Woman in supermarket queue behind me

wowowowow · 19/08/2016 18:47

today shoved up all my shopping (on the conveyor belt) and started to heap hers on.

I didn't know what to say as I would never dream of interfering with someone elses stuff but I don't know if I am being precious - am I?

SleepDeprivedandCranky
Agree I always wait until the person In front put the divider down..☺

I put my groceries on higgledy piggledy..but piled all over each other to take up less room along the belt..Sometimes. .cold or heavier stuff together or nappies first as they don't need a bag..lol I put the divider for the next person as soon as I can..but panic I'm not packing fast enough and holding others up Hmm

BreconBeBuggered · 22/08/2016 14:34

JudyCoolibar, no, I'm not standing at the desk or staring into space. I'm lifting shopping onto the conveyor belt and packing it at the other end. There's no capacity for purse-juggling if I want to keep up with the checkout operator. Local papers are always warning about undesirables making off with contactless cards, too, so I'd rather not leave mine unattended.

chough · 22/08/2016 14:35

Have to agree with Decaff re Aldi/ Lidl packing etiquette.
Anyone still packing bags at the checkout instead of paying and shifting out of the way would get short shrift at the Aldi I go to: customers kept waiting would be upon the miscreant like a pack of wolves.

Sleepandchocolate · 22/08/2016 14:37

Scan as you shop. Every time. I have a mini panic attack otherwise.

scampimom · 22/08/2016 14:39

Ooh no, I don't pile stuff up on the conveyor belt. Just one thing per space, no stacking. Sure, it takes up more room, but then the conveyor belt moves really quickly once the cashier starts packing - hey presto, room at the back soon becomes available.

Used to be a cashier myself, and never could understand why people thought it would be quicker to stack umpteen things up.

Also, some people will hold their shopping back while the conveyor belt is moving forward, as they assume that if you're sitting behind a till you must be too thick to realise that their shopping is separate. Clutching at it, like a I'll-never-let-go-Jack kind of way. Bless. Supermarkets make everyone go slightly mad. Must be the glaring lights combined with the sense-lulling bakery wafts and air alive with till boops.

tshirtsuntan · 22/08/2016 14:40

For lidl/Aldi you need the big blue bags from ikea, lay two in the trolley whilst in the queue, heavy stuff first on the conveyor belt then you can just sweep it all into your trolley...job done!

scampimom · 22/08/2016 14:40

Oh yes, Aldi - scoop straight into the trolley, pay, sort out at your leisure at the benches provided for that purpose.

I love Aldi. Didn't their caviar face cream win an award or something, at about 10% of the price of some posh ones?

3littlefrogs · 22/08/2016 14:46

I have this.

packingsorted.co.uk/product/trolley-bags-original-vibe-set-4-bags/?gclid=CJGE29mS1c4CFUlmGwodgOgGwQ

It is a great time saver.

I too position my trolley behind me as I approach the checkout, pulling it to the far end of the belt, behind the cashier, once I have unpacked everything. This stops people getting right up behind me when loading stuff onto the belt.

I still get annoyed with people who stand right behind me when I am paying by card though. Very rude. You wouldn't do it at a cash point so why do it at the checkout?

MrsHathaway · 22/08/2016 14:46

Aldi tell you to pack at the shelf not the till so it is rude to staff and customers alike to pack at the till. But yes, IKEA bags are the way forward.

I've played the parallel divider game. DC1 absolutely loves it (and he is generally very compliant). The trick is to tut when the next person inevitably turns it round, as though they're the one doing it unusually.

Shoving someone else's shopping up is definitely rude. It makes shit all difference to how quickly you can actually pay and get gone: your own stacking and behaviour are the only things within your control which actually affect your speed.

chough · 22/08/2016 14:46

Not tried that face cream, scampi, but, yes, it's supposed to compare favourably with the La Prairie cream, and the packaging looks the same.

HexBramble · 22/08/2016 14:55

..

Waxlyrically · 22/08/2016 15:09

Scan as you go is the way forward - I don't think I could cope with checkout etiquette ever again!

sherbert83 · 22/08/2016 15:18

I work on a checkout and see this kind of stuff all the time - mainly I just sit back in quiet amusement but if someone is being really out of order I have been known to say something to the offender. I am working tonight, if anyone comes in and attempts a divider sword fight it will literally make my day 😂😂

Bahhhhhumbug · 22/08/2016 15:23

I always keep my trolley behind me as a barrier between me and the person behind to stop them doing this sort of thing. Doesnt stop some of them pushing it into your legs though I push it right back at 'em though . There are a lot of ignorant feckers people around though and this seems to be most apparent in checkout queues. My DH , growing tired of me coming home suitably outraged by outrageous personal space invasions etc. told me he always simply says 'Do you mind ?' in those kinds of situations. But he's big and 'ard innit and I'm just a wuss so just inwardly fume

IamtheZombie · 22/08/2016 15:31

Due to her debility from nearly 5 years of treatment for cancer, Zombie has two speeds - Slow and Slower. When she's going around the supermarket she tries to load items into the trolley with regard to then needing to unload the items onto the conveyor belt and then packing.

Around here almost every checkout clerk asks if you need help with your packing before beginning to scan the items. Zombie always tells them that she's a bit slow but that she can manage. She has put the items on the conveyor so that they come through in batches of similar: tins, jars, toiletries, magazines together; chilled items together to go into the insulated bags; crushables last. She does stack when possible. While packing she periodically needs to check how heavy the bags are so she doesn't strain her post-op hernia when lifting them.

If the person behind her starts rearranging her shopping on the conveyor belt that is only going to slow the process down even further.

She does however normally have time to have located her debit card and store card and slip them either in her jeans pocket or the side pocket of her handbag while waiting for the person in front of her to finish.

ApocalypseNowt · 22/08/2016 15:48

I thought the divider game was called 'Chaos' or something?

That's what I call it. I get my friend and dh to play it too. They're loads better than me. Putting the divider at right angles makes me really tense so i bottle it or have it at a weird 45 degree angle.

I'm going to start playing it again with confidence.

Teenyloves · 22/08/2016 18:26

Someone started 'helping' to load my shopping from my trolley onto the conveyor one. He got swiftly told to not touch my stuff!!

Gabilan · 22/08/2016 18:51

You're standing there at the desk, no-one is going to nick it if you put it down under your shopping bag at the end. Or, better still, if you're paying by card, get your card out and put that down ready for use

I've lived in some fairly nasty places where it is indeed possible that someone would nick something under those circumstances. I get my card out and stick it in my back pocket if there's a point at which I'm standing in a queue doing nothing.

RaspberryOverload · 22/08/2016 19:06

JudyCoolibar Mon 22-Aug-16 13:33:40

So why not get your purse out while you're waiting in the queue?

Because

  1. I am usually with Mum, who's in a wheelchair. That means loading her stuff up onto the belt, then mine, and then packing her stuff, then paying for her stuff using her contactless card because she can never reach it, then packing my stuff as it comes through. Only then do I get a chance of getting my purse out. No point getting it out any earlier, as I need two hands to pack for both mum and me.

  2. Because in my area there are indeed twats who can and do try to snatch purses, cards, etc at the till. It nearly happened to me once, but I was quick enough to grab before he did.

So no way am I getting the purse out early.

dizzykipper1 · 22/08/2016 23:57

I once had someone stand so close as I was packing my shopping in Sainsburys that they were blocking the card machine... I asked them if they were paying for my shopping as well?! They moved back pretty sharpish!

Lilacpink40 · 23/08/2016 00:06

Love the comments about slowing down. I do that and also if I notice someone trying to push forwards I'll very slowly walk backwards into them. Invading their space then suddenly turning to face them as though surprised that they're that close usually puts scares them back.

SpookyPotato · 23/08/2016 00:30

I wouldn't mind this as long as nothing was damaged but it's never happened! I do find in Aldi that people don't look at how much I have left in my trolley and start loading theirs on, which just amuses me as they always have to move it Grin

Chihuahualala · 23/08/2016 00:55

I also work on a check out and it amuses me no end.
Never load the belt from the middle!!!

theoldtrout01876 · 23/08/2016 01:17

Where I live they have teenagers who pack your shopping, its great. ( Infact they have teenagers who walk you to your car with a huge umbrella when its raining then load your car up too, usually if you have wee ones someone routinely pushes your trolley to your car and loads it) It is usually the first job a teenager gets here, my local store will hire from 14 years old,pay well too for a 14 year old.NO ONE would EVER dream of touching your shopping, gad I have cold sweats just thinking about that

Last time I was home I stood and watched them scan all my shopping, didnt realise I had to pack, caused chaos. I was horrified Grin

notamummy10 · 23/08/2016 01:46

Aldi's checkout terrify me but it only takes a few minutes compared to other supermarkets, unless you're one of the twats people who decide to pack their bags at the till and totally disregarding the bench behind them.

I find it happens a lot in places in Iceland, who have one of the slowest services ever... Not to mention the belt isn't that long at their tills!
