Burkinis

We've all seen the fuss about them, but last night I saw my first one in 'real life', which got me thinking. Also today two of my friends were arguing about them on FB - one against any ban, the other claiming they are a symbol of oppression.

My view has pretty much always been that it's just a different type of swimsuit; no different to some women wearing bikinis and others wearing one-pieces. I'd always thought the bans in places like Cannes were all about the culture/assimilation issue; it hadn't really crossed my mind that the 'modesty' might be being forced on women.

What do you think?

Important to who, where, when and how loveowls

Mjingaxx · 19/08/2016 09:57

And do you think we should ascertain whether nuns really want to wear their costume/uniform, as well?

SoupDragon · 19/08/2016 09:59

The important thing to ascertain is is it a choice?

I disagree. I think that is a complete separate debate to the burkini.

I don't agree with women being forced to cover up by men but, if that is what is happening due to their religion, we shouldn't punish the women for it by taking away clothing they are allowed to wear.

GarkandGookin · 19/08/2016 10:04

I am not Muslim but would consider wearing a burkini on a beach as I burn and am very self-concious. My body, my choice. I don't think they should be banned, I think more people should consider covering up in strong sun.

we were on a beach in France. A family arrived. The woman was wrapped up head to toe and the bloke was in swimming shorts and bare chest. She had a fan and looked visibly uncomfortable and stayed in the shade the whole time. I felt so sorry for her. This thread so far seems to show that people will fly in the face of common sense and equality to be seen to be liberal and politically right on. It sucks.

What does that have to do with burkinis papa?

YourNewspaperIsShit · 19/08/2016 10:20

It isn't feminist to insist people show more flesh than they want to. It's revolting.

Totally agree, it's the absolute opposite of feminism. Even women who may be oppressed won't have oppressors suddenly saying they're allowed to wear a thong bikini because they aren't allowed their brukinis on. It just means they won't be able to enjoy the beach with their children, it's heartbreaking.

And for those who chose to wear them, they will also not be able to enjoy the beach. It's lose-lose for everyone but phobics.

YourNewspaperIsShit · 19/08/2016 10:25

Papa I'm visibly uncomfortable in many things I choose to wear. I can garuntee millions of women wear clothing by choice that isn't very comfortable or practical for aesthetic purposes.

We had a heatwave yesterday and I wore a black hoodie, scarf and black skinny jeans. I was visibly sweating, had a fan and hiding in the shade. I was not oppressed.

Although the burkini is actually a swimsuit not a burka.

OfaFrenchmind2 · 19/08/2016 10:27

I agree with the ban. I am from south of France, and I will be damned if we accept this normalisation of the otherness of woman. But then I am also pro-burka ban, and anti-veil at school and administration, so I think I feel quite differently from my british counterparts. That's fine, I don't tell you how to govern (or not govern) your country and lifestyle.

SoupDragon · 19/08/2016 10:31

So, you think you have the right to force your dress expectations onto them instead of the expectations of their religion. In my mind, that makes you equally bad.

Mjingaxx · 19/08/2016 10:31

It is heartbreaking shitnewspaper Sad

Although I do wonder how it will be policed. Are the police going to patrol beaches? Are they going to ARREST women for not showing enough flesh? What is the limit for how much you have to cover up?

I think a national burkini day of protest is in order.

Mjingaxx · 19/08/2016 10:35

Are wetsuits not allowed? Can people where leggings and a shirt to protect from UV rays? What about swim skirts? Kids?

I imagine you can where any of the above if you are white, huh, and bought your outfit in TopShop. Just Black and Brown women forced to wear less clothese than they are comfortable with

Yukduck · 19/08/2016 10:35

Sorry if it's been said but the post is too long to read every post!

I would propose that beaches are divided into areas for full burkini and anyone on them (male or female) does the full head to toe cover up. Men might find this hard but tough. Their rules. Other areas of the beach could be reserved for the bikini or budgie smuggler brigade.
It is just an extension of the dog/non-dog beach areas and the smoking/non-smoking areas and the kiddie/kiddie free areas really. We have a special reserved beach area in Studland Dorset where nudists can sunbathe. You would not go there if you wanted to sunbathe with clothes on as you would feel very out of place, and I would not walk my dog there or take my grandchildren (more because I am easily embarrassed and a bit old now and a bit shy and certainly do not want to show my wobbly bits!!)

It is just about helping each person to feel more comfortable doing what they do and enjoying the beach.

Mjingaxx · 19/08/2016 10:35

*wear, not where

YourNewspaperIsShit · 19/08/2016 10:35

I'd be well up for that! I saw an absolutely gorgeous one on a lady while visiting Alton Towers Splash Landings, I was going to compliment her but was worried she would think I was being sarcastic as everyone else seemed to be segregated. Which was crap in itself

Mjingaxx · 19/08/2016 10:37

Ah yes. Segregation of Muslims. Great idea Hmm

CurlyMoo · 19/08/2016 10:37

Apparently a wetsuit with hood is fine, it is the item which is sold as a burkini which will be banned Hmm Apparently as of yesterday four women have been fined and six cautioned for wearing them. Police are patrolling the beach.

OfaFrenchmind2 · 19/08/2016 10:39

No, i expect my country, where I still vote, has the right to put limits to the influence of a mindset that separates so strongly women from men, and consider the woman body as something that needs to be hidden to be respectable.

SoupDragon · 19/08/2016 10:39

Shock seriously???

YourNewspaperIsShit · 19/08/2016 10:40

No-one wants to learn from historic mistakes it seems Confused

Idontthinkso1980 · 19/08/2016 10:40

I think let them do what they want
People have such double standards
Christians can not decide the rules for the rest of the world
