AIBU?

To ask if you're NOT vaccinating against Meningitis B what are your reasons?

Non judgey.

Ours is simply cost - we have twins and can't afford it .

Kimmy I believe around £95 - £110 per shot, and each child needs two.

My 2.5 year old DS has had his first dose at Boots and we have an appointment in 2 months to have the second dose. My parents are paying (their decision) as I am on maternity leave with DD (7 months) and the cost for us was prohibitive. The thought of him being a victim of meningitis B absolutely petrifies me and I am so grateful to my parents for supporting us to get him vaccinated.

Jimmy - you may find this paper interesting. It's discussing a survey that was given to paediatricians in Germany about the introduction of the Men B vaccine.

That should have been Kimmy. Sorry!

"Because vaccines are all the biggest medical scam of the last century. The pharmaceutical industry is a MONEY MAKING BUSINESS and there ain't no money to be made from healthy people. Do I trust the government? I most certainly do not. I most certainly do not trust the vaccines or the biased research that supposedly backs them up or the pseudo 'science' behind how they are supposed to work."

Fuck's sake. You sound proud of being so ignorant.

@ DreamCloud99 No those things are not harmful in this case; to clarify One episodes point:

Sodium and Chlorine are two of the most reactive and dangerous elements in the periodic table. Put them together and you have table salt. Compounds aren't the same thing as the elements they contain; in other words Aluminium Hydroxide isn't Aluminium and isn't harmful in this amount (0.5 mg).

The vaccine contains some bits of the important chemical markers on disease (produced using a type of E.Coli) which train your immune system how to fight the real thing.

TheBreastmilksOnMe should be ashamed of the statement they don't vaccinate their children and for spreading lies.

Dd had her first jab last week, £110 at Boots. Next one in two months, another £110.

The decision was made on the basis that I could never forgive myself if she did get a very nasty disease that she could have been vaccinated against.

Cost.

'The decision was made on the basis that I could never forgive myself if she did get a very nasty disease that she could have been vaccinated against.'

What if you had more than one child and had no way of saving £400 for that?

not 100% accurate or relevant obviously but i love this video. Sent to me by a consultant paed.

Then the decision would have been made by the financial circumstances expat. I'm not sure it matters how many children or how much, people can either afford it or they can't. Or, in my case, they can't really, and have had to do some belt cinching and a car boot sale to pay for it.

I was able to pull the money together, but it involved choosing to tighten the budget to do so.

coolaschmoola · 03/08/2016 01:46

Personally I think every child should get it on the NHS. If that really is impossible then it should be made available to those who can't afford to pay for it. I've had to make adjustments, but I wouldn't have any issue with those who aren't able to pay getting it free. Health care should be available to all, not just those who can pay.

I wonder what the reaction would be that to picture if that wheelchair said 'this is vaccine damage, don't vaccinate'?

I'm not anti-vaccine per se, but the people who like to shout down anyone who voices any kind of concern about vaccination annoy me a lot. nothing is every gained by refusing to engage in discussion and just saying 'i'm right, you're wrong'. perhaps if the government, doctors and people in general were more willing to discuss negatives of vaccination, we'd not have had the whole debacle surrounding mmr.

and to answer the OP. my children haven't had men b for the same reason they've not had any vaccinations since the one that almost killed my child. because a vaccine almost killed my child.

In fact, the only two people I have known who got polio after the 1950s outbreak, did get it from vaccines. And that is not a scientific discovery, just empirical fact.

Unfortunately vaccination is not a topic that people have open minds on, so it is impossible to have a proper discussion without name-calling on here.

I presume your child has an allergy to a compound in the vaccine, Great? This happened to the child of a good friend of mine. Her DH is a GP, so he managed to push for a referral to a consultant and testing until the compound was identified. Their child has had some of their other vaccinations, which didn't contain it, and their other DC were tested and found to not be allergic so have all been fully vaccinated.

Life threatening reactions from vaccines are really rare. So it annoys me when people use that flippantly as a reason for not vaccinating. (I don't mean those few people whose child has had a severe reaction, clearly. But those who just have read it online and trot it out like it then means something.)

There is barely a substance on our planet that someone isn't allergic to. EG, nuts almost killed my boyfriend when he was a child. He doesn't eat nuts now of course, but that doesn't negate that they're nutritious for almost everyone else.

After reading this thread , I think we could save up and get the boys vaccinated next summer when money won't be as tight .

DH isn't really on board as he thinks it's a bit of an "unnecessary" vaccine if it's only available privately .

I'm also slightly worried after a pp mentioned severe reactions to the vaccine.

I can't find any information online about any adverse reactions to bexsero . Does anyone know anything about this?

Why the lambasting of the anti-vaxxers? There is every reason to be cautious about vaccines as they are NOT risk free.

I do get my kids vaccinated but trust me - if you have seen vaccine damage you wouldn't be so scathing.

Anyway, I'm dithering with my third child (I had my first two vaccinated) and it's really down to the long term efficacy. There seems to be conflicting reports as to how long the Men B provides protection for.

Charlieismydarlin · 03/08/2016 06:53

dream FWIW my DH is in the same boat as yours. My DH is anti-vac any he doesn't think are strictly necessary - eg flu. There is zero science behind his views so I ignore him!

The private GP who did my first two kids said she hadn't received any reports of serious adverse reactions and that was my experience - mine had two nights of mild fevers. There is some stuff online but there always is....

BifsWif · 03/08/2016 06:57

I paid for my son to have it, my DD got it on the NHS.

I really wish it were available to all, I'd have no problem with other children having it for free.

BuggerLumpsAnnoyed · 03/08/2016 06:59

My youngest had it, my oldest is 5 and I'm considering it.

A little round here died a few months back. She wasn't yet 2, was a few months older than those who routinely get the vaccine and was perfectly healthy one minute. Within 6 hours of contracting the disease, she was gone.

So I don't actually think vaccines, especially for this awful disease are a "waste of time" and I'm sure the parents of this little girl (who have launched a campaign to make it available to all) don't think it is either. What an incredibly stupid, ignorant thing to say. By "conducting your own research" you mean 'reading bollocks by nobodys" on the internet.
