Two sons same name

I'm not going to give too much detail but a neighbour has just told me both his sons are called (I'm name changing them) Bob Smith. He was married twice so first Bob is son to first wife and he's ten years older than second Bob son to the second wife. Both are alive and in contact.

Is this not a bit strange and unfair to the kids (now grown men)? I can't imagine growing up as Bob1 and feeling replaced completely by Bob2

Errrr....Sanity - Henry VIII only had one son called Henry....

Men do have sons with women other than their wives Wink

EssentialHummus · 05/08/2016 13:04

I genuinely contemplated calling my sons Alexander and Alexei, so I can see how this happens!

Lweji · 05/08/2016 13:04

My grandparents did that, but only because the second was born after the first one with the same name died. Still weird, though.

5moreminutes · 05/08/2016 13:04

I know a lady with a name that can be adapted slightly by adding or removing a vowel (for example Helena / Helen, though that isn't her name). She has an adult daughter and 3 late teen down to primary aged sons from her first marriage and a toddler daughter from her second marriage.

Both her daughters are named after her! Just that one of them is Helen and one Helena... (not real name but same pattern)!

I have never asked how they feel about it, or whether there is some reason for it, I see her several times a week and small talk but don't know her well enough to ask that...

MrsJayy · 05/08/2016 13:05

Google it honestly Liam is a derivitive(sp) of William it is a stand alone name obviously but it does come from William

Bogeyface · 05/08/2016 13:05

John Paston (lived in the 1400's) named his eldest son John II and then his second son John III, and that was considered weird then!

Smacks of laziness to me in the case of your neighbour.

BalloonSlayer · 05/08/2016 13:06

Liam Gallagher's name is William.

GoldPlatedBacon · 05/08/2016 13:07

Liam Gallagher is a William, he's also of Irish descent -didn't realise I was going to send this thread on a tangent!--

Feckitall · 05/08/2016 13:07

DHFecks brother was called lets say 'Tom' , DH, his older DB and 'Tom' were brought up outside the family..their DM remarried and called one of her subsequent sons 'Tom' too...
There is a whole thread that could run on them JK eat your heart out

SanityClause · 05/08/2016 13:09

I thought he was, Balloon.

Apparently he had Henry's red hair, and I believe Anne Boleyn adopted him, as a sort of back up plan.

Once she fell out of favour, so did the other Boleyns.

But I'm happy to accept that he may not have been Henry VIII's son, which leaves 3 sons of Henry VIII who were documented as being acknowledged by Henry VIII, and named Henry.

OhFuds · 05/08/2016 13:12

I know a William but he goes by the name Liam.

There is also a family in my area where the dad is James, Ds1 is James, Ds2 is Jamie and Ds3 is Jay Confused

CodyKing · 05/08/2016 13:13

It was common a few years ago to keep family names going - GF John son John nephew John out John your John!

More modern to keep names separate -

My cousins little girl is an Isabel which was on my list but she had her first - never met her - never likely too, but still couldn't use it!! So to name both sins Bob is rubbing!!

MrsJayy · 05/08/2016 13:13

If they have a ds4 bet he will be Jj Grin

MrsMac2014 · 05/08/2016 13:14

I stand corrected, never heard that before. Sorry MrsJayy
every day's a school day, even summer holidays x

marcopront · 05/08/2016 13:15

Where is he from? My ex is from Kenya and in his culture the eldest son is named after the father's father, eldest daughter after the father's mother. Then they start using the mother's parents and then father's uncle etc.
My DD and her half sister should have the same name as it is the first child in each relationship. We only used the middle name and he has done the same with his new partner but theoretically he could have multiple children all with the same names and their cousins would also have the same names.

MrsJayy · 05/08/2016 13:16

My mums generation they were all named after parents Aunts/uncles cant get moving in my family for williams and Billys no Liams though

SweatyBettyHelp · 05/08/2016 13:16

Agree that Liam is a form of William.
I know siblings Harriet and Henry which given Harriet is the female version of Henry is really odd I find- think George Forman also had a Georgia amongst his collective of son George(s)

MrsJayy · 05/08/2016 13:16

Thats awrite Mrsmac Smile

LunaLoveg00d · 05/08/2016 13:17

Leaving Henry VIII in the 16th century where he belongs, in 2016 yes it would be an odd thing to do.

SortItAhhht · 05/08/2016 13:17

I know four sisters who are all called Mary. But they're 'Mary-something' -Mary-Jo etc.

thecraftyfox · 05/08/2016 13:18

I know a family where three boys are called Scott. As is Dad and Grandpa. Different middle names for the brothers but one has exacts same name as his father.

MrsJayy · 05/08/2016 13:19

Its Georgetta Foreman Grin his other dds have different names though

ArmfulOfRoses · 05/08/2016 13:19

I know a family with 3 sons, not real names obvs but for example..
Ds1 bill bob Ben
Ds2 bob bill Ben
Ds3 Ben bill bon

I find that quite odd.

belleandsnowwhite · 05/08/2016 13:19

It was not unusual for Anne Boleyn to "adopt" Henry Carey as Mary was a Widow.

BuntyFigglesworthSpiffington · 05/08/2016 13:20

I know someone like this. I suspect he didn't tell the mother of son No.2 about the existence of son No.1 until well after son No.2 was born.
