Another Wedding Favors Thread...

WIBU to offer mason jar- style glasses as wedding favours?

I haven't been to many weddings and I'm new to all this so I don't know the etiquette surrounding favors. It's going to be a pretty relaxed wedding.

My idea is to fill them with Pimm's and lemonade for just after the reception but then stick a tag on them telling people they can take them home with them at the end of the day as a wedding favour?

I can't afford to do the Pimm's idea and wedding favors so it's one or the other, does anyone foresee issues with this?

I should add they'll be tarted up with hessian ribbon etc to make them look suitably weddingish before the Pimms!

I would love the pimms but probably wouldn't take the jar home as it wouldn't fit in my purse.

But I'm not bothered about wedding favours anyway, to me they can easily be done away with entirely

No YANBU.

You are the bride, and so no choice WBU. And it would be downright curmudgeonly of your guests to pass any form of adverse comment.

I would however assume they were a job lot hired from caterers for the occasion. Even with a tag saying 'you can take these home' I probably wouldn't because I prefer drinking from glasses, not screw top jars.

(BTW, there's a 'Wedding' topic somewhere, which might be a better home for a thread where you want ideas/opinions, rather than just asking if your choice IBU)

Yes I would love the pimms but I wouldn't really want to take a sticky glass home with me!

I'd much prefer a glass of pimms to any wedding favour though

They are a bit big and bulky to be taking home in a handbag. So I wouldn't be too bothered tbh. I guess a lot of people will leave them behind. Also you can probably get them cheaper from somewhere like Home Bargins.

I don't think many people will take them home to be honest as they can't fit them in handbags and won't remember at the end of the night. Your venue might also move them if they rearrange tables for the evening do (I've 'lost' favours I intended to take that way before).
It's a lovely idea but you'll probably just end up with most of them left over.

OP, as someone who is a veteran of a million weddings on several continents, I can tell you that people seldom notice wedding favours and almost never take them home, particularly when it involves shoving something bulky/sticky/heavy into an evening bag at mealtime, carting it around the rest of the evening, decanting it into some other bag at a hotel etc etc.

If you feel the need to have favours - which are in no way compulsory! - just give people something edible that they can nibble at the wedding, and that you won't feel crushed about when you discover them abandoned and smooshed up underfoot afterwards.

If I was presented with a jam jar of pimms, I would look like this Hmm and think the bride had spent too long on Pinterest. I wouldn't take it home as it would not fit in my bag.

I have no idea why people think they are a good idea at all.

You really don't need to do favours at all. Nobody cares about them, and half of them get left behind as women only have little clutch handbags so no space!

The best favours I've ever seen were things that were consumed at the wedding - so small bottles of spirits or small packs of chocolates, have your caterers put them out at the table settings and people will eat and drink them.

But tbh you're better off just adding your favours budget to the general budget and having more drinks etc

Don't bother with favours, really. Spend the money on something people will actually appreciate (or don't spend it!)

I echo the previous posters - few people are going to want/remember to take a large sticky glass home. In fact mine would still be full of Pimms as I hate the stuff!

I'd save myself the bother and just serve Pimm's in ordinary glasses. You may then have funds for favours if you still want to do them. At the last wedding we went to, the favours were iced biscuits following the wedding theme. I was glad of it as the staff serving canapes with the drinks before the meal were useless and kept going to the few people nearest the door of the room we were in. By the time we sat down I was so hungry I ate the biscuit before the meal was served.

The option will be Pimms and lemonade or scrumpy, then apple juice mixed with lemonade for none drinkers :)

Haha YES to the Pinterest comment, we're totally DIY'ing the wedding on the cheap so I'm constantly on that bloody site!

I may change the tag to say "feel free to keep the glass!" instead so it's take it or leave it. If I'm left with loads I can job lot them on ebay or keep them for family parties :)

Majority of weddings I've been to in my 42 years (and there have been a lot) didn't have "favours" - they seem to have crept in recently (which makes me wonder if they have come across from America like baby showers). I'd say don't bother, as when they have happened, they've been a faff for all concerned and often left at the end of the night.

Best thing at a recent wedding - a table with a huge array of jars of sweets with bags and scoops so people could do their own pick n mix. Genius, everyone loved it.

You can get these with a screw lid and a straw in poundland or home bargains. Do not spend £6 each on something your guests may or may not take home.
If you like them and think that your guests would, then YANBU. Your wedding, your choice.

If you really want to do favours (and I've been to 50+ weddings and only seen them once) little tubes of lovehearts are good.

StillDrSethHazlittMD we have one of those in the family from a previous wedding, it looks like a candyfloss cart :) We'll be borrowing it for during the downtime while photos are being taken and stuff just before dinner instead of expensive canopes (cannot believe how much they charge for those!!). Thinking of putting homemade savory snacks on it too like mini scotch eggs because dinner is afternoon tea and I think everyone will be massively strung out on sugar by then!

In the last twenty years of weddings I've been to I'm the only person who did wedding favours Grin and that's only because I was brought up in a country where it's practically compulsary.

I wouldn't do the jars,I don't think people will want to take them home.

My wedding favours were hand made big ginger biscuits hearts iced with the word love made by a friends daughter they disappeared very quickly

We did mugs as our wedding favours (and tied luggage labels on them for the place settings). Nobody complained about having to take them home - and they all went home with people - and (nearly) four years on I still spot them being used in photos/when I visit people.

Instead of favours we made a donation to a charity related to my late mother-in-law and printed that information on the back of people's place cards. That went down pretty well.

If you're crafty and would enjoy making the jar favours though then go for it!

still no lids though. You can get cheaper and better (easier to put in bag to take home if lidded).
