To be hacked off with lodger?

So we're on holiday right now. Ten days left.

We arranged with our lodger to feed our cats and let out and lock up our chickens every day.

He's just paid his rent into my account less the sum we agreed to pay him for this chores.

Aibu to be really cheesed off about this? He hasn't completed the work and rent and payment for this work are two separate issues.

Beans - it really wouldn't bother you that your lodger took money for a service he didn't provide and left dogs without food or walks for 2 days?

fastdaytears · 16/08/2016 18:06

I'm guessing that was a cross post...

AntiHop · 16/08/2016 19:26

What a betrayal of your trust. Hope your animals are ok.

OreosAreTasty · 16/08/2016 19:30

I hope everything is ok op Flowers

Does he pay you rent in advance or for the time he's already lived there? I am guessing rightly or wrongly it's for in advance in which case to deduct it makes complete sense to me.
If you're not happy with you arrangement then maybe next time you go away arrange for someone to come in and do these chores separately or sort payment out at the time with the lodger on how you expect to pay.

headinthecloud · 16/08/2016 19:45

X post before I read the update.

Seems odd to me though that he's paid rent and now upped and left.

Petty in exactly what way Rattusan? That I prefer work to be done before I pay for it?

You sound like someone who likes to kick someone when they're down. When is it ever acceptable to do a lodger flit?

He actually paid rent on the 14th of each month. This month he paid a week early.

Like I said, I'm not bothered about the rent when my animals are not looked after now.

He wanted the opportunity to earn some extra cash so I gave him that opportunity. As I have done in the past. And paid him post work.

Petty, in that if you were going to pay him anyway, then when does not make a difference. To make a big deal about him deducting payment from the rent sounds very petty.

Clearly there are a lot of other issues here and a whole backstory which we haven't heard.

TaterTots · 16/08/2016 23:53

It's your own fault.

Dontyouopenthattrapdoor · 17/08/2016 00:27

Maybe he read this thread...

winkywinkola · 17/08/2016 06:09

But he's gone off two days before the job was completed. So that's £50 of pay he's got for not doing work and animals not tended.

Plus I got hold of my other lodger on the phone finally and he has informed me that he also had people over for a party and let them stay over in my dcs beds!

But it's all my fault apparently. Sure. And there must be a backstory because I must be out of order for giving someone paid work but expecting them to complete the paid work.

How very very petty of me.

YANBU.
Rent is rent. Should be paid before all other expenses and should not be messed about with (ie changed dates/amounts) without prior arrangement.

Payment for work is a separate issue. As you have done this before there is a precedent, you pay on your return as previously. End of.

Sorry to hear they have done a runner and left your animals and taken payment for work they ate not doing. Hope all is well.
