To not want to cut DS hair?

DS is three in October has beautiful fine golden curls. Dp wants to cut it before he's three but I think if it gets cut he will loose his lovely curls (which always get lots of nice comments when we're out).

I've said no please don't cut all his lovely baby curls off but dp has said he's going to have straight brown hair anyway and it needs tidying (we both have straight brown hair so he probably will)

But I would like to keep his 'baby' hair as long as possible because I think it's very cute.

Personally, I'd get it cut. It's going to get long and straggly soon if you don't.

I'd leave it my almost three yr olds is longer and curlier and I've no plan to.cut it soon as he likes it. Does you ds like his hair?

(Its not that I'm worried about losing the curls as I expect mine to keep his curls as mine is very curly and his dads is wavy)

I'd leave it - DS1 had a full head of gorgeous ringlets and they never came back after they were cut. I wished I'd waited!
DS2 had his ringlets until he was old enough to decide for himself Grin. I thought he might want them cut, but he chose to keep them for a while then had it cut when he was about 5 ish by which time they were nearly down to his bum!

Why on earth does your DH want to cut it before he is three? Is this like the Victorians putting little boys into their first trousers, or something? Are curls insufficiently boyish after a boy blows out his three candles? Hmm

My four year old was playing with an older friend of his today - a six year old boy who has never had his hair cut since birth. It is a fabulous brown waterfall and he rocks a variety of accessories.

It doesn't bother DS in the slightest, it's not I'm his face at all, doesn't get in his way or anything. It's never been cut this is almost three years of growth.

Loosing his curls is exactly what I'm afraid of. He will lose his curls and suddenly look much older. It's hard to tell from the photo but it looks quite straight at the roots. They aren't permanent curls they're his baby curls.

Dp is now in a massive strop because I got a bit teary eyed at the thought of cutting them off and them never coming back

I think it does looks a bit untidy and possibly even more with it longer, but he's 3 and fine for him to get away with it. He's a cute little boy Smile

comedywing I have no idea. He doesn't want it to get long and 'girly looking' which is fine by me but when it's dry it's barely on his collar. It is quite long when it's wet but only because it's not curly then

Aww. My DS has long blonde curly hair. He's had it cut a couple of times (short back and sides and it looks straight with a slight wave on the longer bits). He's always getting compliments however he is often mistaken for being girl despite his boys clothes, but he likes his hair and I love his hair so its not getting cut til he asks for it to be cut. As long as your DS likes it keep it! Smile

We didn't cut ds1 hair till he was 3 and half when it got straggly and he wouldn't have it brushed or washed. Before then it was shortish curls. He was bald for the first year and it grew so slowly that at 2 it was so thin and barely there. He went from looking like a 3 year old to looking like a 5 year old in a moment and DH almost cried. (he still maintains i did it without consulting him - which is not true)

DS2 is now 2 and has a mass of curls but they are thicker, so may be cut when he is 3, i am not sure. DS1 had a small elfin face so a crop actually looked really nice. But ds2 has a big round spud face like me and we don't really do short hair!

My little mans hair is like yours-straight at the roots. But everytime he's had it cut the curls come back once it gets to a certain length. So you never know he may have curly hair even after getting it cut once it grows again.

Oh my oh was like that for a bit but I keep saying why does it matter? What's wrong with girls? How will people thinking he is a girl at this age affect him? Etc etc
OH has long since stopped asking.

Sometimes i really mess his head up and scrunch the little ones hair in to curls as well.

ds lost his curls as well.....think cut his about 3ish - but that was only as they were starting to get tangly and he moaned about getting it washed so I would wait- he looks fab

His curls are lovely. I wouldn't cut until DS asks for it to be done.

I have conceded to getting the dry bits at the ends trimmed. I will definitely cry if/when he loses his curls though!

It's quite frizzy and tangly at the back, think I'll get them to leave the fringe bit alone though that's my favourite bit, DS doesn't care either way

IDK I do think it is a bit of a babyish style for his age. Not trying to be mean there btw I nearly cried when I got my son his first haircut 6 months ago but it had to be done, he looked like a hobo lol. But he is starting to look like a proper little boy now rather than a toddler iyswim and that I think your DP is right in thinking that it is starting to look a bit silly because his face is maturing and the style is that of a much younger child. Why not keep it a little long on top so he keeps his curls and just have shorter back and sides? That is what I've done. A number 4 on the back and sides and a trim with scissors on top. So he looks much tidier and more grown up but still has those lovely floppy bits on top.

I kept one of my DS's little curls. He only really had curls around his ears but looked so cute so I kept one in case they don't grow back. is pathetic

We didn't cut our DS hair til he was nearly 3, he also had blond curls but it was quite a bit longer than your son's by the time I conceded (because it was getting in his eyes). He didn't lose the curls after the cut - he has lost them as more hair grew in and his hair got thicker though - it still longish and wavy, a bit surfer-like! DS has never wanted his hair cut short, he knows how much nice attention it gets him - he was often mistaken for a girl as a pre-schooler but I always told him there's nothing insulting about that. He's only three, nothing wrong with baby curls, three still is a baby in my world!

Btw, I used johnsons leave in conditioner to ease the frizz, worked a treat

My dc have straight tops and fronts and curls round the back and sides, so we just trimmed the fringe from their eyes.

I think it's funny that so many dh's want the cut and think it looks girly. It was the exact opposite here - DH wanted him to just grow it forever.

I'm thinking something like a short back and sides as that is pretty much what it is now. The top is quite long with soft floppy curls, the side have short soft curls and the back is a frizzy mess. Hopefully the barber/hairdresser can tame it without loosing his baby curls

For the "frizzy mess" at the back (I know exactly what you mean, DS used to get that, even five mins after it'd been brushed) I've filled a spray bottle with water snd spray quite a bit of water on DS hair then brush with a tangle tamer brush or tangle teezer and he's left with beautiful ringlets and no more frizz.

Wow! I'm surprised about all of you not cutting hair until 3 years old or older! We had to cut my Ds' hair around 4 months! It was already below his shoulders and in his eyes (and annoying him). We cut it every 2 months or so now, and in that time again it gets annoying. However, although the roots are straight, and it looks straight when cut short, as others said, once it gets to a certain length the curls come back.

So it is not a given he will lose his curls. But do what you think is best (while I cry in my corner as to how expensive hair cutting is going to be here!)

If you put some conditioner in the spray bottle and give it a good shake before you use it, it will keep the frizz tamed for longer during the day.
