids. Peppa sodding pig. But I would rather that than them running up and down

False dichotomy. It's perfectly possible for children to sit down and not watch an iPad without headphones.

YoureAllABunchOfBastards · 22/08/2016 15:12

Well, for the first time in my life I am the more tolerant one! I'll accept AIBU - I did, however, think that moany fucker should have either asked the woman to be quiet, moved seats or shut the fuck up about it. Every few minutes she was hissing her husband's name and then telling him what her latest issue was.

iPad wasn't on the whole time and it wasn't loud, really.

What about the coffee not being piping hot, or the lack of free alcohol at weekends? Was she right to moan about that?

OP posts:
IceRoadDucker · 22/08/2016 15:54

"I accept I was being unreasonable. BUT I WASN'T REALLY, SHE WAS WRONG, I'M RIGHT."

Get over yourself.

brasty · 22/08/2016 15:57

The ipad does not have to be loud. In fact the background tinny noise where you can't make out what is actually being said, is extremely annoying. Certain noises are extremely annoying. It is not all about volume.

HornyTortoise · 22/08/2016 16:01

I hate the idea that kids can't travel first class tbh. If the parents are willing to pay for it then whats the issue. usually there is all of the 'why should X be upgraded when they didn't pay like everyone else..all about the money etc' but as soon as kids are involved people seem to think that even if it can be afforded, they should travel economy just because they are kids? Bizarre.

Having said that, I probably don't understand it as as I said, never been able to (or willing to in many cases) pay so much when a cheaper option is available Blush

HornyTortoise · 22/08/2016 16:01

Adults only carriages wouldn't be a bad idea in general though I guess.

HornyTortoise · 22/08/2016 16:03

Mind with adult only I expect the issues would just be 'ther eis someone eating something I don't like the smell of' or 'X is singing away to himself as he has drank a bottle of wine' or something. The issue with many seem to be they expect private travel rather than to have to share the space with others Grin

midsomermurderess · 22/08/2016 16:06

I would like the Quiet Coach to be only for adults.

Veterinari · 22/08/2016 16:08

It's amazing the number of people on planes, trains and buses that think the world wants to hear their music/YouTube/peppa pig or whatever

Get some flipping headphones!

StepAwayFromTheEcclesCakes · 22/08/2016 16:12

some folk are just like this, I was in hospital recently and the woman on my ward opposite spent all her time complaining... the visitors were too noisy, the woman next to her had snored all night, the food was bland, the nurses were ignoring her, I had my earphones in too often (to drown her out) she asked for a single room and was told no so wasn't happy with that, on it went. if you want such service then go private ffs. then the one next to me started up, a constant stream of verbal nonsense...if she thought it she said it out loud, several times. I knew her whole life history including very personal stuff in a few hours. she talked at me even when I was reading and when I was watching TV with my headphones on, until 11.30 the night of my op Shock. god it was a total nightmare I was so happy to come home.

SunnySomer · 22/08/2016 16:22

Re: keeping her luggage nearby - I'm totally with her. I was once at Newcastle station when the police were called. It turned out to be because of someone nipping into the first class carriage of the London-Edinburgh train and helping himself to a couple of cases from the luggage rack. As he was a serial offender, he'd been spotted, but it struck me as quite an easy crime to carry out if you need some cash very quickly.

Trills · 22/08/2016 16:28

Anyone who plays with anything electronic that makes noise and doesn't use headphones should be thrown off the train/bus at the next stop/station.

That includes the noises you get when you type. Click-click-click or beep-beep-beep with every letter. You can turn those off.

WhenSheWasBadSheWasHorrid · 22/08/2016 16:31

I would quite like an adult coach.

I'm really sorry everyone but we let the kids watch the iPad without headphones on a train - stupidly forgot the headphones.
Based on the reaction on this thread I'll make sure we never do it again.

witchywoohoo · 22/08/2016 16:43

Ffs it's PUBLIC transport. NOT an office. .. or a spa break...or a hotel where you expect to be able to have a sleep. It's a train for people (even those who are guilty of having not reached adulthood) to be transported from one place to another. Being able to work/relax/sleep is a bonus NOT a right and as many mentioned previously there are plenty of adult arseholes happy and willing to ruin journeys. If you don't like other human beings jog on, pass your driving test and buy a car!
