Hello! Mumsnet Jobs team here. We've noticed this thread is fairly old now, and some of the information is out of date. We've put together this article of advice, tips and tricks to start working from home. Alternatively, you can look at the work from home opportunities on Mumsnet Jobs. We hope this is helpful!

-------------

I don't know anyone who works from home in rl but I see it all the time on mumsnet.

If you work from home, what is your job?

Obviously not referring to sahp here!

I am a university lecturer and I work from home a lot when I haven't got meetings/teaching. I get more done.

QuiteQuietly · 18/08/2016 16:42

I sell books online. And also am carer for DH (but I wouldn't recommend that one).

What a great thread! I'd love to find a WFH job.

SharonBottsPoundOfGrapes · 18/08/2016 17:26

I've done phone sex. I was surprisingly good at it. Blush

Media relations. Two days at home, three in the office.

Wfh has improved my work/life balance 100% and I'd hate to go to working in an office full time.

I get to do the school run twice a week and keep on top of the house stuff too but I'm lucky in that I have a brilliant manager.

In 10 years time I can see agile working as the norm as it makes financial sense for many companies. It costs my organisation £5k per employee a year to work at Hq in rent alone.

Scientist in pharmaceutical industry. Work 2 days from home; rest in office. Would rather be in the office as can get lonely at home but works well for picking up and bringing DS to school/afterschool club. DH does 3 days at home writing software. I have plenty of colleagues who work at home full time doing same as me or other related jobs e.g. medical writing, pharmacovigilance, clinical trial associate etc.

Iamaslummymummy · 18/08/2016 18:46

Dh is a call centre agent wfh. Major clients that you'd never expect had their call centre agents sitting in their spare room!

Liking the phone sex and then the vicar posting. Quite a contrast there. My type of business law is mostly done by email so it's ideal for doing from home and you're just in effect selling your brain. I do quite a bit of legal writing too which is also easy to do from home and you just sit and type. i do think people need after they qualify as solicitor barrister to spend at least 5 - 7 years practising to get enough experience to be able competently to work for themselves in law. A lot of this work you learn by years of experience and supervision by other good lawyers. However once you have that experience it works well from home in quite a few different areas of law.

throwingpebbles · 18/08/2016 19:12

Solicitor. I work flexible hours and also get to (within reason) pick and choose when and where I work (office/home, day/evenings when kids in bed). The reality is sometimes I have to be in the office, and I do prefer to work in the office, but being able to do v short days then the rest when the kids are in bed is great, as is being able to decide to work from home if traffic bad/ want to concentrate.
I think the flexible working hours is far more beneficial than flexibility in location though, I feel like my own boss despite having a secure job

throwingpebbles · 18/08/2016 19:16

ffs at "jamberry consultant" that's not a job it's being a dupe in a pyramid scheme

Angry Angry Angry Angry Angry

Nomes802 · 18/08/2016 19:29

Please don't swear at me throwing pebbles. I have a successful business and work with Jamberry too. I am not naive I did my research, I work..I get paid.

You are entitled to your opinion of course, but saddened you would dismiss me and lots of other mums making a living so quickly.

MsStricty · 18/08/2016 19:44

I think it's because you used this thread as an advertising opportunity, Nomes, which felt a little heavy-handed.

BertrandRussell · 18/08/2016 19:50

Making a living from MLM?

I think not.

PuntCuffin · 18/08/2016 19:56

Another pharmaceutical industry scientist here. Full time from home as none of my team are UK based although I do go into the office occasionally to see friends/colleagues. But because of time differences, being home based works well - early morning calls with Australia, and evenings with US. I flex round when I am needed and take time for my kids. Because I am willing to work odd hours, no one minds if I take time out for a run or whatever during office hours.
But I did have to do a long degree course and have been in this role for a number of years to get to this point.

LunaLoveg00d · 18/08/2016 20:00

I think it's because you used this thread as an advertising opportunity, Nomes, which felt a little heavy-handed.

Indeed - 247 posts of people saying "I do X, Y or Z" without LINKING TO ANYTHING, and then the bloody MLM bots pop up with their shite about how a-may-zing their business is and how much money they are making. Oh, and here's the link.

You are not a "Jamberry Consultant". You flog overpriced nail stickers. And don't get me started on the Forever people who instead of calling themselves self-employed sales reps say they are "business owners" or "gold level managers". It's all bollocks.

LRDtheFeministDragon · 18/08/2016 20:01

Reported the spam.

Daft, isn't it? If they made any money from this stuff they wouldn't need to spam MN threads, would they? If anything would persuade me to steer clear, it's that sort of desperation.
