AIBU to want a peacock?

First post but I'm a long time lurker and know the etiquette is to explain if your first post is in Aibu, especially in the holidays.

Smile

I love peacocks (peafowl really I suppose). You only see them at stately homes or estates but I'd really like one.

I've been reading up on it and apparently they roam a bit hence not usually being in built up areas, but they come back home like cats do.

I think having a peacock would be amazing, and there are ways you can stop them screeching (not cruel ways). You can also buy a cock for £55, or £115 delivered. (Hens are more expensive.)

OH thinks I'm mostly joking and that next door's cats would kill it.

AIBU to be seriously considering this? I live in a town but it's a quiet road.

Duck poo is quite squitty and slimy, not always green though. Geese poo is more like solid like a small cats

MiddleClassProblem · 21/08/2016 20:44

Percy's girlfriends? Are they just random birds as they just have him?

MiddleClassProblem · 21/08/2016 20:44

Are his babies hybrids? They could be perfect for op

Piratepete1 · 21/08/2016 20:48

Percy appears to be very choosy when it comes to peahen and will only tolerate pure white peahens. He is partial to the odd chicken as referred to previously but being a bit unsteady on his feet now he's an old chap they can successfully fight him off.

RowenaDahl · 21/08/2016 20:54

Oh good grief, have you ever heard them? They would do my head in.

We stayed at a hotel where they lived in the garden. They are beautiful but bonkers.

Velvetdarkness · 21/08/2016 20:56

I like the sound but I accept IABU and will not get a peacock.

Well you find them at big manor houses and the like, because they have plenty of space to roam, and far enough away from neighbours, so if you live miles from anywhere with no neighbours go for it. But I reckon if you have neighbours it won't be long before we get an "AIBU to want to shoot my neighbours peacock Grin ".... Which will of course result in a massive bun fight between the animal lovers and the pet loathers.

Sagethyme · 21/08/2016 21:03

Oops to slow at typing and just seen your update. Geese are great though!

MiddleClassProblem · 21/08/2016 21:07

I once saw a programme about a family in the uk who had a pet wallaby. A FREEKING WALLABY! Like a house rabbit, just bigger

zwellers · 21/08/2016 21:19

How about this op a peacock pheasant. Easier to house and quieter

I like the peacock wig on a more amenable bird. There are pheasants in the trees in my garden. I'll offer them up for a bit of peacock pimping.

Pimp my pheasant.

it'll save me running the fuckers over when they block the lane, apparently struggling to remember that they're avian and have the power of flight

I hatched quite a few peachicks a few years ago. they were really interesting- they hatch with some of their wing feathers already in place, and they can fly pretty much immediately. They are also very good for killing rodents (when bigger!).
They are noisy buggers and you can't just give them chicken feed and hope for the best, but the hatching eggs can go for up to a tenner each, much more if you have white peafowl.

Fruitbat1980 · 21/08/2016 22:57

My parents neighbour has 3. Bloody nightmare always wandering off for days and screeching all night.
But a meerkat. Apparently they also tear up garden but don't screech. 😉

NapQueen · 21/08/2016 23:00

Love this thread!

Flowerfae · 21/08/2016 23:11

There is a peacock in the village my parents live at, he used to live in the castle nearby, got bored of the castle and moved to the village, he now struts around like he owns the place and gets fed by lots of different people (he has a name). He is quite noisy even if he is at the other side of the village, its not all the time though, but from what I gather they need quite a lot of space so couldn't just have one in the garden.. well not unless you have a really large garden and even then they don't stay put.

blinkowl · 21/08/2016 23:19

These neighbours certainly aren't keen!

RedOnHerHedd · 21/08/2016 23:50

Not unreasonable to want one at all. I want a polar bear but DH thinks I'm being unreasonable. He's the unreasonable one, they're so cute and cuddly!

molyholy · 21/08/2016 23:56

Sorry OP, not rtft, but no. Do not get a peacock. If I lived next door to one, I wouldn't lreave the hpuse. They are terrifying. We have them at one of our local parks which has a kind of zoo type thing. They follow you round with their evil eyes. I have a fear of anything with wings plus they are so noisy

molyholy · 21/08/2016 23:57

leave the house fat fingers

VanillaSugar · 22/08/2016 00:51

Thank you. About the duck poo, I mean.

OhGodWhatTheHellNow · 22/08/2016 17:41

My MIL has three, they just turned up, one by one, so clearly will piss off somewhere better if it suits them. They live with her chickens.

I believe they came from a colony in a nearby village - the rest met a mysterious end when somebody finally snapped .

Cinnamoncookie · 22/08/2016 17:53

I've done a few summers working on a seasonal project in a park that has them. Ridiculously loud, pecky, evil fuckers. We had to have supersoakers to get them to move.

acasualobserver · 22/08/2016 18:15

Why not get one and, if doesn't work out, roast it?
