Two sons same name

I'm not going to give too much detail but a neighbour has just told me both his sons are called (I'm name changing them) Bob Smith. He was married twice so first Bob is son to first wife and he's ten years older than second Bob son to the second wife. Both are alive and in contact.

Is this not a bit strange and unfair to the kids (now grown men)? I can't imagine growing up as Bob1 and feeling replaced completely by Bob2

I have a younger half sister and I would have been absolutely LIVID if my dads 2nd wife named her the same as my name!

Likewise if my ex has another child and names that child the same name as our son I will be furious, I don't think I'd be able to contain my anger - it's making me feel ragey just thinking about it.

Bloopbleep · 06/08/2016 10:47

I don't think derivatives of the same name are quite the same as actually the same name.

Or Puff Daddy - real name Sean Jean Combs. He evencalled his clothing range Sean John. Effectively the same name twice.

LikeDylanInTheMovies · 06/08/2016 10:57

Sorry, Sean John Combs but the point still stands!

I know of sisters called Alice and Alex (andra) and their mum seemed to have no idea that might be considered a bit odd.

WaffleOverload · 06/08/2016 11:57

I met a woman once with two children. A girl called Antonia and a boy called Antony. Their father was Tony.

I thought that was a little odd

StrandedStarfish · 06/08/2016 17:47

I had friends named Brian and Pauline, who named their children Pauline and Brian. They went on to have the surprise of twins, who they named Briony and Paul.

falange · 06/08/2016 18:07

I used to know someone called Debbie who had a sister called Deborah.

bubblegurl252 · 06/08/2016 18:17

I'd find the same names thing weird but not similar names.
Like I know a family who's tree (generational siblings) goes
Monique mark
Jennifer Jonathan
Sophie Samuel

This thread reminds me of the bbq scene in 'My Big Fat Greek Wedding'!

carabos · 06/08/2016 18:49

Grin at Debbie and Deborah - I mean, honestly, that takes the biscuit!

BikeRunSki · 06/08/2016 19:02

I know siblings Alistair and Alison.

justlliloleme · 06/08/2016 19:29

There's a old guy who goes in our local who's been married 5 times (we call him Henry VIII for a laugh), he's currently (re)married to wife no.1 😂
Anyway, he's got two daughters with the same name, when we asked why he said 'we'll I left the chosing of the names to the wives and they must have liked the same name'. 😂😂

Trills · 06/08/2016 19:34

I was going to mention Elizabeth Woodville, who had two sons called Richard - one with her first husband and one with Edward IV - the second was the younger of the Princes In The Tower.

It was also her dad's name.

swampytiggaa · 06/08/2016 19:50

My mom has a neighbour with children called Christopher and Christine both known as Chris. Which is odd.

Luie54 · 06/08/2016 20:21

Liam Gallagher is actually William btw.

Joskar · 06/08/2016 23:48

I know a family of five boys and three of them have the same name because they were named for different people. There's a Donald Iain, a Donald Calum and a John Donald. It's not common where I'm from but not so unusual as to cause comment. I should say also that Iain and John are actually the same name so there's another level of crazy. They are all under thirty so not even just a generation thing.

robinia · 07/08/2016 02:23

Roger Federer has twin boys, Leo and Lenny Hmm

SomeDaysIDontGiveAMonkeys · 07/08/2016 02:52

Exit. I never knew that either ConfusedConfused

2coldinscotland · 07/08/2016 06:46

Liam is derived from William & Nathan is a shortened version of Nathaniel. I know of two brothers called James & Jamie , which i thought was too similar , must've liked how it sounded.

StampQueen12 · 07/08/2016 08:29

I'very got two sisters called Jenny (name changed) My dad had a daughter when he was 19 who was originally called Emma. She was then adopted. He then met my mum 5 years layer and had me and my sister when he was in his thirties. Older Jenny got in touch recently, it's no big deal.

Shoutymomma · 07/08/2016 08:56

I've been wondering if, liking a name a lot, someone might give it to their child as a middle name/s as well, like Fred Fred Smith or Doris Doris Doris Walker? Boutros Boutros Ghali springs to mind.

I do like to think that Ra Ra Rasputin was named after a 1980s skirt.

geekaMaxima · 07/08/2016 09:38

Liam is derived from William

Err, no. It's not. Discussed at length earlier in the thread

It's not that William is the "real" name and Liam is "only" a derivative. Both names are independent derivatives of a much older German (Frankish) name.

DiscoMoo · 07/08/2016 10:11

My half brother has Andrew as a middle name. He has 2 half brothers (same dad) called Andy and Andrew. The dad has 4 names, none of which are Andrew.

ShelaghTurner · 07/08/2016 10:25

DH comes from one of those families where the first born son has the same name and they go by their middle name. So GFIL was Brian Peter, FIL Brian George, DH Brian John (names have been changed!). At our wedding the priest insisted on using official names and so I ended up saying "I Shelagh take thee Brian..." and wondering who the fuck Brian was. It felt weird.

And the father of my oldest friend (let's call him Duncan) looked into his family tree and found that his father had previously had a son, Duncan, with another woman and so the two Duncan's were half brothers.
