Two sons same name

I'm not going to give too much detail but a neighbour has just told me both his sons are called (I'm name changing them) Bob Smith. He was married twice so first Bob is son to first wife and he's ten years older than second Bob son to the second wife. Both are alive and in contact.

Is this not a bit strange and unfair to the kids (now grown men)? I can't imagine growing up as Bob1 and feeling replaced completely by Bob2

Hedda no it is not, Liam is Liam (DH is an Irish one too)

But it originates as a shortened form or Uilliam (William), no matter that it is NOW used as a name on its own.
Jack still came from John, Harry from Henry, Alfie from Alfred, no matter how many people use them as names in their own right, it doesn't change where the name comes from.

NeedAnotherGlass · 05/08/2016 15:14

I know a pair of twins called: Ann-Marie & Marie-Ann

And a set of 3 sisters called: Melanie, Melissa & Melinda

squoosh · 05/08/2016 15:24

But it originates as a shortened form or Uilliam (William)

Such an Anglocentric view! Yes they're both forms of Wilhelm but Uilliam is a separate name from William. Why do some people think that the English version of a name is the true version? So irritating.

geekaMaxima · 05/08/2016 15:26

Google it honestly Liam is a derivitive(sp) of William it is a stand alone name obviously but it does come from William

Nope, no, not true. As SpringerS already said, Liam / Uilliam is an Irish derivative of German (Frankish) Willahelm, just like Willian is an English derivative of German (Frankish) Willahelm.

Liam is often described as "Irish for" William, but it's just as (in)accurate to say William is English for Liam. Neither comes from the other Smile

In Ireland, using Liam as an abbreviation for William is virtually unknown. People in Ireland do sometimes use (or get called by) the Irish forms of their names, though, especially informally. I know a James whose family often calls him Seámus or Sé (Shay), a Máire (Maura) whose birth cert actually says Mary, etc. At a guess, that's what was happening with Liam Gallagher and his Irish family - using the Irish-language form of the name rather than an abbreviation.

GeorgiePeachie · 05/08/2016 15:26

Shall we not base our historical knowledge on a Phillipa Gregory novel...?

But yeah, he did have an illegitimate son Henry. and a ton of still borns but its not really the same as having two that grow up together.

but that's not the case here either. fun historical tangents though!

ThumbWitchesAbroad · 05/08/2016 15:28

I find that sort of thing somewhat disturbing, in the same way that I find people using the names of a previously deceased child again for a living one disturbing. It feels like they're trying to replace the "lost" one with a new version. :(

My MIL did this. Her first son was stillborn so she then used his names again for her second born son. So BIL has the exact same names as his dead brother. I can't imagine being that stuck on a name that I'd need to use it again if it didn't work out the first time for whatever reason!

DerelictMyBalls · 05/08/2016 15:29

My friends, after helping an aged relative out, now have two dogs called Felix.

This is very silly indeed.

Felix is a cat's name. You can't have a dog called Felix.

sleepwhatsleep · 05/08/2016 15:34

A friend told me she works with someone who has 4 children all with the same name! Apparently they liked this one name and couldn't pick another one and had 4 kids of the same gender.

I guess if nothing else its easy to call the kids down for tea?

MrsJayy · 05/08/2016 15:40

Liam is getting everybody het up today Grin

ExitPursuedByABear · 05/08/2016 15:41

I knew sisters called Hannah and Annie.

I have posted that sentence millions of times on here so this is clearly a recurring topic.

sparechange · 05/08/2016 15:42

My son was stillborn
If I have another, he will be given the same name. We aren't fixated, it's a lovely name with family significance on both sides, and above all, we love it and we love the idea of being able to call a happy, healthy boy by that name just as we spent months dreaming of being able to do

Nice to hear that makes me 'disturbing' though Sad

ChipsandGuac · 05/08/2016 15:43

Alexander Hamilton and his wife called their 8th child Phillip after their eldest child, Phillip, was killed in a duel. Hurrah for learning American history via Broadway musicals!

ChipsandGuac · 05/08/2016 15:44

Exit I know a Hannah and Annie sibling set too!

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 05/08/2016 15:44

I have a friend who is known as Liam but his full name is William.

squoosh · 05/08/2016 15:44

Liam is getting everybody het up today

Especially Noel Gallagher. He and Liam have had a new falling out apparently. Their poor mother must wish they'd just shut the fuck up!

HoratioNightboy · 05/08/2016 15:47

Felix is a cat's name. You can't have a dog called Felix.

I have a cat called Pluto - is that allowed? Grin

MamaLazarou · 05/08/2016 15:48

I used to know twins, Louise and Elouise.

GoldPlatedBacon · 05/08/2016 15:48

I wish I never mentioned Billy/Liam /William 😵

The other posts have reminded me that I was at school with twins called Nicholas and Nicole.

BlueLeopard · 05/08/2016 15:51

Henry VIII had 3 sons called Henry to Catherine of Aragon. One died at two months and the other two were stillborn or died at birth. Two other still born daughters and Mary were their other children. And he had Henry Fitzroy.

So four sons called Henry.

ExitPursuedByABear · 05/08/2016 15:52

No I'm so glad you did.

DD's current squeeze is a Liam.

MrsJayy · 05/08/2016 15:54

I worked in a nursery years ago twins Holly and Robyn. (Dec birthdays)

BapsOfSteel · 05/08/2016 15:55

We spent ages debating ds being a 'Liam' or a 'William' (nickname Liam)

MrsJayy · 05/08/2016 15:55

Gold Billy and Liam is the same name

squoosh · 05/08/2016 15:57

Argh, I'm getting annoyed at people thinking Liam is just a nickname for William rather than a name in its own right.

Lovelyideas · 05/08/2016 15:59

"OMG - It has never ever ever occurred to me that Liam could be short for William.

"

awww, gentle rofls all round xx
