Two sons same name

I'm not going to give too much detail but a neighbour has just told me both his sons are called (I'm name changing them) Bob Smith. He was married twice so first Bob is son to first wife and he's ten years older than second Bob son to the second wife. Both are alive and in contact.

Is this not a bit strange and unfair to the kids (now grown men)? I can't imagine growing up as Bob1 and feeling replaced completely by Bob2

I've met a brother and sister called Henry and Hetty. Not sure if Hetty was short for Henrietta or if she was just a Hetty.

I love this thread, this is the reason I still come back to MN after 10 years even though it drives me mad Wink

I also know a man called Trevor who's dad remarried and called his son Trevor. Why anyone would call any child Trevor is a whole other thread!

MrsJayy · 07/08/2016 11:36

Hetty and Henry is quite cute pity its a pair of hoover names 😀

TroysMammy · 07/08/2016 11:51

Hygellig like the hoovers Grin

I thought calling two sisters Alexandra and Sacha was odd.
A matriarch named Jane with 6 children decreed that all granddaughters should have the middle name Jane, and they did! Grandsons had to have James as being the male equivalent. Needless to say this did not go on to the next generation!

candykane25 · 07/08/2016 12:23

I know of two sons in same family called Herbert and Albert, both shortened to Bert. No one in the family thinks it's odd. I think it's a little odd. But at least their names aren't actually the same.

Loving this thread!

I know an Andrew whose sister is Andrea. I thought that was odd enough until reading all the earlier comments.

I also knew an older couple called Harry and Rose. Their children were also Harry and Rose (egomania in my books) known as Little Harry and Little Rose even though they were in their mid 40s. 😳

My father in law was one of 13 children. He was Patrick and had a sister Patricia. Also Joseph and Josephine, Christopher and Christina. I guess his mum was too busy to research names!

Hygellig · 08/08/2016 14:24

Oh yes I wonder if their parents named them after hoovers. Very odd.
Not the same thing but I also know a married couple called Pat and Tricia which I think is quite cool.

MrsJayy · 08/08/2016 14:33

Oh i met a couple on a campsite the other year pat and pat 😂

OlennasWimple · 08/08/2016 14:41

I know an Elizabeth who called her daughter Isobel without realizing it's the same name..

I also know a father and son called Steven and Stephen - no idea why you would change the spelling between generations in this way Confused

Presumably someone upthread has said that in Ireland Liam is the Catholic form of William, Billy the Protestant?

OlennasWimple · 08/08/2016 14:46

If I ever had two female kittens to name (pets being the place to use favourite but generally unsuitable babes, IMHO), they would be Erica and Heather

Jeffrey Archer was the second child born to his parents. The first was given up for adoption but was also called Jeffrey (he now uses the name David). I've always thought it rough to be named after a lost, older sibling: it screams "replacement child" loud and clear

Cherylene · 08/08/2016 15:05

Liam is derived from William & Nathan is a shortened version of Nathaniel

No - Nathan the prophet was Solomon's brother and around long before Nathaniel the apostle. Wink

OlennasWimple · 08/08/2016 15:23

I've always thought Nathaniel came about as a compromise between a parent who wanted Nathan and one who wanted Daniel Grin

Maybe it did Wink

I also knew an older couple called Harry and Rose. Their children were also Harry and Rose

I know a similar couple.
Except they have two boys, but the mother has a second name that is typically male and they used it on one of the boys.
They are all a bit bonkers anyway.
