To not understand why some people have the TV on all day long

This is certainly not a dig, I am genuinely interested in why people do it. Perhaps I just have the attention span of a knat or rubbish channels, but I can never find anything to watch. Help me understand!

Background noise

SoleBizzz · 18/08/2016 17:35

Company for me!

Oysterbabe · 18/08/2016 17:36

Background noise. I'm not watching it 90% of the time.

Amelie10 · 18/08/2016 17:37

Background noise too. I don't actually sit down and watch, just feels like company.

Fairylea · 18/08/2016 17:37

I like the background noise. It's like a crackling fire, comforting and familiar :) We don't sit and watch it all the time, only if there's something that grabs us. If we sit and watch a film or a series etc in the evening we turn it up a bit and don't chat through it, otherwise it's usually on CBeebies and ds plays and sometimes watches a bit of it. We go out lots every day too!

LeSquigh · 18/08/2016 17:37

YANBU. I grew up in a house that ALWAYS had the TV on, regardless of if anyone was actually watching it. It only goes on now it something is actually being watched. However I do have the Olympics on in the background at the moment whilst I'm also on here. I am multi tasking!

Autumnsunshinebaby · 18/08/2016 17:40

Thanks all!

So for those of you who have it on for company or background noise, would you have it on whilst your children, if you have them, are playing with you? And what about if visitors came over?

OP posts:
SoleBizzz · 18/08/2016 17:42

My DS hates TV and is in his room listening to music. (He is blind) TV is off when visitors are here twice a year! But when I visit friends they leave their TV on low volume.

Gottagetmoving · 18/08/2016 17:42

Why do people need background noise? Confused

LiviaDrusillaAugusta · 18/08/2016 17:43

I live alone and I refuse visitors so I have it on when I'm home - although I often watch DVDs etc

KoalaDownUnder · 18/08/2016 17:43

I detest background noise. I can't even stand music most of the time, let alone random talking.

So that's why I never have the tv on unless I'm actively watching it. I just assume that some people are the complete opposite and find it soothing.

I have it on because I like hearing people talking, but I hate having the picture flickering away. I make an effort to listen to the radio more, and sometimes I will turn it off for an afternoon when we're at home for the day.

Artandco · 18/08/2016 17:45

It would drive me batty. I couldn't concentrate with constant background noise

LiviaDrusillaAugusta · 18/08/2016 17:45

Why do people need background noise?

Because people like different things - some people like silence, some don't.

Why do people need background noise?

What a stupid question. Maybe, just maybe because all people are different. Just that.

LemonRedwood · 18/08/2016 17:47

I find silence incredibly uncomfortable, and I don't like being uncomfortable in my own home, Gottagetmoving. TV or radio always on when I'm alone. Will usually put background music on when I have company unless it's my best friend and then we watch Don't Tell The Bride

LiviaDrusillaAugusta · 18/08/2016 17:47

There are a lot of these kind of posts 'why do people like this or that' and faux shock that people have different tastes - I'm always genuinely shocked at the lack of imagination!

rainbowstardrops · 18/08/2016 17:48

Just for background noise and company really. I've got a radio in the bathroom that I put on when I shower too!
Funny really because I have a real intolerance of other people's noise. I'm just weird Confused

It's a way of demonstrating some kind of superiority complex - turning up your nose at totally innocuous things and being 'shocked' that anyone could like it, and masking it by asking why

YANBU I hate it.

It's only on if I'm watching something.

I love sitting with no TV on, no music, just nothing. Until the kids start arguing then I have to put music on to drown them out.

LiviaDrusillaAugusta · 18/08/2016 17:50

rainbow Not just you - people making noise around me makes me stabby and yet I have the TV on Grin

SanityClause · 18/08/2016 17:50

DH turns the television on every morning to watch the financial news, and then buggers off, and leaves it.

I always turn it off, if I come down and no one is watching - it drives me batty.
