Baby gift

A very close mate bought my son a lovely "welcome to the world"'gift. I took it back to the shop (without gift receipt) to change it for a bigger size as my Ds is massive and it doesn't fit. Turns out the gift is currently worth 79p as it was 2015 stock and I can't get a bigger size as its long been discontinued. Aibu to feel a bit put out about this? It's a very good mate, we were bridesmaids at each other's weddings are both godmothers to each other's first children see loads of each other etc etc....I'm not being ungrateful but it just seems a bit tight, just wondered whether others would feel the same!!

Erm, I guess you could be put out but you don't know when it was purchased? Although 79p is exceedingly cheap...

Perhaps it is just from her present drawer and she's been too busy to buy anything new?

I think what happened is that she spotted it some time ago and bought it in anticipation. It would be very unusual for an item to be 79p on the shop floor, I would have thought. But it does sometimes come up as a v. cheap exchange price if there is a long time between purchase and return. I once bought a top in a high street store, left it at the back of the wardrobe and forgot about it. When I tried to return it (I'd lost the receipt) I was told it was worth 99p. Cost a hell of a lot more than that to buy!

Agree with pps. She probably already had it or something. Also, you've no idea what her financial situation is like either. She didn't have to get you a gift at all.

You said it was a lovely gift, why does knowing it's retail value suddenly diminish it's sentimental value to you?

You liked it before you knew the price so what's the issue? Maybe she does bulk buying of gifts and just had this to give you.

The price wouldn't bother me but I wouldn't have ever known as wouldn't dream of returning an item to a shop without a receipt in the first place.

I would have just popped it in the charity bank or passed onto a friend.

You sound very ungrateful, how much would you deem reasonable for her to spend?

I'd say it's from a present drawer, I buy baby stuff and put it away for friends for when babies arrive, if I tried to return some of my stuff they'd probably be worthless, doesn't mean I didn't pay £10/20 for it originally.
Also you say it's lovely so I suppose you would have continued to do so had you not found out the price.
I've also found some great baby bargains and got some wonderful new baby gifts, some sales are fab. I once got a beautiful £25 newborn outfit for £2!

Thanks for the views, I have no problem with present drawers etc and its not the 79p aspect that bothers me it's just I would have thought that given that I'm one of her closest friends I would have been promoted from present drawer status and she would have put a bit more thought into it!

If an item is no longer in stock there is no receipt and someone returns it, the shop just put an arbitrary price on it for the purposes of the return. It will never have been on actual sale at that price but that is what they value it at now. In Marks it is often about that amount. Your friend probably saw that item when she found out you were pregnant and paid full price for it because she liked it and thought you would too and kept it for the birth.

Meh. I'm really organised and buy things well in advance but plenty of thought goes into them. I have all the birthdays for the rest of the year sorted and most of Christmas bought I have a spreadsheet

I'm with you OP. My BF bought my baby a £4 legging outfit from peacocks and I still haven't forgiven her. Nothing worse than a tight arse

A bit more thought or....spent a bit more money? You obviously thought the present was ok before you knew the price as you went to exchange it for the same item in a bigger size.

YABU to think that "better" friends should spend more money on you than others. You've just had a baby.
And you're flapping about a 78p gift?

One of my closest friends was really hoping she had a girl, someone bought my baby girl a beautiful outfit, really girly but very special and she commented that she loved it. I bought her one in case she had a girl. She did and she was thrilled with the gift after the birth. Had she returned it at that time then it would have been on sale but I paid £25 for it. I would feel terrible if she thought I hadn't put the effort in as I had done it knowing she'd love it. If she had had a boy, the next person
I knew who had a girl would have had it as a gift instead and hopefully they would have loved it as we did. I would hope they also wouldn't think of me as tight. I am sure your friend has put thought into it, try not to feel sad about this.

I got a gift from m and s which was too small. The price was still on all items of clothing and total price was £46. I took it back to exchange and was told it was bow worth £3.20. For a dress, Cardigan, tights, two pairs of those weird baby knickers and shoes. I said I would just keep it. I've never seen anything that cheap in the markies sale.

I've also had the same experience as Littleelffriend - my sister bought me a top from next for about £15 and when I went to return it a few weeks later they would only give me a £2 refund. Sometimes shops really knock down the prices. You will never know what your friend paid for the item unless you ask her (please don't!)
