AIBU to want a peacock?

First post but I'm a long time lurker and know the etiquette is to explain if your first post is in Aibu, especially in the holidays.

I love peacocks (peafowl really I suppose). You only see them at stately homes or estates but I'd really like one.

I've been reading up on it and apparently they roam a bit hence not usually being in built up areas, but they come back home like cats do.

I think having a peacock would be amazing, and there are ways you can stop them screeching (not cruel ways). You can also buy a cock for £55, or £115 delivered. (Hens are more expensive.)

OH thinks I'm mostly joking and that next door's cats would kill it.

AIBU to be seriously considering this? I live in a town but it's a quiet road.

I would be so irritated if I lived next door to you. They are loud. Plus they'll scratch up your lawn.

stiffstink · 20/08/2016 22:54

If you get one, even if its female, please call it Ashley or Drew.

ijustwannadance · 20/08/2016 22:55

It would more likely kill next door's cat.
I was chases by one once. Nasty bugger it was.

ijustwannadance · 20/08/2016 22:55

*chased

MachiKoro · 20/08/2016 22:56

YANBU- they're lovely, and not particularly expensive either (when compared with dogs, for example)
They're scared of thunder/lightning though.

BrillianaHarvey · 20/08/2016 22:56

My mother used to have peafowl that took up residence with her after escaping from a local wildlife park. She adored the vile screechy crapping things and was beyond ecstatic when an egg appeared, duly followed by a peachick.
Just step away.

KentMum2008 · 20/08/2016 22:58

Get one and call it Chris.

Chris Peacock....

elephantoverthehill · 20/08/2016 22:58

Honestly do not do this. They make the most awful noise, the noise travels and it is usually very early in the morning IRC. Cockerels and corncrakes are slightly less annoying.

LyndaNotLinda · 20/08/2016 22:59

They make the most awful racket

megletthesecond · 20/08/2016 23:00

Aren't they really bloody noisy?

Mind you, councils often have regulations about owning chickens, bet they don't say anything about peacocks though.

DameXanaduBramble · 20/08/2016 23:05

They're not always noisy. They can be for a short while then you don't hear them for days. I do worry a cat will get them though.

Boffered1 · 20/08/2016 23:05

There is one just down the road from where I live (we are not rural). It often escapes and can be seen wandering down the main and busy road! I have friends who live near to it and complain it wakes them on a regular basis with its loud morning racket. Don't do it if you want to be on good terms with your neighbours.

averylongtimeago · 20/08/2016 23:07

We used to live about a mile from a friend who kept a couple of peacocks. We could hear them in our garden. They used to roost on her next door neighbour's roof and screech all the time. They scratched up their own garden, plus the immediate neighbours gardens too. They were an unmitigated nuisense.
No one was surprised when they "disappeared" ........

Smurfit · 20/08/2016 23:08

Don't underestimate how loud they are. I grew up in the country and could hear the neighbours from my bedroom... It was at least 600 metres away. They kinda honk. If I were you, I would look up if their noise habits are similar to chickens where the hens are fairly quiet but the roosters crow.

dudsville · 20/08/2016 23:08

Come be my neighbour and get one, I love them!

idontlikealdi · 20/08/2016 23:08

They are horrifically noisy.

Velvetdarkness · 20/08/2016 23:09

Is it just the noise that would worry people? Apparently if you keep them in a coop overnight it stops them calling. The info also says they only call during mating periods.

I only want one cock, not hens as well. No plans to breed!

Loving the name suggestions but not sure Plan Peacock has got wings, from the replies here :(

They are horrendously noisy. Beautiful though. I think one on his own might be a bit sad though and really you need a stately home (or minor manor house) to have a flock of peacocks/ hens.

Pigeonpost · 20/08/2016 23:10

Surely you'd need a HUGE coop to fit his tail in?

Banana99 · 20/08/2016 23:10

My friend lived somewhere there was several - she literally would plot their murder daily.....

bigboypants · 20/08/2016 23:10

Your neighbours will hate you. My dm's neighbour down the road has them, they tear up most of the neighbours gardens just for fun, they never actually want anything from the plants. They roost in the trees and do the biggest craps on any car parked below. They scare the kids in the street and we've opened the door before and found them blocking the way to the car. Never mind the noise of them all day long.

If they were people they'd have asbos.

Rainbowqueeen · 20/08/2016 23:11

The noise the noise!!!!

Seriously this is why large estates have them, so they can be far away from the house at night so you don't hear them

elephantoverthehill · 20/08/2016 23:12

Peacock feathers are supposed to be really unlucky. I know it's probably rubbish. Just don't take one into the house. One of my very few superstitions.

AbyssinianBanana · 20/08/2016 23:13

Ooo, I was sure someone else would beat me to it... Here ya go OP

Now imagine that precious snowflake's Mummy tearing you to bits because your peacock chased her DD!?

I love the idea of a couple of peacocks strutting majestically around the lawn of my end of terrace house.

I would sit outside in a camping chair admiring them whilst sipping tea from a dainty China cup - pinky extended.

The possibilities are endless....swans in a paddling pool, and a pheasant shoot on the patio.
