Hello! Mumsnet Jobs team here. We've noticed this thread is fairly old now, and some of the information is out of date. We've put together this article of advice, tips and tricks to start working from home. Alternatively, you can look at the work from home opportunities on Mumsnet Jobs. We hope this is helpful!

-------------

I don't know anyone who works from home in rl but I see it all the time on mumsnet.

If you work from home, what is your job?

Obviously not referring to sahp here!

ifherbum, I think audio description is fascinating but know little about it. Do you do live describing as well? How do you write the scripts? Are there sort of industry-standard templates/conventions?

SapphireStrange · 18/08/2016 10:17

Oops, sorry for multiple post!

LivingOnTheDancefloor · 18/08/2016 11:16

IT (programming).

90daychallenger · 18/08/2016 11:21

Academic. I work at home when I'm not teaching or in meetings.

I am very disciplined but it's taken a good three years to get into a routine and know what works for me and what doesn't.

blueshoes · 18/08/2016 13:07

Burningbridges, why do you hate it? Is it just the homeworking aspect or what you are doing?

giantbiscuit · 18/08/2016 13:45

missingmummy - how did you get into that?? I am a nurse and would LOVE to work from home - never imagined it would be possible though

TwentyCups · 18/08/2016 13:46

I used to work from home making sales calls. Had to go visit clients/prospects but other than that could work anywhere so long as I had a phone and laptop. This was in logistics.

KentishMama · 18/08/2016 14:17

Marketing / Ecommerce. Big US firm. I compress my full time hours into 4 agonizingly long days and work one of them from home.

AbelMancwitch · 18/08/2016 14:53

Writer/Editor. There are perks (like being able to look a state, not commuting, having lunch in the garden etc) but I do feel like I am turning into a slightly insane hermit. And people tend to think I'm "not really working" so will call or turn up for a couple of hours. And then I start thinking that and get drawn into procrastinating/cleaning the bathroom etc. Hmm

I work for the Ministry of Defence. I have an office base, but, with reductions in actual desks in recent years, we are encouraged to work from other offices/home when we can. I do about 2 days at home and 1 day elsewhere per week. The other two are in my office with the rest of my team.

ConfusedintheNorth · 18/08/2016 16:04

Professional Tarot Reader, and Tarot Teacher training professional readers... prob not for everyone but it works for me!

EUnamechange · 18/08/2016 16:08

International relations. Many of my colleagues work from home too - or we're out and about at meetings/travel. We are expected to work all sorts of hours, with strangely timed video-conferences due to timezone differences.

You have to be very disciplined. I don't use social media during the day, except for those accounts I need to use professionally. I always end up working many extra hours (unpaid), but at least I have some flexibility.

DH also works from home sometimes - as a senior engineering manager. He works with teams all over the world, so also has strange timezones to contend with.

Pollaidh · 18/08/2016 16:10

And yes, like user1471524661 due to budget cuts we don't actually have many desks at the central offices, so are strongly encouraged not to go in. When I do go it is to make connections and for meetings - there is a risk you can become very isolated.

MsStricty · 18/08/2016 16:15

ConfusedintheNorth - I'm a tarot reader and teacher too. We are a rare breed here :)

VeryFoolishFay · 18/08/2016 16:17

Area Organiser for a charity retailer. Mostly at home or driving round my lovely local area. Love it!

Canklesofglitter · 18/08/2016 16:17

I manage services all over the country for a national charity. I work FT from home. You do need to be disciplined and not be on MN in working hours Grin

Gingercat86 · 18/08/2016 16:18

I work in sales & purchasing for an IT company I work 3 days in the office & 2 remotely from home.

ElodieS · 18/08/2016 16:20

Lawyer - try to work from home one day a week, but depends on what I'm doing.

ReadyToSignOff · 18/08/2016 16:21

Tutor

chocaholic73 · 18/08/2016 16:28

Clerk to school governors. Work from home, apart from going to meetings.

Xocaraic · 18/08/2016 16:29

I work as a Due Diligence officer for multinational consulting company. The geography I work with is not where I live so I work from home 99.9% of the time. I make trips to me closest office only to get things like an upgrade to my laptop or if I have to have executive health screening etc.
You have to be disciplined and be flexible when required.

MoogBoov · 18/08/2016 16:35
