AIBU to want a peacock?

First post but I'm a long time lurker and know the etiquette is to explain if your first post is in Aibu, especially in the holidays.

Smile

I love peacocks (peafowl really I suppose). You only see them at stately homes or estates but I'd really like one.

I've been reading up on it and apparently they roam a bit hence not usually being in built up areas, but they come back home like cats do.

I think having a peacock would be amazing, and there are ways you can stop them screeching (not cruel ways). You can also buy a cock for £55, or £115 delivered. (Hens are more expensive.)

OH thinks I'm mostly joking and that next door's cats would kill it.

AIBU to be seriously considering this? I live in a town but it's a quiet road.

big love your post i want one now !

Uricon · 20/08/2016 23:15

When you are awoken at 3.30 AM by their plaintive wails you might be a bit less keen (they are a plague on our houses that the collective neighbourhood is trying to rehome)

mrsfuzzy · 20/08/2016 23:16

and yours ineed Grin

Shizzlestix · 20/08/2016 23:16

Pmsl at Ineedmore!

OP, there is no way to stop them crying. Believe me, a mate has a few (she lives in rural France) and they are ridiculously loud. YABVU as you have neighbours.

elephantoverthehill · 20/08/2016 23:17

You forgot the grouse I need

madgingermunchkin · 20/08/2016 23:18

You can't keep just one, it's cruel. You'd need a pair.

We had them growing up, and one was obsessed with cars. Standing on them, attacking them. Made a mess of the paint work.

I would say, unless you live in the arse end of nowhere, with acres of space, just don't do it.

madgingermunchkin · 20/08/2016 23:18

And yes, they are bloody noisy.

Velvetdarkness · 20/08/2016 23:18

If they were people they'd have asbos.

Snigger. That might be part of why I like them.

I love their feathers. I don't believe in bad luck so that wouldn't bother me.

Are they really not possible to keep quiet? They sound even more fab now I know they chase things! I used to want geese for guard purposes (not that I have anything worth stealing) but they're not pretty like peacocks.

They obviously divide opinion! I didn't expect it to be so marmite.

I actually misread the title as AIBU to want to be a Peacock and even after getting to the discussion with the dp about the possibility of it still didn't twig.

I did reread the op properly the second time. Blush

BreakfastAtSquiffanys · 20/08/2016 23:20

Apparently they are also prone to attacking parked cars.
They she their reflection and think it is a rival peacock. They also like to rip off rubber window seals of cars.
And if they are only noisy during mating periods... The ones on farm nearby must be permanently horny!

MiddleClassProblem · 20/08/2016 23:20

Get a white one too

nennyrainbow · 20/08/2016 23:21

There are some living on our road ( rural area) about 200 metres away. We can hear them sometimes in the garden but I don't really notice it. We have chickens including roosters so all the noises blend in together. I think they're lovely.
I have seen them wandering out onto the (quiet) road occasionally. They're so big that people always see them so I've never known one get run over.

MovingOnUpMovingOnOut · 20/08/2016 23:22

You should get two. Call them Chas and Dave.

user1467976192 · 20/08/2016 23:23

We had mr peacock who used to keep peacocks, scared the shit out of my cats though

AIBU to want a peacock?
TaraCarter · 20/08/2016 23:24

I should say, YABU, but I find the idea of a pair of peacocks in the average suburban garden so delightfully incongruous that I can't bear to.

Do you think you could just borrow them, to get it out of your system? Grin It would be like using a toy library for items that are too big or too expensive to own permanently.

MelanieCheeks · 20/08/2016 23:24

Why do you want one?

sglodion · 20/08/2016 23:27

I am terrified of peacocks. They seem really menacing to me. God I hope none of my neighbours ever get one Confused

Purplepicnic · 20/08/2016 23:28

They wander. I know someone who has two (huge house) and his neighbours are forever phoning him in fury to make him get them out of their gardens.

villainousbroodmare · 20/08/2016 23:28

Will screech and drive you and your neighbours mad, while trashing all the gardens they can access and eventually disappearing.

If you want birds, why not look into some really beautiful chickens? I was at an agricultural show last weekend where they had stunning lavender and navy blue hens.

MaryMargaret · 20/08/2016 23:29

you could get a couple of of these maybe...?

They are beautiful but the noise !!

Velvetdarkness · 20/08/2016 23:32

MelanieCheeks I just love them. They're so beautiful. It's their shimmeryness and massive tails.

Villainous - chickens just wouldn't be the same. Although I'd love fresh eggs.

Tara - I'm loling at the thought of a peacock library!

My PiL neighbours have Peacocks. We can always hear them. My PiL hate them. They have a huge garden.

This. Where I used to work the people who owned the property next door had peacocks. The noise is awful and the car thing is true. They would wander around our car park and peck at their reflection. A colleague even had her rear windscreen smashed.

They are gorgeous creatures though.
