Miserable sods on train

Coming home today. Woman opposite proposed 'adults only' carriages because some kids were making a bit of noise. She 'didn't expect that in First Class'.

She also complained about the choice of butties, the coffee - not hot enough and not replenished often enough - and the seats. Seriously love...bog off!

I'd love adult-only carriages too.

StickyProblem · 21/08/2016 21:35

I did a First Class journey on Virgin recently and I got the impression that the other FC passengers had expected to be the only ones in FC. You get a bit more for your money in FC but you still haven't bought the whole train.

VeryBitchyRestingFace · 21/08/2016 21:42

This is why I never travel Business/First Class. It would grind my gears to pay extra to have to sit and listen to little Benjamin/Lavender screeching/shouting/singing when I could be equally miserable - and richer - in Standard.

And yes, I'm an intolerant, joyless cunt. Those are my better qualities. Grin

VeryBitchyRestingFace · 21/08/2016 21:43

Thank fuck. I thought I was the only person who thought this way. Blush

"What are they doing in my carriage/train/cinema/car park/shop/plane?? Get them out!"

JellyBelli · 21/08/2016 21:50

Ear plugs and headphones have saved my sanity on more than one occasion.

SallyMcgally · 21/08/2016 21:54

Funny what noise annoys and what doesn't. I-pad noise doesn't bother me at all - can just block out, but a witless, endless conversation drives me mad. I can't not listen.

GoLightlyHollie · 21/08/2016 21:54

As with flights, you might expect many things from paying up to 1st class but no children is not one of them. Despite a statistically greater chance of not being disturbed by children in 1st, it is neither a given nor an entitlement.

Hughpughbarneymagrew · 21/08/2016 21:55

I'd have no problem with adult only carriages. But while there are still first class carriages which aren't adult only I'll continue to travel in them with DS (6 months). I don't see why we shouldn't go FC if we want to, and there's more elbow room in the FC seats to breastfeed him Grin

RiverTam · 21/08/2016 21:55

If they were watching the iPad without headphones I would be very unimpressed, first class or standard.

RichardBucket · 21/08/2016 21:55

Listening to an iPad with no earphones? VVVVVVVVVVVU. The woman was totally right.

OTheHugeManatee · 21/08/2016 21:57

Did they have headphones for the iPad? If not that's fucking antisocial Hmm

WannaBe · 21/08/2016 22:00

It's called public transport for a reason. Wink everyone has paid the same amount of money to be there, therefore everyone is deserving of the same level of comfort (or lack thereof).

IMO children should be made to sit down and no way should be allowed to run up and down carriages, both for their safety and that of others. Was on a train recently where a tiny tot was being allowed to walk up and down the carriage and between carriages into ours. He kept coming up to the dogs and virtually falling over them/poking at them. In the end one of the people with me shouted back down the carriage "can whoever's child this is keep your child under control!".

Children talking though is just part and parcel of life. No-one deserves more peace and quiet because they might need to work. It's a train carriage not an office.

Depending on which train company though I might agree re the food. Great western for instance have awful food and it's extortionately expensive.

Shizzlestix · 21/08/2016 22:01

I'd love adult only carriages. I've booked the quiet part of first class for a trip in September. A trip on the Eurostar in first class was ruined by a bunch of loud young twenty somethings watching a film at top volume. Just my opinion, but first class should be quiet, so people can work, as companies seem to pay out for people travelling for work.

GabsAlot · 21/08/2016 22:02

ipads with no earphnes same as mobile phone conversations downright rude and annoying

PickAChew · 21/08/2016 22:11

Adults only isn't all it's cracked up to be. Was in the "quiet" coach with a fucking screechy hen party, a while back. It's not like the train was even half full, so they didn't need to be in there for any reason.

brasty · 21/08/2016 22:22

I have never seen a first class quiet coach.

IJustAteTheKidsFoodAgain · 21/08/2016 22:22

I travel first class with my children, mostly for the free food and guaranteed seats. I give them an iPad and earphones awaits judgement of poor parenting or colouring to do and they've never disturbed anyone. The same can't be said for adults who have over indulged in wine and decide they want to chat to them incoherently when they want to go to sleep/watch the ipad. Whatever class you choose its still public transport and if you don't want to be disturbed by people of any age it's probably best to get a taxi. Or a chauffeur.

EmpressKnowsWhereHerTowelIs · 21/08/2016 22:28

I was going to ask about the iPad and earphones too.

AGreatBigWorld · 21/08/2016 22:31

Many years ago I was upgraded with Wilf into FC as he is disabled. Wilf was being quite noisy so a man near us put his finger to his lip to hush him. Later on Wilf started again and before I could shush him the man got up to walk towards us and my heart sunk...... however man was lovely and asked Wilf to teach him some Sign Language!!! Smile

DandelionAndBedrock · 21/08/2016 22:48

Brasty they definitely used to have them on Virgin West Coast - maybe not now?

The thing I find the most annoying is when people (children, adults, ANYONE) keep loitering near the door sensors, so they spend the whole sodding journey opening, letting in the smells from the loo/buffet car/whatever, and closing again.

And YY to listening to other conversations - it's why I hate the quiet coach! Much rather do some good eavesdropping and imagine the back stories.

Lifeisontheup2 · 21/08/2016 22:49

Some years ago I started a thread about DH getting into 1st class only to find a family with 2 under fives and a recorder which was played at top volume from London to York. His texts to me nearly caused my phone to explode and caused immense MN hilarity.
Everyone was on his side. Grin

SocksRock · 21/08/2016 23:00

I wouldn't book 1st class with my kids, but would like to point out that, unless they've changed it recently, you can't opt to NOT be in the quiet coach. So when I book a table for the 4 of us and it's in the quiet coach I'm not able to move if the train is even a bit full as I can't get 4 seats together. I do keep the noise down, but it's obviously not completely quiet.

maddiemookins16mum · 21/08/2016 23:02

If they've paid for it, then it's tough. That said, ipads with no headphones and parents constantly doing the whole "oh Hugo mummy would rather you didn't stand on the seat" or "Courtney, get ere nah" or "sweetie, shall we have some mashed turnip dip with veggie sticks" gets annoying but hey, that's life. I often find adults in FC more annoying, self pompous business men on constant calls. In fact, if I recall, the worst journey I had recently was a vicar (in dog collar) who proceeded to phone every person in his parish for a catch up during a 2 hour journey. I'd have preferred Peppa Pig.

YoureAllABunchOfBastards · 22/08/2016 07:33

No headphones - I presume because one iPad, two kids. Peppa sodding pig.

But I would rather that than them running up and down. And train staff moved anyone who seemed to be uncomfortable with it. This woman was a PA mutterer/tutter who moaned in stage whispersSmile

I am with the woman.
