I have a very ordinary, English-of-Greek-origin name. Spelled in the traditional way, couldn't e simpler, really.
For over twenty years, ILs have mispronounced it. For twenty years, I and my husband have periodically corrected them. Not a huge thing, granted but it grates every time they say it wrongly.

AIBU to slightly mispronounce their names just a little, e.g. Sarah becomes Sorah, Jim becomes Jom? Childish, I know, but it is pretty much the only thing I have asked of them in twenty years! Other family members ask for and receive special food despite having no real grounds for this or meals served at a particular time despite having no children. I'd just like them to say my name without me mentally wincing!

I know, pike, I despair!

Sativa · 10/08/2016 14:54

How does everyone pronounce Steven ? Ste-VEN, Ste-VIN, or just plain Steven......

If you can pronounce this, you can pronounce Helen in the correct way. The Hellin thing grates on me so badly.

I agree with a previous poster who said it rhymes with melon. Helen Melon was always a common phrase when I was a child. Or do we say melin ? Confused

I have no issue if someone's accent prevents them from pronouncing a name correctly.

It's the people who can say it but choose not to!

Mummyoflittledragon · 10/08/2016 15:39

Cecily. Rodney - very good Grin

Mummyoflittledragon · 10/08/2016 15:41

private. Switching to Julie after 3 mails could be a simple human error or even autocorrect. Not necessarily personal.

No I'm talking about me. Jeanne is not my fucking name.

Mummyoflittledragon · 10/08/2016 16:03

Mmmm but I wasn't very clear was I!! I meant my in laws.

CecilyP · 10/08/2016 16:06

I think the Steven thing is a good idea. While I have heard quite a few people say Hellin, I don't think I have heard anyone say Stevin.

Yab a bit u. If it's an accent thing you really need to let it go.

DS' name is pronounced quite differently up north and down south. Therefore when his teachers read it they think it's pronounced one way. When they meet me and I use his name it baffles them. Bless them they have tried to pronounce it my way, or they've asked, but TBH it doesn't matter. DS will probably pronounce it their way too, does that mean I'm at fault?

if they spell it wrong however, there's hell to pay

Outnumb3red · 10/08/2016 16:44

I'm Scottish (west coast) I struggle to say Helen. It comes out as Helin

Outnumb3red · 10/08/2016 16:45

I would also say Steven as Stee-vin

MrsJoeyMaynard · 10/08/2016 16:47

I pronounce the endings of Helen and Steven the same way.

And Steven rhymes with even.

PerspicaciaTick · 10/08/2016 16:51

The one thing about the Archers that has grated on me for the last few decades is the way the call Helen, Hellin. I always say Hellun. And I am right Wink.

And Stephen/Steven is Steevun.

Anonymouses · 10/08/2016 16:53

I'm a helen. If someone called me hell in I would be super pissed and also wince. It's pronounced how it is spelt ffs hell-en. I have never met a helen who pronounces it like that. YADNBU

CecilyP · 10/08/2016 16:56

Stephen rhymes with even - can't think of anything else. I pronounce the ends of Steven and Helen the same.
